How to Use Encharge to Convert Trial Users With Stripe Data

The short answer: add your sending domain, connect Stripe with a restricted key in test mode, start from Encharge's trial conversion template so each new trial gets a welcome matched to its job role, add a trial-ending email with a check that skips people who already pay, mark conversion with a Goal step, then switch to the live key and let the first sends go out in small batches. If your trials already run through Stripe, Encharge's twelve Stripe triggers (Stripe triggers) cover this job before a developer has to write a single event.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

This is one job: getting more of the people who start a trial to become paying customers, using the billing data you already have in Stripe. For what Encharge is and what it costs, see the Encharge glossary entry.

What you need first:

  1. The tier, counted the way Encharge counts. Anonymous visitors who enter a flow count as subscribers (pricing explained). For example, 1,400 identified users plus 700 anonymous visitors who entered a pricing-page flow make 1,400 + 700 = 2,100, which is past the 2,000 tier ($99 a month billed monthly) and into the 5,000 tier at $179, on the pricing page checked on 24 October 2026.
  2. A Stripe login with developer access, and your sign-up form fields. The template branches on job role, so the field has to exist in your sign-up flow and reach Stripe or Encharge.
  3. Your current trial-to-paid rate, from Stripe, for the last three months. That is the number the flow has to move, and the Goal step in step 6 is how you will read it.

Seven steps from Stripe to a converted trial

1. Add and verify your sending domain

Since 31 January 2024 a verified domain is mandatory to send from Encharge, and it also removes the "via encharge-mail.com" notice and builds your own domain's reputation (domain article).

2. Connect Stripe in test mode first

Go to Settings, then Apps, click Stripe and follow the wizard. It asks for a restricted API key with read access to charges, customers, events, checkout sessions, invoices, prices and subscriptions, and write access to webhook endpoints (Stripe integration overview). Fields map automatically. In the last step, choose whether to sync existing customers or only new and changed ones. Do all of this with a test-mode key, check that test customers appear with their subscription status, then swap in the live key.

3. Start from the trial conversion template

The "Convert Trial Users With Targeted Onboarding Campaigns" template starts on the Stripe Trial Started trigger, splits new trials into three buckets by job role with a filter, and sends each bucket its own welcome, followed by Wait steps and a sequence (template article). The filter is the Check Condition step, which can test fields, tags, email activity, events, page visits and segment membership (Check Condition). Replace job role with whatever field predicts what a new user needs first.

4. Add the trial-ending email, with a guard

The Trial Ends trigger can fire a chosen number of days before a trial ends, on the day, or after. Encharge's own note matters here: it fires whatever the customer's paying status, so someone who converted on day three still gets "your trial is ending" unless you stop it (Stripe triggers). Put a Check Condition step straight after the trigger that tests the field holding the subscription status, and connect only the not-yet-paying path to the email. Trial Expired, for trials that end without converting, deserves its own short flow.

5. Let the Magic Writer draft, then edit it yourself

In either email builder, the Magic Writer button opens a drawer: pick a use case, describe the email in a line, set the tone and your product name, and generate (Magic Writer article). AI Autocomplete, which rewrites or extends a selection of 30 to 300 characters, works in the Simple builder only. The draft is the AI's step; the human check is yours. Before the flow is activated, the person who owns the product reads every claim in the email against the live product and the current price list, because a trial user who is promised a feature that is not there will not be back.

6. Mark the conversion with a Goal step

Place a Goal step where a person has converted, for example after a check that their subscription is active, and choose whether the flow ends for them there (Goal step). The step's People tab lists who reached it, and the flows page shows entries against goals for the last seven days. Compare that with the baseline you took from Stripe.

7. Go live, and expect the first send to be slow

Every new Encharge account goes through email throttling: the first emails are deliberately delayed to warm up your domain, and a send to 1,000 or more contacts can take several hours (throttling article). Encharge recommends starting with batches of 50, 100 and 200 contacts, then 1,000, and not using a new account for anything time-sensitive.

When you want product events too

Billing data tells you who paid. It does not tell you who never finished setting up. For that, your developers send events through the Ingest API, the JavaScript tracker or Segment; if Segment is already in place, Encharge recommends using it (events article). Check the plan first: event-based segments, the Ingest API and the Segment integration are not available on Growth (pricing page).

Site tracking for pricing-page visits works through browser cookies, which Encharge's site tracking article says outright. For visitors in the EU, Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive allows storing or reading information on a device only with consent, apart from what is strictly necessary for the service (consolidated text on EUR-Lex), so the snippet belongs behind your consent banner.

What the help centre warns about

  • Trial Ends without a status check. Paying customers get the expiry email.
  • An old Stripe connection. The integration was rebuilt on 18 May 2023; connections made before then need to be reconnected and their Stripe triggers replaced to use the new features (Stripe integration overview).
  • Imported lists nobody asked for. Purchased or scraped addresses risk a permanent ban, and contacts from trade show business cards usually do not count as solicited (unsolicited contacts).
  • Pruning to save money. Heavy archiving combined with fresh imports can get an account reviewed or paused (pricing explained).

Counting anonymous flow entrants as subscribers is a choice the vendor made, and it is a sensible one for them: an open pricing-page flow grows the bill as fast as it grows the funnel. Filter anonymous visitors out of any flow that does not need them.

FAQ

Can I test without touching live billing?

Yes. Stripe's test mode issues its own restricted keys, and Encharge connects to them the same way as to a live account, per the Stripe integration overview. Swap the key when testing is done.

Why did a paying customer get the trial-ending email?

Because the Trial Ends trigger runs regardless of paying status. Add a Check Condition step on the subscription status field right after it, as the Stripe triggers article shows.

Do I need Segment?

No. Encharge accepts events through its own API and JavaScript tracking as well; it suggests Segment only if your company already uses it, and the direct API has no extra cost, per the events article.
