What Is ClickUp? Tasks, Docs, Chat and AI Agents in One App
By Joris van Huët · ClickUp's own site
The short answer: you are not misreading it: on 26 October 2026 ClickUp's pricing page showed Core at $9 and Business at $17 per user a month billed yearly, with AI included, on one visit, and Unlimited at $7 and Business at $12, with AI as an add-on, on the next. The pricing article explains why: new workspaces start on the new plans, older ones keep theirs until ClickUp moves them. ClickUp itself is a work management app that puts tasks, docs, chat and AI agents in one workspace, for teams tired of running one project across several tools.

Before you choose a plan:
- The bill covers everyone. The pricing page's FAQ says an upgrade applies to the entire workspace. For example, a marketing team of 8 on Core pays 8 x $9 = $72 a month billed yearly, or 8 x $12 = $96 at the monthly rate on the same pricing page.
- One live project, on the free plan. It allows unlimited members and tasks, so move one current project in before paying. Watch one cap: 60 Custom Field values in total, per the Custom Fields article, and the pricing article says such limits do not reset.
- The tools it should retire. List the apps the team pays for today. A month in, ask which of them nobody opened. If the answer is none, ClickUp became one more tool.
What ClickUp does
Work sits in a fixed hierarchy, Workspace, Spaces, Folders, Lists, Tasks, with more than 15 view types on top, per ClickUp's site summary; the homepage names over 100 products, Gantt charts, forms and an AI notetaker among them.
The AI layer, Brain², reads your tasks, docs and conversations, picks a model per job among GPT, Claude and Gemini, and reaches Google Drive, GitHub and Salesforce. Super Agents are AI teammates you describe in plain language; the Super Agents article says each action is logged and that they ask a human before critical decisions.
Who it suits, and who it does not
It suits a team that wants requests, projects, documents and chat under one login, with one person to own the setup. It suits less well a team whose processes branch a lot: conditions on automations start on Business, per the automations limits article, and conditional logic in forms needs Business Plus or Enterprise, per the Forms article.
Two price lists
Per user a month in USD, checked on 26 October 2026 on the pricing page.
| New plans | Billed yearly | Price shown beside it | AI credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | $0 | Brain² trial, 500 per workspace |
| Core | $9 | $12 billed monthly | 1,000 per user a month, pooled |
| Business | $17 | $25 regular price | 1,500 per user a month, pooled |
| Enterprise | Quote | Quote | 3,000 per user a month, pooled |
| Max | $100 | $120 regular price | 10,000 per user a month, pooled |
The older set lists Unlimited at $7 billed yearly or $10 monthly and Business at $12 or $19, with AI as add-ons; extra credits cost $10 per 10,000 on both. The pricing article also sets the order of events when ClickUp moves an existing workspace: the extra features arrive at once and the new price follows at renewal, January 2027 at the earliest, so a team settles into the bundle months before it sees the bill for it.
How it compares
- monday.com sells the same promise on boards: Standard, $12 per seat a month billed yearly, counts 250 automation actions a month against Core's 1,000 automations, per monday's pricing. Pick it when a CRM should later share the platform.
- Asana starts at $10.99 per user a month billed annually, with unlimited automations, forms and AI teammates, per Asana's pricing. It suits project management without docs and chat folded in.
- Notion starts from the page, not the task: Plus is $10 per member a month billed yearly, its agent comes with Business at $20, per Notion's pricing. Pick it when the wiki is the centre.
Getting started
How to use ClickUp builds one marketing request form, from the fields to an agent that proposes priorities, starting free.
When the tool is not the problem
If ClickUp, monday.com and Asana are all on the shortlist because work keeps falling between tools and people, the stack may be the problem rather than any single app, and a one-week review like the Startup Fixer covers that before a contract is signed.
FAQ
Is there a free plan?
Yes, with no card and no end date: unlimited members and tasks, 60 MB of storage, one form and a Brain² trial, per the pricing page.
What happens if I cancel?
The plan runs to the end of the billing cycle unless you choose to downgrade at once, per the FAQ on the pricing page.
Can Claude or ChatGPT work inside ClickUp?
Yes. ClickUp runs an MCP server at mcp.clickup.com, and its setup page covers Claude, Cursor and other assistants.
