Pictory vs HeyGen: Cut Your Recordings or Script a Presenter

The short answer: if your material already exists as recordings, webinars, podcasts, sales calls, Pictory fits better: its editor cuts the video when you delete words from the transcript, and Starter, $29 a month on monthly billing, holds 2,000 credits, about 30 minutes of video a month by Pictory's own sizing (Pictory pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). HeyGen fits when nothing has been recorded and someone has to present, or when a recorded speaker has to be heard in another language with the lips matched, on plans from $29 a month (HeyGen pricing).

Three checks first:
- A month of clips, priced. For example, five 60-second clips a week for four weeks is 20 minutes, two thirds of Starter's 30-minute sizing (pricing). Putting those same 20 minutes into one more language on HeyGen's Speed engine is 20 x 6 = 120 of Creator's 600 credits (credits article).
- The recordings you hold. Pictory transcribes uploads, YouTube links and files from a Google Drive you connect (input guide). HeyGen translates MP4, MOV and WEBM uploads of up to 5 GB, or YouTube and Drive links, but stops at 30 minutes per video on Creator and Pro (translation guide).
- A tagged link per clip. Each clip points to the replay or demo page with its own campaign tag, so the sign-ups it brings are counted per clip, not per tool.
They are not rivals for most teams. Pictory edits and assembles: stock from Getty Images and Storyblocks, ElevenLabs voices, captions, a scene editor. HeyGen generates a speaker. Some teams cut the webinar in one and translate the strongest three minutes in the other.
Pick by what you start from
| If your source is... | Pictory | HeyGen |
|---|---|---|
| A recorded webinar or podcast | Transcribes it; delete words to cut, remove filler words with one toggle | AI clipping picks highlights from the dialogue, 20 seconds or longer |
| A blog post or script | URL or script to video over licensed stock | Text to video with an avatar presenting |
| A slide deck | PPT to video | PPT or PDF, one scene per slide, with an avatar |
| A speaker who must reach another market | Translation with AI voices | Lip-synced translation in 175+ languages and dialects |
| Only an idea | The AI video agent drafts the script, scenes and a preview | The Video Agent builds a whole video from a prompt |
| An LMS | SCORM export on Enterprise | SCORM export on Business, $149 a month |

What decides it
Editing a real person versus generating one
Pictory's recorded-video editor shows the transcript beside the preview; deleting words or sentences changes the video, other changes touch only the subtitles (recorded video guide). The speaker is real, the words are theirs, the job is trimming. HeyGen's job begins where there is no footage worth trimming: an avatar reads a script, or a recorded person is re-voiced.
Languages
Pictory narrates with ElevenLabs voices and translates video (pricing). HeyGen keeps the speaker's own voice and re-times the mouth, in more than 175 languages and dialects once you pay (HeyGen pricing). For a founder keynote cut for three markets, only the second keeps the founder recognisable.
What a minute buys
Pictory sells credits sized as video minutes, 30 a month on Starter; its Getty Images and Storyblocks stock and its music cost nothing extra, while AI-generated media draws more of the same credits (pricing, MCP docs). HeyGen sells credits spent by model: 4 a minute for Avatar III on a video look, 31 for Avatar IV, 6 for lip-synced translation (credits article).
The money
Both entry plans cost $29 a month on monthly billing, checked on 26 October 2026: Pictory Starter with 2,000 credits, HeyGen Creator with 600. Billed annually, Pictory Starter is $25 a month and grants all 24,000 credits up front, and Professional falls from $59 to $35 (Pictory pricing); HeyGen Creator is $24 a month and Pro $41 (HeyGen pricing). Teams on Pictory start at 3 users on the Teams plan, $199 a month or $119 billed annually; HeyGen moves teams to Business.
The agent step: clips picked from the dialogue
HeyGen's MCP server gives an assistant such as Claude a create_ai_clipping tool: submit the webinar recording, choose the length bands (30, 60, 180 seconds or long), and the job returns clips with download links. Highlights are chosen from what is said, so a music-only or silent video fails. The human check: the speaker or the product owner watches every clip before it is posted, because a highlight cut from dialogue can lose the sentence that qualified a claim. Pictory reaches the same place by hand, through the transcript, and its own agent can be driven from Claude too; turning a blog post into video that way is the blog-to-video use case.
Where the page steers you
Pictory's pricing page opens on annual billing, with the monthly price struck through and a consultation it values at $210 beside the yearly plans (pricing). The default view is set to sell twelve months; a team that has not yet counted its recordings is better served by one month on monthly billing first.
Start without paying
Pictory's trial starts with 300 credits and asks for no card (homepage). Upload last month's webinar, switch on filler-word removal and cut three clips through the transcript. HeyGen's Free plan covers three short watermarked videos a month (pricing); translate the strongest clip into your second market's language. Post the clips with their tagged links and read replay sign-ups after two weeks.
Choose Pictory if
- Your job is turning recordings you already have into short clips.
- Stock footage, captions and an AI voice carry the message well enough.
- You want to edit video the way you edit a document.
Choose HeyGen if
- Your job needs a presenter and nobody wants to film.
- A recorded speaker has to be heard in other languages with the lips matched.
- Sales or support wants personal avatar messages at volume.

FAQ
Can Pictory put an avatar on screen?
Yes. Stock avatars come with every plan and cloned avatars start on Professional, at $59 a month or $35 billed annually (Pictory pricing).
Can HeyGen cut a long webinar into clips?
Through its API and MCP server, yes: AI clipping produces clips of 20 seconds or more from the spoken dialogue (MCP docs). For translation, the 30-minute ceiling per video on Creator and Pro means splitting a longer recording first (translation guide).
Do removed filler words stay in the subtitles?
No. Pictory removes them from the audio and the subtitles alike, and you can add your own words to the filler list (filler words guide).
