What Is Marketo? Adobe's B2B Marketing Automation, Not a CRM
By Joris van Huët · Adobe Marketo Engage's own site
The short answer: if you are shortlisting Marketo to feed a Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics sales team, you are buying marketing automation that syncs with a CRM, not a CRM: the Salesforce, Dynamics and Veeva integration is ticked on all four packages, Growth is capped at 10 users and 20,000 API calls a day, and no package carries a price (pricing page, checked on 5 November 2026). It suits a B2B team with a CRM, an administrator and a sales floor that acts on a score.

Before the consultation form:
- A figure to hold the quote against. For example, Salesforce publishes Account Engagement Growth+ at $1,250 per org a month on an annual contract, so 1,250 x 12 = $15,000 a year (Account Engagement pricing). Ask Adobe to quote the same database.
- What the sync will carry. Leads, contacts and Salesforce campaigns sync both ways, accounts and opportunities one way, and the first sync "may take hours or even days" (Salesforce sync guide).
- The hand-off number. Adobe's scoring guide has marketing and sales agree the hand-off score before any campaign exists, starting at 100 (person scoring guide).
The vocabulary, in Adobe's words
Programs "represent a single marketing initiative" and hold their own assets and smart campaigns; the types are Event, Engagement for nurturing "at a set periodic schedule", Email for "the classic mail blast" and Default (programs guide). A smart campaign is the engine: a smart list says who, from filters that collect everyone qualifying now or triggers that fire the moment someone acts; a flow says what happens; a schedule says when (smart campaigns guide). Tokens are variables such as {{my.Event Date}} (tokens guide), and lead scoring runs through the Change Score flow step (Change Score guide).
What it is not
Marketo is not a CRM: the pipeline and the owner stay in the CRM it syncs with, which Adobe sells as the point, "Connect to CRMs bi-directionally with a native integration" (product page). With any other CRM the REST API is the route (developer guide).
Packages, and the price you will not find
| Growth | Select | Prime | Ultimate | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Users | 10 | 25 | 25 | 25 |
| API calls a day | 20,000 | 50,000 | 50,000 | 50,000 |
| Attribution dashboards, calendar, Dynamic Chat, events and webinars | Paid add-on | Included | Included | Included |
| Target accounts, predictive audiences, sandbox, workspaces and partitions | Paid add-on | Paid add-on | Included | Included |
| Marketo Measure | Paid add-on | Paid add-on | Paid add-on | Included |
All four include the database, segmentation, journey automation, scoring, email, landing pages and forms, and the CRM integration; add-ons carry a dollar sign under the page's "Available" legend (pricing page, checked on 5 November 2026).
The grid puts the attribution dashboards, the calendar and Dynamic Chat behind a dollar sign on Growth and a tick on Select, so any demo that shows those three is a demo of Select, and Adobe attaches a price only after the consultation form has recorded your database size and team.
What a Marketo administrator does
Adobe's new-instance checklist: roles assigned through Adobe Admin Console, a role per API user, a restriction on smart campaign size "to prevent accidentally emailing your whole database", communication limits, a field naming convention and a named CRM admin (admin checklist); CRM, roles, users, fields, webhooks and the API are separate grants (role permissions). It is a job.
How it compares
HubSpot. Marketing Hub Professional starts at $800 a month billed annually with 3 core seats and 2,000 marketing contacts (HubSpot pricing). Choose it for a price on the page.
ActiveCampaign. Starter is $15 a month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts, automation included (ActiveCampaign pricing). Choose it for a smaller list and no admin seat.
Salesforce Account Engagement (Pardot). Account Engagement runs from $1,250 to $15,000 per org a month on annual contracts; choose it if the business is Salesforce end to end.
Oracle Eloqua. Eloqua publishes no price; choose it where the stack is Oracle.

FAQ
Is Marketo a CRM?
No. It syncs with Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics and Veeva on every package (pricing page); the opportunities stay in the CRM.
What does Marketo cost?
Adobe publishes four packages and no prices; the figure follows a consultation request (pricing page, checked on 5 November 2026).
Does Marketo have an MCP server?
Yes, at marketo-mcp.adobe.io, under an API user's credentials; Adobe advises a dedicated user with the fewest permissions, in a sandbox first (MCP server guide).
