Frase vs Surfer: A Publishing Agent or a Scoring Editor

The short answer: if you suspect the problem is what happens after a page goes live, because good articles slide and nobody refreshes them, Frase is built around that loop: its Professional plan covers 40 articles a month, 3 seats and decay watching on 75 pages for $129 on monthly billing (Frase pricing). If your writers want a score beside the draft and publishing stays in their hands, Surfer's Standard plan does that with 30 documents and 3 seats for $119 (Surfer pricing).

Both read the pages that rank and tell you what your draft is missing. Frase then keeps going: it can publish to your CMS and come back with a rewrite when the page drops. Surfer stops at the draft and leaves the rest to your process. Which is better depends on whether your process exists.
What decides it:
- The cost of one article. For example, Frase Starter works out at $49 / 10 = $4.90 per article and Surfer Discovery at $59 / 10 = $5.90 per document, monthly billing on the Frase and Surfer pricing pages. At the team tier the gap narrows to $129 for 40 against $119 for 30.
- The CMS you already run. Frase publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity or Wix, or to its own FraseCMS. Surfer connects WordPress and Google Docs from Standard and adds Contentful on Pro, per its pricing page. Of the two, only Frase lists Webflow.
- A holdout, so you know it worked. Pick ten comparable pages. Refresh or guard five with the tool, leave five alone, and compare Search Console clicks after eight weeks. The scores inside both tools rise whenever you edit, so they cannot answer this.

Where they part ways
Who presses publish
Frase's agent drafts and, when you switch it on, publishes by itself; the agent page says every content type starts in review and that every publish and every change to a live page comes to you first until you widen its remit. Surfer has no publish step of its own. Its editor hands you a scored draft and the push to WordPress or Google Docs is yours, which suits a team with an editor who signs things off.
What happens when a page decays
Frase's Content Guard watches a guarded article's rank; when it drops, Frase drafts an update and, unless auto-apply is on, nothing changes until you approve it, per the Content Guard guide. Admins choose between always asking, applying only low-risk fixes such as meta titles, or setting their own rules. Surfer's Content Audit, per the FAQ on its pricing page, notifies you about ranking drops and suggests which articles to refresh. The rewrite itself goes back into the Content Editor, by a person.
Agent access on the entry plan
Frase includes its MCP server, CLI and API on every plan, with 5,000 requests a month on Starter, per its pricing page. Surfer's MCP starts at Pro, $219 a month on monthly billing, or on the $95 AI Search Analytics plan, which lists no documents. A solo marketer who wants Claude to run research inside the tool pays $49 on one side and $219 on the other.
Free before paid
The holdout needs no software: a Search Console export, a spreadsheet and ten pages. Set it up first. Then start with the trial that asks for no card, which is Frase's 7 days on its pricing page, and refresh your five test pages there. Surfer's trial gives 7 days of Pro but asks for billing details and converts unless you cancel, per its trial article, so run it second, with the end date in your calendar.
The price list on 24 October 2026
| Tier | Frase, monthly | Frase, yearly per month | Surfer, monthly | Surfer, yearly per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry | Starter, $49 | $39 | Discovery, $59 | $49 |
| Team | Professional, $129 | $103 | Standard, $119 | $99 |
| Larger team | Scale, $299 | $239 | Pro, $219 | $182 |
| Top self-serve | Enterprise, custom | Custom | Peace of Mind, $359 | $299 |
USD, from the Frase pricing page and the Surfer pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026. Frase's Starter stops at its monthly limits instead of billing overage; on Professional and Scale, pay-as-you-go is optional and off by default.
One step by an agent, one check by a person
Frase's MCP guide lists requests such as "Research this keyword, build a brief, and write a draft optimized for AI visibility", run from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. The same guide adds that Claude requests permission on first use of each tool, narrates what it is doing, and confirms with you before anything is published or changed. The check that belongs to you: an editor reads the draft against the brief and the cited sources, fixes claims the brand cannot stand behind, and only then approves the publish.
Frase also publishes a page comparing itself with Surfer, marked as verified in August 2026 (Frase vs Surfer SEO). A vendor's own comparison page grades its own homework. Use it as a feature checklist, then let the holdout above decide.
Choose Frase if your job is
- Running the whole content loop with a small team: research, draft, publish, and fixes when pages slip.
- Publishing to Webflow, Sanity or Wix without copy and paste.
- Driving the tool from Claude or ChatGPT on the entry plan.
Choose Surfer if your job is
- Giving several writers one set of guidelines and a live score while they write.
- Keeping a human editor between the draft and the CMS on every piece.
- Tracking how often AI answers mention your brand, with 50 prompts refreshed daily on Pro.
Sometimes neither tool is the gap. If nobody owns the content calendar or signs off drafts, that is a team problem, and an interim CMO sorts out ownership faster than software does. I sell that work.
Entries for both: Frase and Surfer.
FAQ
Does Frase publish without asking?
Only if you let it. Its agent page says everything starts in review, and Content Guard waits for approval unless an admin turns on auto-apply in its settings.
Is Surfer's MCP available on the Standard plan?
No. Surfer's credits and limits page lists MCP on Pro, Peace of Mind, Enterprise and AI Search Analytics, and on some older plans and trials.
What happens when I reach the monthly limit?
On Frase Starter, work stops at the limit until the month resets; Professional and Scale can switch on pay-as-you-go, per the Frase pricing page. Surfer charges one Content Editor credit per editor you create, and the credits page points to the pricing page for each plan's allowance.
