The short answer: for one WordPress site under 25,000 visits a month, both cost $35 a month on monthly billing, so the single-site decision rests on what each plan isolates; at ten sites they part company, with WP Engine's Essential tier at $130 a month for ten sites sharing 100,000 visits and Kinsta's WP 10 at $225 a month for ten installs, each in its own container, metered on 125GB of bandwidth (USD, checked on 26 October 2026 on the Kinsta pricing page and the WP Engine plans page). Choose Kinsta if your job is a handful of revenue sites where one site's trouble must never touch another's. Choose WP Engine if your job is a portfolio of lighter brand and campaign sites on one low bill, where marketing does the publishing.

Before you compare the cards:

  1. The ten-site gap, in a year. For example, Kinsta WP 10 at $225 against WP Engine's ten-site Essential tier at $130 is $95 a month, or $1,140 a year on monthly billing. Spread WP Engine's 100,000 visits over ten sites and each averages 10,000 a month. Figures from the Kinsta and WP Engine pricing pages.
  2. What counts as a site where you are now. WP Engine counts the site, and each site holds up to three environments, production, staging and development, per its environments article. Kinsta counts WordPress installs and gives each one a free standard staging environment, per its staging docs. List your live sites and leave staging copies out of the count on both.
  3. The meter you will read after the move. WP Engine's Usage page reports billable visits; Kinsta's Plan usage chart, in its overage terms, reports visits or bandwidth and emails alerts at 80% and 100%. Check one of them on the first of every month.

Read on 26 October 2026 on the Kinsta pricing page and the WP Engine plans page, USD before tax. The Kinsta multi-site plans shown are its bandwidth-metered ones, from 40GB on WP 2 to 125GB on WP 10; Kinsta's cards show no introductory price beyond the free first month; the WP Engine annual figures are first-year prices, and its footnote says renewal pricing is subject to change.

What separates them beyond the price

Shared, or a container each

WP Engine's comparison table lists the Essential environment as shared, with isolated resources, phone support and a 99.99% uptime SLA starting on Business at $400 a month billed annually (plans page). Kinsta puts every site in its own isolated container on every plan, per its homepage. For ten campaign microsites, shared is fine. For one store and a membership site on the same account, it is the reason to pay more.

How each counts traffic

WP Engine counts one billable visit per unique IP address per day in UTC, sums all environments on the plan, leaves out known and suspected bots and static files, and charges overages monthly; its billable visits article prices them at $2 per 1,000 for its Startup, Professional, Growth, Scale and Agency plans and does not name Essential, and visits can only be raised by upgrading. Kinsta charges $0.50 per 1,000 visits on its Single 35k plan and $0.50 per GB on bandwidth plans (overage terms). Ask WP Engine in writing which rate applies to Essential before you sign.

What each sells as an extra

Both sell plugin-update automation on top of the base plan. On WP Engine Essential, AI-powered automatic plugin and theme updates and uptime monitoring are optional add-ons, with one licence of each included from Business (plans page). Kinsta's Automatic Updates, with visual regression testing, start at $3 per site a month (pricing page). Kinsta also caps transactional email from the site at 150 a day on Single 35k and WP 2, per its email docs, which matters for a shop sending receipts.

A draft post by agent, published by a person

WP Engine documents an AI MCP server in closed beta that lists the sites on your account and runs WordPress abilities on them, from creating posts to managing plugins. Kinsta's agent route is an MCP server you build on its API, per its tutorial, with tools for hosting work such as clearing caches and cloning sites rather than for content.

  1. If your account is in the beta, create a user API key in the WP Engine User Portal and register the server in Claude Code, as the MCP overview shows.
  2. Ask it to list your active sites, then to create a draft post on the staging site with your title and body. The documented flow searches for the site's create-post ability, runs it and returns the post ID and an admin link.
  3. The human check: an editor opens that admin link, reads the draft, fixes what is wrong and publishes it, or deletes it. The beta notice says endpoints, tools and authentication may change, so keep the prompt and the review step written down.

Start with the count, then the card

The free work comes first: the site count and the busiest month from point 2, priced against the table. Kinsta adds a free first month on Single and WP 2, with its 30-day money-back window starting after it (money-back terms), so one real site can run there for a month before any charge.

WP Engine's card leads with "$28.00 per month", which is $336 taken today for a year, and its footnote limits that price to new customers buying Essential, with renewal pricing subject to change (plans page). Twelve months are booked at a price set to win the account; the thirteenth is priced once leaving has become a migration project. Ask for the renewal figure in writing before you pay the first.

Choose Kinsta if

  • A store, a membership site or a lead engine shares the account with other sites, and each must be isolated.
  • You prefer bandwidth billing across several installs to a shared visit pool.
  • You want unlimited users with permission levels for agencies and freelancers.

Choose WP Engine if

  • You run many light brand, campaign or regional sites and want the lowest cost per site.
  • Staging and development copies of every site should not count as extra sites.
  • Marketing wants an agent to draft posts across sites, and you can join the beta.

The Kinsta entry and the WP Engine entry cover each product; how to use WP Engine rehearses plugin updates on staging and how to use Kinsta automates them with visual checks.

FAQ

Which is cheaper for one site?

Neither on monthly billing: both are $35. Billed annually, WP Engine's first year is $336 and Kinsta's year is $350 after a free month, per the WP Engine and Kinsta pricing pages, checked on 26 October 2026.

Do staging sites cost extra?

Not at the base level on either. WP Engine sites hold production, staging and development environments (environments article); Kinsta gives each install one free standard staging environment and sells premium staging at $20 per site a month (pricing page).

Can I add visits to a WP Engine plan without upgrading?

No. Its billable visits article says visits cannot be bought as an extension and rise only with a plan upgrade.
