The short answer: set up a custom sending subdomain under Settings, Domains, let Smart Warming run, switch on double opt-in and Smart Nudge, publish a welcome automation, create referral rewards and milestones under Referral Program, place the referral block in every post, and add free recommendations; then read referral numbers weekly, by hand or through the beehiiv MCP, allowing 6 to 8 weeks of warming before any big push.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

The cheapest subscriber is one your readers bring you. beehiiv builds that into the product: a referral program that rewards readers at milestones, and a recommendations network where publications point their new subscribers at each other. Both work only on a list that trusts you, which is why the first four steps here are about deliverability, not growth. For plans and prices, see the beehiiv glossary entry.

Rule of thumb before you start:

  1. Price the program on paper. Referrals and custom domains need a paid plan; Lite is $59 a month on monthly billing at 1,000 subscribers, or $49 billed yearly (pricing page, checked on 24 October 2026). For example, if a digital reward unlocks at 3 referrals and costs you nothing to deliver, 30 rewards a month means 30 x 3 = 90 new readers for the plan fee.
  2. Use the readers you already have. The referral block goes into the posts you already send; it needs no new content, only a reward worth sharing.
  3. Measure referrals per subscriber. The Referral Program dashboard shows subscribers with referrals, total readers referred and referrals per subscriber (referral guide). Write down the starting figure.

Step 1: Connect a custom domain

Click Settings, Domains, Set up custom domain, and choose Set up both, a web domain and a sending domain, which beehiiv recommends for most publications (custom domain guide). Send from a subdomain such as email.yoursite.com to protect the main domain's reputation, and if you are moving from another platform, keep the sending domain you use today. Then choose automatic setup or add the DNS records yourself. On Cloudflare, set each beehiiv record to DNS only; proxied records cannot be detected.

Step 2: Let Smart Warming run

Smart Warming starts by itself once a custom domain is connected and the publication sends to more than 100 subscribers, per the Smart Warming guide. It sends a growing share of each post from your domain and the rest from beehiiv's shared domain, until all mail comes from yours; for publications sending more than once a week this typically takes 6 to 8 weeks. Track it under Settings, Domains, where a yellow tag shows it in progress. Do not launch a referral push in week one of warming.

Step 3: Switch on double opt-in and Smart Nudge

Go to Settings, Emails, Preset Emails, and toggle on Double Opt-in Email; optionally set an Opt-in Redirect URL. Then toggle on Smart Nudge, which sends one reminder to subscribers still pending after 48 hours (double opt-in guide). Pending subscribers receive nothing, not even posts, until they confirm. That matters twice for referrals: a referred reader is someone a friend nominated, and the GDPR treats consent as something you must be able to demonstrate (Article 7(1), EUR-Lex); the confirmation click is that record.

Step 4: Publish a welcome automation

Go to Automations, scroll to Quick start templates, and use Welcome email (with re-entry), or build one from scratch (automation guide). A template opens with its trigger inactive: click the trigger, activate it, then publish. With double opt-in on, the welcome email goes out only after confirmation. Mention the referral program in it, because a new reader is never more willing to share than in the first week.

Step 5: Create the rewards and milestones

From the left panel, click Referral Program, then + New Referral. Name the reward and choose a type: physical (beehiiv works with Slingshot to dropship merchandise), promo code, digital file or link, or a gift of a paid subscription. Set the number of referrals needed, write a description and add an image. In the next step, write the milestone email the reader receives on reaching it (referral guide). Lite allows 3 milestones, Pro unlimited. Start with a digital reward at a low milestone; a reward you must post by hand turns growth into logistics.

Step 6: Put the referral block in every post

In the post editor, type /Referral Program and place the block, then preview the post. Each subscriber sees a personal link and their own progress. The block appears only in emailed posts, not on the web version, because the personal tracking depends on the subscriber's inbox.

Step 7: Add free recommendations

Free recommendations are mutual promotions between publications at no cost to either side: you show other newsletters to your new subscribers, and they can show yours (recommendations guide). You can feature up to 4 at once. Pick publications your readers would thank you for, and invite them to recommend you back.

Step 8: Read the numbers through an agent

The beehiiv MCP connects Claude, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex: click Settings, MCP, choose the client and follow the on-screen authorisation. It sees only what your workspace role allows. Each Friday, ask it for new subscribers by source, referrals per subscriber and which posts drove referrals, against the previous four weeks. On paid plans it can also edit posts and build automations; keep those changes in your hands, and use the agent to read and suggest.

What beehiiv's support articles warn about

  • Proxied DNS on Cloudflare. beehiiv cannot verify records set to Proxied.
  • Referral blocks on the web. They show only in the emailed version of a post.
  • Pending subscribers. With double opt-in, nothing reaches them until they confirm, including the welcome email.
  • A long warm-up. Smart Warming can take longer for publications that send less than weekly.

A referral program is designed to make the list bigger, and a bigger list is what newsletter platforms are paid on. Bigger is not the goal; readers who open are. Watch the open rate of referred subscribers against everyone else's before you raise the rewards.

FAQ

Does the referral program work on the free plan?

No. The referral guide marks it as available on paid plans, and on the free trial.

How long until all mail comes from my domain?

Typically 6 to 8 weeks for publications sending more than once a week, according to the Smart Warming guide; it varies with list size, frequency and engagement.

Can I use the MCP on the free plan?

Yes, read-only. Creating and editing content through it needs a paid plan, per the MCP guide.
