Elai.io vs Synthesia: Minutes Per Render or Credits Per Change

The short answer: under 15 minutes of finished video a month you are clearing a backlog of slide decks, not running a studio, and either entry plan covers it: Elai.io Creator is $29 a month on monthly billing for 15 render minutes, and Synthesia Starter is $19 with 10 included minutes plus credits (Elai pricing, Synthesia pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). The difference shows on the second render. Elai deducts the full length again for any fix, while Synthesia charges only for the footage it regenerates, so decks that get corrected after review are cheaper on Synthesia. Elai earns its place when finance wants a fixed number of render minutes, or when Panopto already hosts your training, though its Panopto integration sits on Enterprise.

Work it out on paper:
- Price the fix, not the first draft. For example, an 8-slide onboarding deck becomes a 7-minute video and the reviewer spots a wrong product name after the first render. On Elai that is 7 + 7 = 14 of Creator's 15 minutes, because every render deducts the video's length again (render article). On Synthesia the first version comes out of the 10 included minutes and the fix costs only the seconds regenerated (Synthesia pricing).
- Open the deck you already have. Both turn speaker notes into the script. Elai does it in Editable Mode, which keeps text boxes and images editable (PowerPoint guide); Synthesia writes a script itself for any slide without notes and turns 4:3 decks into 16:9 (PowerPoint article).
- Decide what success looks like. The questions new hires still ask in their second week, counted before and after the video replaces the live walkthrough.
Elai has become part of Panopto and sells to learning and development teams (Elai homepage). Synthesia sells to the same buyer, at larger scale and with more languages. On a deck job they look alike until something has to change.
From deck to video, in each
| Step | Elai.io | Synthesia |
|---|---|---|
| Speaker notes | Become the speech in Editable Mode | Become the script |
| Slides without notes | AI writes the speech if you switch it on, from Creator | A script is written automatically |
| Layout on import | Elements stay editable and may shift slightly | 4:3 decks converted to 16:9 |
| Your fonts | Upload from Team | Not on Basic or Starter |
| A fix after rendering | The full length is deducted again | Only new footage is charged |
| Languages | 75+, voice cloning in 28 | 140+ languages and voices |
| SCORM | Enterprise | Enterprise |

Three things a real deck will show
The second render
Elai deducts minutes when you start a render, and again for a typo fix, a swapped image or a changed voice; previews are free, so the check belongs there (render article). Synthesia draws credits at generation only, never while you edit or preview, and counts new footage (Synthesia pricing). A deck that goes through legal review twice is where the two plans stop looking alike.
What the preview leaves out
Elai's previews skip transitions and the avatar's lip-synced speech, both added during rendering, so a finished file can run slightly longer than the estimate (render article). Keep a margin of minutes for that.
Reach
Synthesia lists 140+ languages and voices (Synthesia pricing). Elai lists 75+ languages with 450+ accents and voice cloning in 28 (Elai homepage). For a training library in Dutch, French and English both are enough; for twenty markets, count first.
Price per finished minute
| Plan | Price | Minutes | Per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elai Creator, monthly | $29 | 15 | $1.93 |
| Elai Creator, annual | $23 a month | 15 a month | $1.53 |
| Elai Team, monthly | $125 | 50 | $2.50 |
| Elai Team, annual | $100 a month | 50 a month | $2.00 |
| Synthesia Starter, monthly | $19 | about 22 | $0.86 |
| Synthesia Starter, yearly | $14 a month | about 22 a month | $0.64 |
The Elai per-minute figures are printed on its pricing page. Synthesia prints no per-minute price, so the figures here divide by the vendor's own estimate of about 22 minutes a month on Starter: $19 / 22 = $0.86 and $14 / 22 = $0.64 (Synthesia pricing). Synthesia's credits article counts the base credits too and arrives at about 27, so 22 is the cautious figure. All in US dollars, checked on 26 October 2026.
A draft from every new deck, through the API
Elai's API reference lists separate calls to inspect a presentation before importing it, create a video from a PPTX, render a video and translate one (API reference). That separation is what makes an agent safe here. An automation watching the shared training folder sends each new deck to the inspect call, then to create-from-PPTX, and stops: the video exists as an unrendered draft. The human check: the course owner opens the draft, plays the free preview, corrects names and numbers in the speech text, and only then presses Render once. Elai's pricing table lists the public API from Creator upwards (Elai pricing).
The badge on the dearer minute
Elai's pricing page marks Team as Recommended, at $2.50 a minute on monthly billing, beside Creator at $1.93 (Elai pricing). Team buys more minutes, three editors and 4K, but each minute costs more, and the badge sits on the plan that earns Elai more per render. Pick Team for the seats, if you need them, not for the label.
Try both at no cost
Elai's Free plan gives one render minute for the whole account, three slides per video and no card (free plan article); Synthesia Basic gives 10 minutes a month with a watermark (Synthesia pricing). Import the same three slides into both, render once, then correct one sentence and render again. Watch which balance moves.
Which for whom
Choose Elai.io if your job is turning a steady flow of decks into training videos on a fixed number of render minutes that finance can predict, with Panopto delivery on an Enterprise contract later.
Choose Synthesia if your job is a deck library that keeps changing after review, or that has to reach many languages, and you want fixes priced by the second.
Glossary entries: Elai.io and Synthesia.
FAQ
Can either export SCORM on a self-serve plan?
No. Elai lists SCORM export on Enterprise only (Elai pricing), and so does Synthesia (sharing article).
Does deleting a rendered Elai video return the minutes?
No. The Free plan article says deleting a rendered project does not restore the minutes used (free plan article).
Can Elai write the speech if my slides have no notes?
Yes, from Creator: in the import settings, Generate speech with AI writes a script from the slides at a length you choose, from 15 seconds up to 300 (PowerPoint guide).
