What Is Amplitude? Event Analytics With a 2M-Event Free Plan
By Joris van Huët · Amplitude's own site
The short answer: under 2 million events a month, Amplitude costs nothing and asks for no card: the Free plan includes the whole platform, unlimited seats and the MCP server, with one year of data access; past that, the Plus estimator showed $576 a month for 10 million events paid annually (pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026). Amplitude calls itself the platform for building self-improving products: event-based analytics, session replay, experiments, guides and surveys and AI agents, for product-led companies where marketing owns activation as well as traffic.

Size it in events, not visitors:
- Multiply users by actions. For example, 30,000 monthly users firing 60 events each is 30,000 x 60 = 1,800,000, inside Free's 2 million; at 80 events each, 2,400,000 moves you to Plus, which bills per event above the first 2 million (pricing page).
- Start from what the SDK sends by default. The Browser SDK switches on attribution, page views, sessions, form interactions and file downloads unless you turn them off (Browser SDK docs).
- Fix the window that changes every answer. A funnel counts a conversion only within its window, one day by default and up to 366 days (funnel guide).
Events in, decisions out
Everything in Amplitude is an event, a page view, a signup or a purchase, tied to a device or a user ID. Funnels, retention, segmentation, cohorts and journeys are built from those events.
Around the analytics sit Session Replay, experiments, guides and surveys, heatmaps and cohort syncs, plus in-product AI agents and an MCP server through which Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT or Codex query charts and edit dashboards with your permissions, on every plan.
Product teams first, marketers second
It suits a SaaS company or an app where the events that matter happen after signup: activation, a first project, an upgrade. A growth lead there sees which channel's signups go on to do what predicts revenue.
It suits less well a content site whose questions end at the visit, which GA4 answers with less setup. Amplitude pays off only once someone defines and maintains the events.
Free, Plus, then a quote
Checked on 26 October 2026 on the pricing page, in USD.
| Plan | Price | Volume | Data access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, no card | Up to 2 million events a month | 1 year |
| Plus | First 2 million events free, then per event; card required | Up to 70 million events or 700,000 tracked users | 2 years |
| Growth | Custom | Custom | Unlimited |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Unlimited |
The bill estimator showed Plus at $576 a month for 10 million events and $4,692 for 70 million with annual payment, and $5,865 at 70 million paid monthly. Startups with fewer than 20 employees and under $10 million in funding can apply for one free year of Growth.
The same page charts annual Plus bills by volume against Mixpanel and PostHog, putting Amplitude at $6,912 for 10 million events against Mixpanel's $10,080, which matches Mixpanel's own pricing page. A vendor still picks which volumes and which rivals go on its chart, so price your own volume on each vendor's page.
Beside GA4 and Mixpanel
Google Analytics. Free and joined to Google's ad products. Traffic and ad questions on the marketing site point to GA4; behaviour inside the product points to Amplitude; many teams run both.
Mixpanel. The closest rival: free up to 1 million events a month, then Growth at $840 a month for 10 million events billed annually. Choose on the free tier you need and whose experiments you would use.
The first week
Do it on the Free plan, which is enough to test the whole idea before any card is involved: install the Browser SDK, set a user ID at signup, define the activation event and build one funnel. How to use Amplitude walks that job from the snippet to a weekly check against billing.
FAQ
Is there a free trial?
No trial, a free plan: 2 million events a month with no card and no time limit, according to the pricing FAQ.
What is the difference between an event and a tracked user?
An event is one action; a monthly tracked user is a unique user who fires at least one event in a calendar month. Plus caps at 700,000 tracked users or 70 million events (pricing page).
Can I use Amplitude from Claude or ChatGPT on the free plan?
Yes, the MCP connection works on every plan. ChatGPT gets a subset of about 25 tools, without session replay, per the MCP documentation.
