The short answer: if you run a B2B SaaS product with about 5,000 trial users and customers, and the emails that matter are set off by what people do in the app and by Stripe billing changes, Encharge is the closer fit: Growth costs $139 a month billed yearly at 5,000 subscribers, with Stripe triggers and unlimited team members (Encharge pricing). If your leads move into a sales pipeline and you want deals and lead scoring next to the email, ActiveCampaign is built for that job, from $145 a month billed yearly on Plus at 5,000 contacts, with one user seat and the pipeline sold as an add-on (ActiveCampaign pricing). Both prices were checked on 26 October 2026.

Do the sums before either trial:

  1. Price the people who will build flows. Encharge lists unlimited team members on every plan; ActiveCampaign includes 1 seat on Starter and Plus, 3 on Pro and 5 on Enterprise (Encharge pricing, ActiveCampaign pricing). For example, three people at 5,000 contacts: Encharge Growth is $139 a month, and the first ActiveCampaign plan that lists three seats is Pro at $205, so the gap is $205 minus $139 = $66 a month, or $792 a year, both on yearly billing.
  2. Start from the data you already send. If your app already pushes events to Segment, Encharge's event guide recommends that route, but the Segment integration and the Ingest API sit on Premium, $219 a month billed yearly at 5,000 subscribers (pricing). If you only have Stripe, Growth's billing triggers work without a developer.
  3. Pick the number that proves it worked. Trial-to-paid conversion by weekly sign-up cohort, read in Stripe rather than in either email tool, with last quarter's rate noted first.

Where the choice tips

Billing events without a developer

Encharge documents 12 Stripe triggers, from Trial Started and Trial Ends to Subscription Past Due, Expanded and Contracted (Stripe triggers). The same page warns that Trial Ends fires whether or not the customer has already converted, so a Check Condition step on subscription status belongs straight after it. ActiveCampaign lists a Stripe integration from Plus upwards on its pricing page without saying which Stripe events become triggers; check that before you design a dunning flow around it.

Where the lead goes after the email

ActiveCampaign sells the sales half inside its own account: the Enhanced CRM add-on brings pipelines and sales engagement, lead scoring sits in that Pipelines add-on, and Salesforce is an Enterprise integration (pricing). Encharge assumes the sales team lives elsewhere and syncs two ways with HubSpot and Salesforce on Premium (pricing). If no CRM exists yet, ActiveCampaign can be one. If HubSpot or Salesforce already runs sales, Encharge Premium feeds it.

How much behaviour you can pour in

Encharge caps events separately from subscribers: 50 times your plan's subscriber limit a month on Growth and 100 times on Premium, where an event is a page visit, an API call or a Segment event, and past the cap the account stops receiving events rather than moving up a tier (pricing explained). For example, the 5,000-subscriber Growth tier allows 50 x 5,000 = 250,000 events a month. A busy docs site with tracking on every page uses it up faster than the app.

What each costs, checked on 26 October 2026

US dollars a month; ActiveCampaign's page shows yearly billing only (Encharge pricing, ActiveCampaign pricing).

List sizeEncharge GrowthEncharge PremiumActiveCampaign StarterActiveCampaign PlusActiveCampaign Pro
5,000$139 yearly, $179 monthly$219 yearly, $269 monthly$79$145$205
10,000$199 yearly, $249 monthly$319 yearly, $399 monthly$149$189$375

Encharge's smallest tier is 2,000 subscribers at $79 a month billed yearly; ActiveCampaign starts at 1,000 contacts for $15 on Starter (ActiveCampaign pricing). Encharge charges $100 for every 100,000 emails past the plan's send allowance of 10 times subscribers on Growth and 12 times on Premium (Encharge pricing).

An agent tags the quiet trials

ActiveCampaign's MCP server lets Claude or ChatGPT create tags, set custom fields and add contacts to automations by plain request; you copy the Remote MCP URL from Settings, then Developer, and ActiveCampaign branding has to be switched on for that option to appear (MCP article). Export from your product's admin the trial accounts with no login for seven days, hand the list to the agent and ask it to create the tag "Trial: quiet 7 days" and apply it to those contacts. An automation that starts on that tag sends the nudge. Before the automation goes live, a person opens ten tagged contacts and checks each against the product admin; one mismatch stops the launch.

Encharge needs no agent for this, because the product event is the trigger. Its documented AI is the Magic Writer, which drafts subject lines and emails in the builder for you to edit (Magic Writer guide).

Test both before paying for either

Both trials last 14 days, and ActiveCampaign asks for no card (ActiveCampaign pricing, Encharge pricing). Spend the first afternoon on paper: list the five onboarding emails your trial needs and, beside each, the event that should send it. Mark which plan of each tool has that trigger. If four of the five depend on Stripe or in-app events, the sheet has already decided.

ActiveCampaign's $15 Starter price opens the account, and the cap of five actions per automation on that plan is where the move to Plus gets sold, so build your longest flow during the trial and see which plan it needs (ActiveCampaign pricing). Contact migration is listed among ActiveCampaign's free services; Encharge offers free done-for-you migration only on yearly Premium plans (Encharge pricing).

Choose Encharge if your job is

  • Turning trials into paying accounts with emails set off by app events and Stripe billing changes.
  • Letting marketing, product and success teams all build flows, with no seat limit.
  • Feeding a HubSpot or Salesforce instance you already run, through Premium's two-way sync.

Choose ActiveCampaign if your job is

  • Passing scored leads to a sales pipeline that lives in the same account as the email.
  • Starting small, with 1,000 contacts on a $15 plan billed yearly.
  • Working through an AI assistant on any plan, over its MCP server.

FAQ

Does Encharge send the emails, or do I need a separate sending service?

Encharge sends them itself, and its pricing FAQ says cold or unsolicited email is not allowed: only inbound leads, product users and contacts who gave permission (Encharge pricing).

Which is cheaper at 10,000 contacts?

On yearly billing, ActiveCampaign Starter at $149 and Plus at $189 sit below Encharge Growth at $199 (ActiveCampaign pricing, Encharge pricing). Add seats and the order changes: three users means ActiveCampaign Pro at $375.

Can a free plan stand in for the trial?

Neither pricing page lists a free plan; both offer 14-day trials, per the Encharge and ActiveCampaign pricing pages. Run the five-email sheet first so the fortnight tests the plan you would buy.
