What Is Benchmark Email? Newsletters on a Rebuilt Platform

By Joris van Huët · Benchmark Email's own site

The short answer: If you need to send a branded newsletter to fewer than 500 people and want a person to answer at any hour while you do it, Benchmark Email's free plan covers it: 500 contacts, 2,500 sends a month and 24/7 chat and email support, per its pricing page and homepage. The current product is a rebuilt platform the help centre calls Benchmark Next-Generation, with every feature on every plan. What it does not yet offer is automation.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Check before you move a list in:

  1. What a small team pays. Every plan includes one user, and each extra user on a paid plan costs $15 a month (pricing FAQ). For example, three people on Pro for 1,000 contacts on monthly billing pay $19 + 2 x $15 = $49 a month.
  2. Whether you are on Classic. Benchmark Classic and the new Benchmark do not share account information; a Classic user sets up a new account, and since July 2026 can import Classic contacts and email designs with a Classic API key (migration guide, July 2026 update).
  3. Which report you will use. Link reports list every clicked link (release notes): campaign reporting, not journeys.

What Benchmark Email does now

It is a campaign tool: a drag and drop builder with templates, synced blocks, a brand kit and custom HTML; one contact database organised by tags and criteria-based lists; embedded forms, pop-ups and hosted form pages; Zapier inside the app and an API (pricing page). The AI Assistant writes copy, edits images and restyles sections, on 150 credits a month on Free and 1,000 on paid plans (AI Assistant).

The gaps are as concrete. The pricing page's "Every Feature in Every Plan" list has no automation section, the new help centre has no automation collection, and the February 2026 release notes described forms as single opt-in only, with double opt-in planned and "no autoresponder support yet" (February 2026 notes).

Who it suits

A shop, practice or local business that sends newsletters by hand and wants support on call. Not anyone who needs an email that sends itself.

What it costs

Pro plan, checked on 24 October 2026 on the Benchmark Email pricing page.

ContactsMonthly billingAnnual billing, per month
1,000$19$16
2,500$37$31
5,000$63$54
10,000$93$79
100,000$499$425

In euros the same page shows €19 and €16 for 1,000 contacts. Paid plans send up to 10 times the contact limit and remove the branding; above 100,000 contacts, Enterprise is priced by sales (plan comparison). Passing the limit brings a notification, not an automatic upgrade.

"No feature gating" is the pricing page's promise, and it is accurate. It cuts both ways: what the free plan lacks, the paid plan lacks too, so paying does not buy automation.

How it compares

Mailchimp has automation flows on its paid plans and a free plan of 250 contacts and 500 sends a month (Mailchimp help), against Benchmark's 500 contacts and 2,500 sends. If you need an email that sends itself, Mailchimp; if you send campaigns by hand and want the larger free allowance, Benchmark.

Getting started

Verify a sending subdomain, import contacts you have permission for, add consent text to a form, and send a monthly issue. How to use Benchmark Email covers that job from the new help centre.

FAQ

Does Benchmark Email have automation?

Not in the current platform's documented features. The pricing page lists none, and the February 2026 release notes said forms had no autoresponder support yet. The automation articles that exist belong to the Benchmark Classic help centre, which serves the older product.

Is the free plan time-limited?

No. The homepage presents it as a permanent plan, with 500 contacts, 2,500 sends a month, one user and Benchmark branding on emails and forms (pricing FAQ).

Can I bring my Benchmark Classic emails across?

Yes, since July 2026, as editable blocks through your Classic API key; merge fields arrive as plain text, so test first, per the July 2026 update.
