What Is Copper? The CRM That Lives in Gmail

By Joris van Huët · Copper's own site

The short answer: if your team already spends its day in Gmail and Google Calendar, Copper puts the CRM in that sidebar: Basic costs $23 per seat a month billed annually ($29 monthly) with a 2,500-contact limit, and workflow automation and bulk email start on Professional at $59 ($69 monthly), per the pricing page checked on 24 October 2026. It is built for relationship-focused service businesses on Google Workspace, not for teams that live in Outlook.

Before you buy:

  1. Price the billing choice. For example, five seats on Professional cost 5 x $59 = $295 a month billed annually or 5 x $69 = $345 monthly, so month-to-month freedom costs (345 - 295) x 12 = $600 a year, using the pricing page.
  2. Let your inbox do the import. Signing up with a Gmail account syncs the last 90 days of email, or up to 1,000 emails, and lists the people you write to as suggested contacts, per the Gmail integration guide.
  3. Check the two limits that bite. Contacts stop at 2,500 on Basic and 15,000 on Professional, and custom fields at 25 and 50, on the plan comparison.

What Copper does

Copper keeps leads, people, companies, opportunities and projects, and shows them in a Chrome extension inside Gmail and Google Calendar. Hover over an email address in Gmail and the extension opens the record or offers to add a new person or lead, filling in details it finds on the web. Pipelines run as boards, with flags for slipping and high-value deals, and a won deal can become a project.

Automation comes in layers: task automation creates follow-up tasks from triggers, workflow automation creates or updates records but cannot send email, and email automation and email series handle sending. For AI, the Copper GPT answers questions about your pipeline in ChatGPT with read-only access, and Copper documents prompts for Gemini in Chrome on an open record.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits agencies, consultancies and other service firms whose revenue rests on long client relationships and whose day runs in Google Workspace. It suits less well a Microsoft 365 team: the Gmail guide names Gmail as the email client to use, with Outlook users relating mail by BCC to a Copper address.

The pricing page gives prices in USD before taxes and offers a 14-day trial without a card. Email series and custom reports sit on Business. The page also tells you that 63% started off with Professional; a line about what most buyers chose steers you to the middle tier, and the right tier is the one whose limits you hit.

How it compares

Against HubSpot, the decision is where the CRM lives. HubSpot's free tools cover up to 2 users on its Sales Hub pricing and grow into a platform of hubs, while Copper's whole design is the Gmail and Calendar sidebar.

Against Pipedrive, it is the inbox. Pipedrive's pricing page starts at $14 per seat a month billed annually and syncs Gmail, Outlook or other mail on Growth, which suits a mixed email setup; Copper assumes Google.

Getting started

How to use Copper sets up a pipeline you run from Gmail: leads added from the sidebar, stages kept short, slipping deals flagged and follow-up tasks automated.

FAQ

Does Copper work with Outlook?

Partly. The Gmail integration guide says another client can still relate emails by putting your Copper mailbox address in BCC, but suggested contacts and leads from the inbox need Gmail.

Can Copper send automated emails?

Yes, through email automation, not workflow automation, which the workflow guide limits to creating and updating records.

Can the Copper GPT change my data?

No. The Copper GPT article says it can only read, respects your user permissions and sees email metadata but not email bodies.
