Granola vs Plaud: The Phone You Carry or a Recorder You Buy

The short answer: if your conversations happen at a laptop or on your phone, Granola needs no hardware: the desktop app covers calls and the free mobile apps cover a meeting across a table, and a Business seat costs $14 a month, on monthly billing only (billing article). If they happen on a show floor, in a workshop room or on a site visit, where a phone on the table is awkward or out of reach, Plaud fits, from $159 for a Plaud Note or NotePin with 300 transcription minutes a month included (device comparison, plan page, both checked on 26 October 2026).

What Plaud changes is the object in your hand. Its recorders start with one press, pin or clip to clothing or attach to the back of a phone, and the Note Pro records for up to 30 hours in one go in Enhance mode (device comparison). The job it wins: the event marketer, the founder at a trade fair, the account lead in a client's meeting room, recording a full day of conversations without touching a laptop.
Granola starts from what you already carry. On a laptop it transcribes the call from your microphone and system audio; on iPhone or Android it listens through the phone's microphone, caches the audio until the transcript is done and then deletes it (mobile transcription). Your typed lines steer the notes it writes. The job it wins is the desk-bound week with the occasional coffee meeting.
Rule of thumb:
- Price the team before the plan. For example, four people on Plaud buy four devices first: 4 x $159 = $636 at the cheapest, before any membership (device comparison). The same four on Granola Business pay 4 x $14 = $56 a month with nothing to ship, and the mobile apps cost nothing on any plan (billing article).
- Test the phone you already own. Run one in-person meeting through Granola's phone app with the phone in the middle of the table. If the transcript holds up, the hardware question is answered for that room; if a Bluetooth headset grabs the microphone, disconnect it first, as Granola's guide advises (mobile transcription).
- Sort last month's conversations by setting. At a screen, on the phone, across a table, walking a floor. If the last two are a small share, a recorder solves a minority of your week.
Which one, conversation by conversation
| Where the conversation happens | Pick | Why, from the vendors' pages |
|---|---|---|
| A video call on your laptop | Granola, or Plaud Desktop if you already own a Plaud | Both capture without a bot; Plaud Desktop needs a bound device and an active membership (Granola guide, binding article) |
| A call someone places to you | Plaud Note or Note Pro | Granola's iPhone app transcribes only calls you place; Plaud's call-capable models record calls (phone calls guide, Plaud Desktop page) |
| A meeting across a table | Either | Granola's phone app listens through the phone's microphone; every Plaud records in person (mobile transcription, device comparison) |
| A full day on a show floor | Plaud | 64 GB on every device and 20 to 50 hours of continuous recording, depending on model and mode (device comparison) |
| A meeting that switches language | Granola, on desktop | Plaud transcribes one language per recording; Granola's desktop app follows a switch (Desktop FAQ, language article) |
| No audio kept afterwards | Granola | Plaud keeps recordings, and its MCP server returns an audio download link (consent page, Plaud MCP) |
The hardware earns its price in the fourth row: a recorder that runs all day without a charger and picks up a room. The Note Pro's four microphones reach up to 16.4 feet against 9.8 feet on the other models (device comparison). Everywhere else, the phone you carry is close enough to start with.
The membership lives on the device
Plaud ties its software to its hardware. Using Plaud Desktop requires an active Starter membership or higher, a Starter membership needs a bound device to activate, and unbinding your last device can cancel Starter after 30 days (binding article). You can create an account without a device, but recording, file transfer and membership benefits start from one (support article). So the bot-free laptop app and the free minutes behind it come with the recorder, and each one is a reason to stay with Plaud's hardware once you own it.
Costs, item by item
US dollar prices, each checked on 26 October 2026:
- Plaud devices: Note Pro $189, NotePin S $179, Note $159, NotePin $159 (device comparison).
- Plaud AI membership: Starter free with any device, 300 minutes a month; Pro $8.33 a month billed annually or $17.99 monthly, 1,200 minutes; Unlimited $20.00 billed annually or $29.99 monthly; Team $20 a user a month billed annually for the first year if bought before the launch offer ends on 30 November 2026, then $25 (plan page). Unused minutes do not carry over.
- Granola: Basic $0 with 30 days of visible history; Business $14 per user, month to month; Enterprise from $35; mobile apps free (billing article).
After a trade show: one agent step
Plaud's MCP server, marked Preview on its plan page, installs with npx -y @plaud-ai/mcp@latest install and gives an assistant list_files with date filters, get_transcript and get_note, which returns the summary and action items (Plaud MCP). At the end of a fair: ask for every recording dated today and one follow-up email per conversation, built from that conversation's action items. You read each draft against its transcript, check the name, the company and anything promised, and only then send. A follow-up that promises the wrong demo date costs more than the one you never sent.
Granola covers the same step inside its own app: on a paid plan with Gmail connected, it drafts a follow-up after an external meeting and waits for you to send it (follow-up emails).
Either way, people in the room should know they are recorded. Plaud's own pages ask you to let others know and get their okay before recording (Plaud); a device on a lanyard is easier to forget than a laptop. For recordings that later feed marketing, the notice duties are set out in the customer calls use case.
Which job each wins
Choose Granola if your job is notes from calls and desk meetings, in one or more languages, with no audio kept and nothing to buy.
Choose Plaud if your job is a day of face-to-face conversations away from a desk, phone calls included, and you want the audio kept for listening back.
FAQ
Can I use Plaud without buying a device?
You can download the app and open an account, but Plaud says recording, file transfer and membership benefits start from a device bound to your account (support article).
What happens when Plaud's monthly minutes run out?
Recording carries on and transcription pauses until the next billing month, or until you buy a one-off top-up of 600, 3,000 or 6,000 minutes (plan page).
Does Granola need a paid plan on the phone?
No. The iOS, Apple Watch and Android apps are free to use, and Basic shows notes from the last 30 days (billing article).
