How to Use Speechify to Clear a Backlog of Reports by Ear

The short answer: if ten reports of 30 pages each are waiting for you, the free plan's 1.5x cap is the bottleneck and Premium's 5x ceiling is what you pay for, at $29 for a month or $139 for a year on the web (pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026). Proofreading your own copy by ear needs no upgrade at all. The order: import the files where they already sit, switch on auto-skip, raise the speed step by step, hear a summary before committing to a full listen, keep highlights with notes, share them, and hand the cross-report memo to an agent that a person then checks.

Rule of thumb before you start:
- Price the speed, not the voices. For example, a 30-page report at 1.5x that takes 60 minutes takes 30 minutes at 3x, so ten of them free up 300 minutes, five hours, against $29 for the month (pricing page). If the pile is two reports, stay free.
- Use the folders you already keep. Speechify connects to Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive, so the competitor folder does not have to move (import guide).
- Decide what done looks like. Not hours listened: the number of reports that reached a decision, kept, discarded or summarised for the team, per week.
The product, its plans and its store prices are covered in the Speechify glossary entry.
What you need
- A Speechify account created from the Chrome extension or the web app. After sign-up the dashboard offers the free trial; closing that box keeps you on the free plan (sign-up article).
- The reading list, in one folder, with anything under NDA set apart.
- Ten minutes to set defaults before the first listen, because skip and speed settings decide whether listening beats reading.
The routine
1. Import, and encrypt what is confidential
In the web app click + Add, then Upload File, Paste Link or Type or Paste Text, or connect Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive (import guide). Links behind a password or paywall may not import.
Decide on encryption at this moment. A file encrypted at upload is readable only with your separate encryption password, but encryption cannot be added to a file already in the library, cannot be used on link imports, and switches off AI features and sharing for that file (encryption article). A partner's pricing deck under NDA: encrypt and listen. A public analyst report: leave it open so you can summarise it.
2. Cut what the ear should not hear
Open the file, then Settings, Auto Skip content, and skip headers, footers, footnotes, tables, formulas, citations, URLs and brackets (skip article). Try AI Enhanced mode on PDFs with messy layouts and Classic on clean ones. A report read with every page number and footnote marker is the fastest way to give up on listening.
3. Raise the speed slowly
Click the speed icon on the control bar and set it, or switch on Increase Speed Automatically, which raises it as you listen (speed article). Most of the time saved in the arithmetic above comes from this one setting, so give it a week.
4. Hear the summary first
In the Chrome extension, open Settings, then Assistant, and set Summary Mode to Paragraph or Bullet Point (summary mode) and Summary Depth to Essentials, Balanced or Deep Dive (summary depth). Use Essentials as a triage pass: a report whose summary changes nothing in your plan goes to the archive unheard.
5. Mark what matters as you go
In the web app, highlight a passage, choose Add a Note, and type what it means for you: "their pricing page now bundles onboarding", "contradicts the win-loss notes" (notes article). Open Highlights & Notes, and the three-dot menu on each one copies it to your clipboard for Slack or a doc (sharing article).
6. Proofread your own drafts aloud
Open the Google Doc, press play in the pill player, or start from a paragraph with the play icon beside it (Google Docs article). A sentence that trips the voice usually trips the reader. This step works on the free plan.
7. Take it offline
From the arrow beside a file name, choose Download, then the whole document or selected pages and a voice (MP3 article). Celebrity voices cannot be downloaded and default to John.
8. Delegate the comparison, then check it
Speechify Work is the vendor's agent product: you describe a task, and its agents research topics, analyse several documents and produce memos (Speechify Work). Give it the three competitor reports you highlighted most and ask for a one-page memo on how each prices and positions. The human check: whoever owns competitive intelligence reads the memo beside the highlights from step 5 and confirms every claim against its source before it reaches the sales channel.
Two facts first. Speechify Work runs on Speechify Max with 2,500 credits a month that do not roll over, and a task's cost is known only after it runs (Work FAQ). Max's price was not on the pricing page when read on 26 October 2026, so ask before you plan around it.
What the help centre warns about
- The store you subscribe through is where you cancel. Apple and Google Play subscriptions are cancelled there; web subscriptions on the web, by card or PayPal (cancellation article).
- Trials end in a charge unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end, per the same article, and cancelling Premium later stops only the renewal.
- Encryption is a one-way door at upload. It cannot be added afterwards (encryption article).
Try the free plan on one week of drafts
Before any trial, run step 6 for a week on the free plan: every landing page, email and post you write, read back to you before it ships. It costs nothing and on its own catches the clumsy sentence and the missing word. Upgrade only if the report pile, not the drafts, is the problem.
The trial is offered on the first screen after sign-up, and it renews into Premium unless you cancel a full day before it ends. The same Premium costs $99.99 a year through Google Play, $139 on the web and $139.99 through Apple, according to the cost article, so the button you tap first decides the price as well as the cancellation route.
FAQ
Is listening at 3x realistic for dense reports?
Speechify lets you set it by hand or let the app raise it gradually (speed article). Start below 2x on dense material and let the automatic increase do the rest.
Can I share a whole report's notes with my team?
Each highlight or note copies to the clipboard from the Highlights & Notes list (sharing article). Encrypted files cannot be shared.
Does the free plan read Google Docs?
Yes, through the Chrome extension's pill player (Google Docs article), at up to 1.5x with 10 voices (pricing page).
