What Is ActiveCampaign? Automation, Scoring and an AI Layer
By Joris van Huët · ActiveCampaign's own site
The short answer: If your leads need scoring and handing to sales rather than just a newsletter, ActiveCampaign is built for that job: multi-step automation, site tracking and contact scoring are on every plan, from Starter at $15 a month billed yearly for 1,000 contacts, per its pricing page. On top sits Active Intelligence, an AI layer that drafts campaigns, automations and reports, and an MCP server that lets Claude or ChatGPT work in the account.

Before you book the demo:
- Price the step up, not the entry plan. At 5,000 contacts the yearly prices are $79 for Starter, $145 for Plus and $205 for Pro a month (pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026). Plus adds cross-channel marketing, generative AI and landing pages for $145 - $79 = $66 a month; Pro adds predictive sending, conditional content and attribution for $60 more.
- Count seats. Starter and Plus include 1 user, Pro 3 and Enterprise 5 (pricing page). A team of three on Plus is a conversation with sales, not a checkout.
- Agree what a sales-ready lead is. Scores recalculate every 12 hours after the first run (scoring timing), so set the threshold and a review date with the sales lead before the first score goes live.
What ActiveCampaign does
Campaigns start from 250+ templates, and multi-step automation is on every plan. Contact scores add or subtract points on any condition the segment builder can express, can expire, and can start automations when they change (contact scoring). Site tracking ties page visits to contacts, and an Enhanced CRM add-on brings pipelines to Plus and above. Every plan includes 500 AI credits, and core AI work such as building campaigns and automations keeps running when they run out (pricing FAQ). The MCP server lets an AI tool manage contacts, tags and automations and pull campaign performance (MCP article).
Who it suits
A B2B scale-up with a sales team, where marketing's job ends at a qualified lead. Less so a newsletter sender on a tight budget, or a small team that needs several logins on the lower plans.
What it costs
Yearly billing in USD, per month, checked on 24 October 2026 on the ActiveCampaign pricing page. The page shows no monthly-billing rate.
| Contacts | Starter | Plus | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $15 | $49 | $79 | $145 |
| 2,500 | $39 | $95 | $149 | $255 |
| 5,000 | $79 | $145 | $205 | $375 |
| 10,000 | $149 | $189 | $375 | $589 |
Sends are 10 times the contact limit on Starter and Plus, 12 times on Pro and 15 times on Enterprise, and Starter stops at 25,000 contacts (plan comparison). Every price on the page is billed yearly, the term the vendor would rather sell; if you need month-to-month terms, get them in writing first.
How it compares
Encharge starts flows from Stripe, Chargebee or Paddle billing events and product usage, with Growth at $79 a month billed yearly for 2,000 subscribers (Encharge pricing). Emails that react to product use lean that way; leads scored for salespeople lean here.
Mailchimp fits shops better, with free store connections and Standard from $20 a month for up to 500 contacts (Mailchimp pricing). ActiveCampaign fits where the next step after an email is a sales call.
Getting started
Set up consent-aware site tracking, build one contact score with sales, and alert a salesperson when a contact crosses the line. How to use ActiveCampaign follows the help centre through it. If the trouble is the stack rather than the tool, with marketing and sales each keeping their own version of a lead, a one-week review like the Startup Fixer covers that.
FAQ
Is there a free plan?
No. ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial with email sign-up, then the paid plans, per its pricing page.
Can Claude or ChatGPT work inside ActiveCampaign?
Yes, through the MCP server: copy the Remote MCP URL from Settings, then Developer, and add it in the AI tool. ActiveCampaign branding must be on for the option to appear (MCP article).
Which plans include contact scoring?
All four: Starter, Plus, Pro and Enterprise, according to the contact scoring article.
