The short answer: if one person sends newsletters and one-off campaigns and you need no sequence that runs by itself, Benchmark Email costs less than Mailchimp Essentials at every list size from 1,000 to 50,000 contacts: $63 against $75 a month at 5,000, on monthly billing (Benchmark pricing, Mailchimp pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If you need even a welcome series that sends itself, choose Mailchimp: Essentials includes flows of up to 4 steps, and Benchmark's current plan list has no automation section.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Benchmark has rebuilt its product as what its help centre calls Benchmark Next-Generation, with one free plan and one paid plan below 100,000 contacts, and every feature on both (migration guide). That makes it simple to buy and easy to outgrow. Mailchimp sells three paid tiers that gate features as you climb, which makes it harder to price and more complete at each step.

Price it for your setup:

  1. Add the people. Benchmark's Pro plan includes 1 user and charges $15 a month for each extra one; Mailchimp Essentials includes 3 seats (Benchmark pricing, Mailchimp pricing). For three people at 5,000 contacts: Benchmark $63 + 2 x $15 = $93 a month, Mailchimp Essentials $75. The cheaper list price becomes the dearer bill.
  2. Bring what you already built. Benchmark's August 2026 update added a Custom HTML option that imports finished emails from another platform and names Mailchimp as one (August 2026 notes). Export your templates as HTML before you decide; it costs nothing.
  3. List every automation you run. A welcome email, a birthday email, a re-send to non-openers. If the list is empty, Benchmark loses nothing. If it is not, it does.
  4. Know your bounce rate before the first send. Benchmark's Pro plan validates one list up to the plan size (pricing). Run it, note the share of bad addresses, and compare the bounce rate on your first campaign with it.

Benchmark figures from its pricing page; Mailchimp figures from its pricing page and plans article.

The difference in three parts

The automation gap

The "Every Feature in Every Plan" list on Benchmark's pricing page covers the email editor, forms, contacts, personalisation, reporting and integrations, and has no automation section; its August and September 2026 release notes add none. Mailchimp's smallest paid plan already sends single-email automations and flows of up to 4 steps (plans article). For a business whose email is a monthly newsletter, this costs nothing. For one that needs a new subscriber greeted within the hour, it decides the comparison.

One plan against three

Benchmark has one paid plan, so the only question is list size. Mailchimp's features change by tier: custom reports, dynamic content and branded templates start on Standard, and generative AI is a no-cost add-on on Standard and Premium only (Mailchimp pricing). A Mailchimp quote is a choice between price and features; a Benchmark quote is just a price.

Where the price gap opens

At 1,000 contacts the gap is $7.50 a month; at 25,000 it is $91, with Benchmark Pro at $179 and Mailchimp Essentials at $270 on monthly billing (Benchmark pricing, Mailchimp pricing). A large list that only receives newsletters is where Benchmark earns its place.

Prices on both pages

Checked on 26 October 2026: monthly billing in USD from the Benchmark pricing page, which also shows an annual rate, and from the Mailchimp pricing page. Mailchimp sells contacts in bands, so a list of 1,000 pays the 501 to 1,500 price.

1,000$19$16$26.50$45

50,000$299$255$385$450
100,000$499$425Not offered$800

In euros, Benchmark Pro is €59 a month for 5,000 contacts and Mailchimp Essentials €67.40 for 2,501 to 5,000, on the same two pages (Benchmark, Mailchimp).

Use the free plans to decide

Free on Benchmark means 500 contacts with up to 2,500 emails a month; free on Mailchimp means 250 contacts and 500 sends (Benchmark pricing, Mailchimp plans article). Import a slice of your list into Benchmark Free, paste in one exported HTML template, and send your next newsletter from it. If nobody asks where the welcome email went, you have learned what you needed.

The free plan puts Benchmark's branding on your emails and forms, per its pricing table. A free plan is also the vendor's advertising, paid for with your readers' attention; budget for Pro if the footer matters to your brand.

One AI step, with the audit after it

Benchmark's AI Assistant is a chat window inside the email and form builders: you click the AI icon on a block, describe the change, and it rewrites copy, generates or edits images, or restyles a section, using AI credits that renew monthly (AI Assistant article). The article notes that text results are applied to the block immediately. So the check comes after: run the email audit, which flags missing links and missing alt text, and send a test, which goes to as many as five addresses, for a colleague to read before anything goes to the list (migration guide).

For moving data, Benchmark's Zapier integration, first released in June 2026, can create or update contacts and add them to lists, triggered from another app (Zapier article).

Choose Benchmark Email if

  • Your email is newsletters and campaigns, with no sequence that runs on its own.
  • One person sends, so the extra-user charge never applies.
  • The list is large and the price per contact is the line your finance team reads.

Choose Mailchimp if

  • Any email has to go out automatically, starting with a welcome.
  • Three or more people work in the account.
  • You want store data or Standard's custom reports later without switching tools.

FAQ

Does Benchmark Email have automations?

Not on its current platform's feature list. The pricing page lists editor, form, contact, reporting and integration features on every plan, and no automation section.

How does Benchmark bill extra users?

Pro includes one user, and each additional user is $15 a month, per the plan comparison on its pricing page. The free plan allows one user.

Can I move my Mailchimp templates to Benchmark?

Yes, as HTML. The August 2026 update added a Custom HTML option for uploading or pasting a finished email, with a live preview and a compliant footer added for you.
