What Is Surfer? Content Scoring for Search and AI Answers

By Joris van Huët · Surfer's own site

The short answer: If your team writes or refreshes 10 to 30 articles a month and wants each draft checked against the pages already ranking, Surfer is built for that: the Standard plan covers 30 documents a month and 3 seats for $119 a month on monthly billing (pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026). It is a writing and optimisation workspace, not a backlink database or a crawler.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

What decides the plan:

  1. The price of one document. Standard is $119 / 30 = $3.97 a document and Discovery $59 / 10 = $5.90, on monthly billing from the pricing page checked on 24 October 2026. Unused limits do not roll over, per the pricing FAQ.
  2. The pages you already have. Content Audit reads your Search Console data and suggests which pages to refresh first, per the refresh guide.
  3. How you will judge it. Surfer's score guide calls a Content Score over 66 ready to compete. Judge the edited pages by their Search Console clicks, not the score.

What Surfer does

The core is the Content Editor. You enter up to 20 keywords, and Surfer turns the pages ranking for them into guidelines: terms, structure, questions, and a live Content Score made of an SEO Score and an AI Search Score, as the Content Editor overview describes. You write yourself or let Surfer AI draft, then run Auto-Optimize, internal linking and a plagiarism check.

Around the editor sit Content Audit with rank-drop alerts, keyword research, a topical map and tracking of brand mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI features. The MCP connector brings that data into Claude or ChatGPT on Pro and above, and on AI Search Analytics.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits content teams and agencies that publish to a schedule and want writers and editors working from one brief. Zapier and API access come with Peace of Mind, per the pricing page.

It suits less well a team whose problem sits outside the text: crawl errors, slow templates or a thin backlink profile. Surfer's own guide also warns that chasing a score of 100 can hurt the page.

USD, from the Surfer pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026; EUR billing is offered too. New accounts get 7 days of Pro, which converts to your chosen plan unless you cancel, per the trial article. A trial is there to get your drafts into the tool, so copy out anything you want to keep before you cancel.

Next to NeuronWriter, Frase and Semrush

NeuronWriter does the same editor job for less: Bronze is $23 a month on monthly billing for 25 documents, and unlimited team members, integrations and its API and MCP start on Gold at $69 (NeuronWriter pricing, checked on 24 October 2026). Frase reaches further into publishing, with an agent that can publish on its own and a hosted CMS, from $49 a month month to month (Frase pricing, checked on 24 October 2026). Semrush is the pick when the bottleneck is research, not writing.

Getting started

How to use Surfer walks through a refresh of pages just outside the top 10.

FAQ

What does "unlimited documents" mean on Peace of Mind?

A fair usage limit of 500 documents a month on monthly billing, or 6,000 a year on annual, according to Surfer's fair usage policy.

What happens to my work if I cancel the trial?

You keep access until the 7 days end; then the account expires and stored data is lost, per the trial article.

Will I pay VAT?

Surfer is tax-registered in the UK and the EU, so customers there have VAT added unless they enter a valid VAT ID, per the pricing FAQ.
