The short answer: at 2,500 contacts and one newsletter a week you are buying sends, not automation depth yet, and Brevo sells sends for less: its Starter plan covers 15,000 emails and 2,500 contacts for $25 a month on monthly billing, while ActiveCampaign Starter for 2,500 contacts is $39 a month billed yearly (Brevo pricing, ActiveCampaign pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). Choose ActiveCampaign if your job is long, branching lead nurture with a sales team waiting at the end. Choose Brevo if your job is newsletters plus order and password emails from one account and one bill.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Both send campaigns, run automations and keep a CRM close by. What Brevo changes, set against ActiveCampaign, is what you are charged for: it prices monthly email volume, campaigns and transactional mail counted together, and attaches a contact allowance to each volume step. ActiveCampaign prices the number of contacts and gives each plan a send allowance of 10 to 15 times that number (pricing).

Three checks first:

  1. Price one year at your real size. For example, at 2,500 contacts ActiveCampaign Plus, the first plan with generative AI and landing pages, is $95 a month billed yearly, or $1,140 a year. Brevo Standard at 15,000 emails and 2,500 contacts is $44.08 a month on yearly billing, or $528.96 a year (ActiveCampaign pricing, Brevo pricing).
  2. Start from the CRM you already run. ActiveCampaign lists premium CRM integrations such as Salesforce on its Enterprise plan. If you have no CRM yet, Brevo's pricing page adds a Sales Free package at $0 with one seat, or Sales Essentials at $31 a month.
  3. Read Brevo's contact allowance closely. You are not misreading the configurator: the allowance is 500 contacts at 5,000 emails, 1,500 at 10,000 and 2,500 at 15,000, then 500,000 from 20,000 emails a month (pricing). A list of 4,000 therefore needs the 20,000-email step, $32 on Starter or $69 on Standard.
  4. Write down the three branches your nurture flow needs before either trial starts, for example downloaded the guide, visited pricing, booked a demo. Then check that the plan you would buy can trigger on each one. A missing trigger costs more than any price gap.

Where they split

Contacts or emails on the invoice

ActiveCampaign charges for everyone in the account, whether you mail them weekly or twice a year; each plan then allows 10 to 15 sends per contact a month (pricing). Brevo charges for what you send, and its pricing FAQ sells non-expiring pay-as-you-go credits for accounts that send rarely. A large, quiet B2B database costs less on Brevo. A small list you mail often narrows the gap.

Receipts on the same bill

Brevo's pricing FAQ says every plan includes transactional email through its API and SMTP, with outbound webhooks and unlimited log retention, and its configurator counts "campaigns & transactional" in one volume (pricing). ActiveCampaign sends transactional mail through Postmark by ActiveCampaign, which its page says keeps transactional and promotional email from ever mixing (transactional); the plan cards on its pricing page do not include it, so ask what it adds to the bill. For a product company that sends thousands of receipts, that answer can outweigh the plan price.

Where the automation depth sits

ActiveCampaign puts multi-step automation and 500 AI credits on every plan, then adds cross-channel marketing and generative AI on Plus, and predictive sending, conditional content and attribution tracking on Pro (pricing). Brevo puts unlimited multi-step workflows, A/B tests, send time optimisation and web tracking on Standard, and keeps contact scoring, AI segmentation and WhatsApp for Professional at $499 a month (pricing). If scoring leads is the job, ActiveCampaign reaches it at a lower price point.

Prices at four sizes

Checked on 26 October 2026 on the ActiveCampaign pricing page, which shows yearly billing only, and the Brevo pricing page, shown here on monthly billing. Brevo's yearly billing takes 10% off.

Contacts, emails a monthActiveCampaign Starter / Plus, per month billed yearlyBrevo Starter / Standard, per month billed monthly
1,000 contacts, 10,000 emails$15 / $49$17 / $35
2,500 contacts, 15,000 emails$39 / $95$25 / $49
5,000 contacts, 20,000 emails$79 / $145$32 / $69
10,000 contacts, 40,000 emails$149 / $189$46 / $89

Each ActiveCampaign figure includes 10 sends per contact a month, so the email column matters only on the Brevo side.

A draft campaign from an AI client

ActiveCampaign's remote MCP server connects Claude or ChatGPT to the account, and a corporate Claude account needs its administrator to approve the connection first (Claude setup). Its generate_campaign tool creates a draft campaign from a prompt such as "Create a draft campaign for my webinar follow-up", and the tools a connection can use depend on the connected user's permissions (tool list). The draft is where the human check sits: the marketer opens it in ActiveCampaign, checks the segment, the links and the sender, sends a test to two colleagues, and only then schedules it. Give the AI connection a user role that cannot send, if your account allows it.

ActiveCampaign's pricing page quotes yearly billing only, which is the commitment the vendor would rather sell. Ask for the monthly figure before the 14-day trial ends, then decide.

Choose ActiveCampaign if your job is

  • Nurturing leads through branching automations until sales takes over.
  • Using predictive sending, conditional content and attribution on one plan, Pro.
  • Keeping receipts on Postmark's sending, which ActiveCampaign says never mixes with promotional email.

Choose Brevo if your job is

  • Sending newsletters, order confirmations and password resets from one account, counted in one volume.
  • Paying for emails sent rather than contacts stored, for a large but quiet database.
  • Adding SMS, WhatsApp or a light sales CRM later from the same vendor.

If the stack is the problem

Sometimes the comparison is a symptom: three tools hold contacts, nobody owns the automations, and the CRM disagrees with the email platform. The free check is one page: list every tool that stores contacts, who owns it, and which one is the source of truth when they disagree. Most stack problems show up on that page. When the stack is the problem and not the tool, a fixed one-week review such as the Startup Fixer is built for that.

FAQ

Does Brevo include a CRM?

A sales package sits beside the marketing plans on its pricing page: Sales Free at $0 with one seat, and Sales Essentials at $31 a month with one seat included.

Does ActiveCampaign have a free plan?

No. It offers a 14-day free trial with no card, and a refund if you are not satisfied after 30 days, per its pricing page.

Do transactional emails count against Brevo's volume?

Yes. The configurator measures monthly email volume as "campaigns & transactional" together, so order emails from your site use the same allowance as newsletters (pricing).
