What Is Descript? Editing Video by Editing the Transcript

By Joris van Huët · Descript's own site

The short answer: if your team records people talking, a podcast, webinars, customer interviews, and nobody on it edits video for a living, Descript fits: you cut the recording by deleting words from its transcript. Price Creator first, $35 per person a month on monthly billing with 30 media hours and 800 AI credits, because it is the lowest tier that can buy top-ups and add teammates (pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

What sets the bill:

  1. Two meters, not one. Media hours count what you upload or record; AI credits pay for Underlord, Studio Sound, filler-word removal and the other AI tools, per Descript's usage article. Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words stop at 30 credits per file each time you run them, so cleaning four episode files with both costs at most 4 x 2 x 30 = 240 credits.
  2. The recordings you already have. Zoom cloud recordings from the past 12 months import directly (Zoom import), and a Rooms session uses media minutes for its length, not per guest: an hour with five people is 60 minutes, per the usage article.
  3. The number to read after a month. The Usage tab exports a CSV on paid plans. Check which meter you ran down before you change tier.

What Descript does

The homepage sums it up as editing video "as easy as typing": speech becomes a script, and deleting a sentence deletes the footage under it. Around that sit Studio Sound, filler-word and retake removal, captions, translation, AI speech and avatars. Underlord is the agent you chat with inside a project, and its help article warns that it can overpromise. Rooms records remote guests in the browser, and an MCP connector lets Claude or ChatGPT edit on one drive.

Who it fits, and who it does not

It fits teams whose raw material is speech: a company podcast, webinars, sales demos, a founder talking to camera. Footage with little dialogue gains less, since silences only appear in the script through wordless media, still a beta. Top-ups are sold only on Creator and Business (top-ups article), so a Hobbyist drive that runs dry waits for renewal.

Top-ups run from 350 AI credits for $35 to 4,000 for $200, and from 5 media hours for $25 to 50 for $150; they last 12 months and are non-refundable (top-ups article).

How it compares

Riverside. Riverside edits by text too, but starts from the recording: 4K capture, podcast hosting, live streaming and webinars, with Pro at $24 a month on yearly billing on its pricing page. Pick it when capture and distribution are the job, Descript when the edit is. Descript publishes its own guide to switching from Riverside; a switching guide is written by the side that wants you, so run one real episode through both first.

OpusClip. OpusClip only cuts long recordings into shorts and bills by the source minute. If the long version needs no edit, it is the narrower buy.

Submagic. Submagic polishes vertical clips, captions, zooms and b-roll, on videos of up to 2 minutes on Starter at $12 per member a month billed yearly. A social team's tool, not an episode editor.

Getting started

Edit one real episode on the Free plan first. How to use Descript takes a podcast episode from a Room to an exported MP3.

FAQ

Do unused media hours and AI credits roll over?

No. Both reset when the subscription renews, per the usage article. Only top-ups carry over, for 12 months.

Does the MCP connection cost extra?

No separate charge. The MCP page says it spends the same AI credits as the app, and that automated editing gets through them faster.

Can I get a refund?

Plans within 48 hours of the invoice date and extra Editor seats within 7 days; top-ups not at all, per the refund policy.
