HeyGen vs ElevenLabs: Lip-Synced Video or the Voice Alone

The short answer: if a speaker's mouth is on screen, use HeyGen, because ElevenLabs states that its dubbing does not lip-sync (ElevenLabs help). If the job is sound, a podcast, a voiceover, an audio ad or a voice agent, use ElevenLabs. Price is not what separates them: 40 minutes of translation fit a plan in the twenties on either side, 240 of the 600 credits in HeyGen Creator at $29 a month (HeyGen pricing), or 120,000 of the 121,000 credits in ElevenLabs Creator at $22 a month (ElevenLabs pricing), both read on 26 October 2026.

Rule of thumb:
- Do the sum on your own minutes. For example, a 10-minute demo into four languages is 40 minutes. HeyGen's Speed engine charges 6 credits a minute, so 40 x 6 = 240 credits (credits article); ElevenLabs charges 3,000 credits a minute for automatic dubbing without a watermark, so 40 x 3,000 = 120,000 (pricing FAQ). Both fit those Creator plans, once a month.
- Look at the source file you have. A talking head filmed face to camera points to HeyGen. A screen recording with narration, a webinar where slides fill the frame, or a podcast has no lips to sync, and ElevenLabs dubs it at the audio level.
- Measure per market. Completion of the translated version against the original, per language. A dub that halves watch time in one market is a script problem before it is a tool problem.
These are two companies that cooperate more than they compete. HeyGen's own speech tools offer ElevenLabs voices beside its own (HeyGen MCP docs), and ElevenLabs documents an integration that gives its voice agents a HeyGen LiveAvatar face (LiveAvatar guide).
Which does which job
| Job | HeyGen | ElevenLabs | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Translate a talking-head video, lips matched | Yes, Speed at 6 credits a minute, Precision at 10 | Dubbing has no lip sync; lip sync exists elsewhere through third-party models | HeyGen credits, ElevenLabs help |
| Dub audio only | 4 credits a minute without lip sync | 2,000 to 10,000 credits a minute by mode | Same two pages, ElevenLabs pricing |
| Text to speech | HeyGen Voice, up to 10 hours on Creator | 1 credit a character on V2 Multilingual | HeyGen pricing, ElevenLabs pricing |
| Presenter video | Avatar III to V, 4 to 48 credits a minute | Avatars on all paid plans, lip-synced talking heads | HeyGen credits, ElevenLabs avatars |
| Phone and chat agents | Not on its plan cards; LiveAvatar is a separate account | ElevenAgents; Creator includes 275 call minutes | ElevenLabs agents pricing, LiveAvatar guide |
| Languages | 175+ languages and dialects, paid tiers | 90+ for speech | HeyGen pricing, ElevenLabs homepage |
Where they differ
Lips, and who sees them
HeyGen's translation clones the speaker's voice and moves the mouth to the new language. ElevenLabs keeps the picture and replaces the sound; for a narrated screen recording that is all you need, and for a CEO speaking to camera it is the difference between a dub and a localised video.
Sound as the product
ElevenLabs runs one shared credit pool across speech, transcription at 330 credits a minute, music at 900 a minute, sound effects and dubbing (pricing FAQ), with Dubbing Studio from the Starter plan for line-by-line control. A team that makes podcasts, audio ads or narrated explainers gets a full audio studio. HeyGen treats voice as part of a video.
Agents that talk back
ElevenAgents runs voice and chat agents over phone, chat, email and WhatsApp (ElevenLabs homepage). For a marketing team, that is an inbound line that answers questions about an event or qualifies a demo request. HeyGen has nothing equivalent on its plan cards, though its LiveAvatar product can give such an agent a face.
Price, plan by plan
On 26 October 2026, ElevenLabs listed Free with 10,000 credits a month, Starter at $6 with 30,000, Creator at $22 with 121,000, Pro at $99 with 600,000 and Scale at $299 with 1.8 million and 3 seats, monthly; yearly billing charges ten months for twelve (ElevenLabs pricing). Unused credits roll over for up to two months on paid plans. HeyGen listed Free, Creator at $29 with 600 credits, Pro from $49 with 1,000, and Business at $149 with 1,500, monthly, and $24, $41 and $119 a month billed yearly (HeyGen pricing).
An agent step, with the test calls first
ElevenLabs runs a hosted MCP server at https://api.elevenlabs.io/v1/mcp: connect it in Claude with OAuth, and the assistant can create, configure and update the agents in your workspace (hosted MCP docs). Ask it to draft a webinar registration agent from your event page: the greeting, the five questions it may answer, and the hand-off when a caller asks something else. The human check: someone on the events team reads the agent's prompt and places three test calls, one of them hostile, before the agent gets a phone number or a website widget. An EU workspace connects to its own residency URL, which the same page lists.
The default to watch
The ElevenLabs plan cards on 26 October 2026 showed Starter at $1 and Creator at $11 for the first month, until 1 November (pricing). A first month at $1 or $11 exists to start a subscription that renews at $6 or $22, so put the renewal price in the budget, not the offer.
Test it free
ElevenLabs dubbing works on the Free plan, watermarked (plans article); at 2,000 credits a minute, the 10,000 free credits cover a 5-minute clip. HeyGen's Free plan includes limited trial access to lip-sync translation on videos up to a minute (HeyGen pricing). Translate the same one-minute clip on both into the language of your second market and send both to a native speaker in that market. Ask them which one they would watch to the end.
Choose HeyGen if
- Your job is localising video where a person speaks to camera.
- You want avatars or a digital twin to present new material.
- One tool should cover scripts, presenters and translation for video.
Choose ElevenLabs if
- Your job is audio: voiceovers, podcasts, audio ads, narration for screen recordings.
- You want a voice agent on a phone line or a website.
- Your team needs fine control over each dubbed line, voice and timing.

FAQ
Can I use ElevenLabs voices inside HeyGen?
Yes, for speech. HeyGen's speech tool lists ElevenLabs as one of its engines, beside HeyGen Voice and Starfish, unless a workspace policy blocks it (HeyGen MCP docs).
Does ElevenLabs make talking-head video at all?
Its Avatars feature, on all paid plans, pairs a persistent face with any voice in your library to produce lip-synced talking heads (avatars docs). Its dubbing product does not move lips.
What happens to a failed ElevenLabs dub?
If a project cannot be prepared, the charge is refunded; if an extra language fails, its charge is refunded. A failed first language keeps its prepaid charge for a retry on the same project (dubbing cost article).
