What Is Lemon Squeezy? Merchant of Record Fees and Status

By Joris van Huët · Lemon Squeezy's own site

The short answer: if you sell software or digital products to buyers in many countries and do not want to collect and file their sales tax yourself, Lemon Squeezy becomes the legal seller for 5% + 50¢ a transaction with no monthly fee, but a buyer outside the United States adds 1.5% and every subscription payment another 0.5%, per its fees page (checked on 26 October 2026). Stripe has owned it since 2024, and the CEO's 2026 update calls Stripe Managed Payments the future.

What to check before you sign up:

  1. Run the vendor's own example. A buyer in France pays $20 plus $4 VAT. The fee is charged on the $24 total: $0.50 + 5% + 1.5% international = $2.06, leaving you $17.94, per the fees page. As a subscription renewal, add 0.5% x $24 = $0.12.
  2. Price what you pay today for the same job. Your current card fees plus whatever VAT registration and filing cost you now. Lemon Squeezy replaces both, so compare it with the sum.
  3. Confirm it will take your product. Every store is reviewed before it can sell. The activation article says approval usually takes 2 to 3 business days and that physical goods and services are typically not approved.

What it handles

A merchant of record is the business the customer buys from. Lemon Squeezy's merchant of record article says it takes on sales tax, refunds, chargebacks and PCI compliance. Its homepage adds payments from 135+ countries, subscriptions, license keys, signed downloads and failed-payment recovery. The pricing page makes email marketing free up to 500 subscribers.

For a seller in the EU this decides the category. Selling digital services to consumers in other member states brings VAT in the buyer's country once you pass the EU-wide EUR 10,000 threshold described on the Commission's One Stop Shop portal. With a merchant of record, that obligation sits with the platform.

Who it suits

A SaaS team, course seller or template shop selling to consumers abroad without a finance person for VAT. It suits less well physical goods or services, which the store review usually turns away, or a brand that wants its own name on card statements: buyers see LEMSQZY*, per the descriptor article.

In January 2026 the CEO wrote, in the 2026 update, that the team had been building Stripe Managed Payments, that support had slowed and updates had become less frequent, and that the goal is an easy way for Lemon Squeezy users to migrate there. The owner is building its next merchant of record beside this one, so keep exports of customers, subscriptions and license keys current from the first month.

Against Paddle and Stripe

  • Paddle is also a merchant of record with the same headline 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction, and Paddle's pricing page promises no added costs, where Lemon Squeezy adds 1.5% for buyers abroad and for PayPal. With mostly international buyers, that line decides it.
  • Stripe on its own is a processor: you stay the seller and the tax is yours. Its pricing page adds Managed Payments, Stripe's merchant of record, at 3.5% per successful transaction on top of payment fees. If you are starting today, compare it directly.
