What Is Optimizely? CMS, Testing and Agents on a Quote

By Joris van Huët · Optimizely's own site

The short answer: if you want a price for Optimizely Web Experimentation on its own, the plans page will not give you one: every plan is "individually packaged" after a conversation about your needs, and what gets packaged is three platforms, an agentic CMS, experimentation (web and feature) and an Agent Platform, sold to "10,000+ brands" with "2m+" experiments run (Optimizely plans, experimentation page, checked on 5 November 2026). It suits an enterprise or upper mid-market team that will put content, tests and agents with one vendor; a team that wants a testing tool with a fixed bill is offered more than it asked for.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

What decides it:

  1. Price a published alternative first. Kameleoon lists PBX Starter from $495 a month for 50,000 monthly tracked users and up to 10 experiments (Kameleoon plans). For example, at 6 experiments a month that is $495 / 6 = $82.50 per experiment; divide Optimizely's quote by your own count and the two sit on one line.
  2. Start from what the stack already holds. A site on Optimizely's CMS has native testing listed in its plan, and audiences in Twilio Segment reach Web and Feature Experimentation through the Data Platform (Optimizely plans, Segment audiences).
  3. Decide the read before the first test. The results page shows improvement with a confidence interval and an Experiment Health check for traffic imbalance (results page); the programme reports leave out experiments run on Stats Accelerator (system tools).

Which product is which

The products page lists nine (all products). The CMS is sold as agentic, with approvals and webhooks (CMS page). Experimentation is Web Experimentation, front-end tests in a visual editor behind one snippet, and Feature Experimentation, server-side tests and flags through SDKs, with Personalization, warehouse-native Analytics and Feature Management beside them (experimentation page). Commerce is Configured Commerce for B2B and Commerce Connect for B2C (commerce page). The Agent Platform, which the site calls Mark, offers 50+ prebuilt agents, a no-code workflow builder, human approval before anything goes live and MCP connectors, activated through your account manager (Agent Platform page).

The statistics, and the two meanings of segment

Stats Engine lets you act on results while an experiment runs, "regardless of preset sample sizes" (Stats Engine). Stats Accelerator moves traffic hourly toward the variation furthest from the baseline, needs two variations plus the baseline, and reports absolute improvement in percentage points to offset the bias its own reallocation creates (Stats Accelerator overview). Program Management, still a common search, is gone from the products page; the docs file hypotheses and approvals under Collaboration, and the programme overview and win rate under Reporting for Experimentation (Collaboration docs, reporting dashboards).

"Segment" means two things. On the results page it is a filter by browser, campaign, device, referrer or source, for exploration and not for decisions; Web Experimentation does not segment by audience (segment your results). Twilio Segment is the CDP whose Engage audiences sync into the Data Platform.

Who it suits, and who it does not

A team with engineers on feature flags, analysts on a warehouse and content in the same vendor's CMS. Less so a marketing lead who wants a trial before a sales call: the plans and get-started pages offer a conversation, not a login (get started).

What it costs

Nothing is printed; the plans page asks for your digital needs and builds the plan from them (Optimizely plans, checked on 5 November 2026). A page with no figures is written so the first number you hear is the one Optimizely's team assembles from the requirements you give it, and the page asks for those first; write them down before the call with the products you do not need crossed out, because each of the nine products is also a line the package can grow by.

How it compares

AB Tasty. Its site now redirects to Wingify, which quotes on monthly active users and gives 30 days of trial without a card (Wingify pricing). Choose it for a trial before the sales call and heatmaps in the same suite.

VWO. The same Wingify quote. Wingify's comparison page concedes that Optimizely's developer ecosystem is more established, while claiming native heatmaps for itself (Wingify vs Optimizely); a rival marking Optimizely's homework is still worth reading for the concessions.

Kameleoon. Kameleoon lists a Starter price and a 30-day trial; choose it when a price on a page matters more than a suite.

LaunchDarkly. LaunchDarkly is flags first, with a Developer plan at $0 a month and experiment approvals reserved for Enterprise (LaunchDarkly pricing); choose it when engineering owns the programme.

Getting started

How to use Optimizely runs a three-variation checkout test on Stats Accelerator and has Mark summarise the result over MCP. When the decision is whether the website, the tests and the agents belong with one supplier, a tool page cannot settle it; the Startup Fixer is the one-week stack review I sell for that question.

FAQ

Is Web Experimentation sold on its own?

The plans page lists experimentation as one of three core products and packages every plan individually (Optimizely plans). Ask for experimentation alone, and for the price of each product offered on top.

What is Stats Accelerator?

A traffic allocation mode that sends more visitors to the variation most likely to reach significance, updated hourly, for experiments with at least three variations including the original; not for A/A tests (Stats Accelerator overview).

Does Optimizely have a free trial?

Not on its plans or get-started pages on 5 November 2026 (get started); Kameleoon's PBX trial runs 30 days if you want hands-on time first (Kameleoon plans).
