How to Use Unbounce to Route Paid Traffic With Smart Traffic

The short answer: if one paid campaign sends several kinds of visitor to the same page, Smart Traffic is the Unbounce feature for the job, and it needs the Optimize plan at $249 a month with 50,000 visitors, per the pricing page: set one conversion goal, build two or three variants that differ in angle, switch the Page Traffic Mode to Smart Traffic, add the variants to the test, republish, and leave the page alone until the Learning Phase ends.

The job: a single landing page takes clicks from search, from social and from a newsletter, and the visitors want different things. An A/B test picks one winner for all of them. Smart Traffic instead sends each visitor to the variant most likely to convert someone like them. For the plans and what each includes, see the Unbounce glossary entry.
What to settle before you switch it on:
- Fit the campaign inside the allowance. Optimize includes 50,000 visitors a month on the pricing page, and the limits article charges $80 per extra 10,000, rounded up. Its own example: 85,000 visitors on Optimize costs a one-time $320.
- Start from a test you have already run. If an Experiment-plan A/B test left you with two strong variants, those are your first Smart Traffic set. No history yet? Write variants that differ in the promise, not the button colour.
- Plan the check outside Unbounce. Smart Traffic reports a lift percentage. Before launch, note the leads per week your CRM receives from this page, so you can compare the same count afterwards.
What you need
- The Optimize plan or higher. $249 billed monthly or $187 billed yearly, checked on 26 October 2026 on the pricing page.
- A page with paid traffic and an existing conversion, usually a form.
- Two or more variants, or the hour it takes to build them.
Step 1: Set one conversion goal
In the Classic Builder, open the Goals tab and tick the element that counts, usually the form. If you tick several, the conversion goals guide says they all add up to one total, because separate reporting does not exist yet, so Smart Traffic would be learning toward a blend. Pages in the Smart Builder set goals in their own panel.
Step 2: Build the variants
In the Page Overview, scroll down and click Create New Variant. New variants start inactive, per the setup guide. Edit each one around a different angle: one for the visitor comparing prices, one for the visitor who needs proof, one for the visitor who wants speed.
Step 3: Let an assistant draft a variant, and review it before it runs
The Unbounce MCP server connects Claude or ChatGPT to your account on every plan. According to its product page, an assistant can build a page from a copy doc, create variants, allocate traffic and turn on Smart Traffic. One limit decides how you use it: it reads and edits only pages it created or converted into its own format, not pages built in the Unbounce builder.
So for an MCP-created page, give the assistant the angle and the facts, and ask for a new variant without publishing. A person then opens the preview and checks every claim, number and promise against the offer before the variant joins the test. For a builder page, use the assistant to draft the copy and paste it in yourself.
Step 4: Switch the page to Smart Traffic
On the page, scroll to the Page Traffic Mode section and select Smart Traffic, per the setup guide.
Step 5: Add the variants to the test
Click the three dots beside each inactive variant and choose Add to active variants. Hover over a name and use the pen icon to rename it after its angle, so the report reads like a sentence.
Step 6: Republish and wait
Publish or Republish the page. Smart Traffic enters the Learning Phase, analysing visitors until the page passes 30, after which it starts routing, per the setup guide. The older Smart Traffic FAQ gives 50 visitors, plus 30 per variant added later.
Then leave it. Adding a variant, editing one or republishing sends Smart Traffic back to the Learning Phase. The getting started guide says the same: avoid editing or deleting variants during this time.
Step 7: Read the lift, then prune
Once routing starts, a lift percentage appears above the conversion rates. After at least 100 visitors in 28 days, Unbounce can suggest a Deactivate Variant Insight for a variant that serves nobody; deactivate it from the dropdown and republish, which the setup guide says does not restart learning. Leave low performers running otherwise: the FAQ notes a weak variant can still be the right page for a small group of visitors.
Step 8: Watch the allowance
Unbounce emails you at 85% and 100% of the plan's traffic, per the limits article. Upgrading before the cycle ends avoids the one-time overage fee.
What Unbounce's own documentation warns about
- Editing during the Learning Phase. Every change restarts it.
- Resetting stats to reset learning. It does not work; the FAQ says to duplicate the page with its variants and republish.
- WordPress caching. Whole-page caching with cookies interferes with Smart Traffic on a WordPress domain.
- Popups and sticky bars. Smart Traffic runs only on regular pages.
- Several pages as one funnel. Smart Traffic treats each URL on its own.
The lift figure comes from Unbounce's model of its own effect, estimated against a random split that never ran, so read it as the vendor's claim and count leads in your CRM for the same weeks.
That comparison is a manual check, and enough on its own: leads per week before, leads per week after, same page, same budget. Later, if you want that check run continuously across channels, a causal attribution tool like Causality Engine does it. Disclosure: I founded it.
FAQ
Does Smart Traffic collect personal data?
No. The Smart Traffic FAQ says it learns from attributes such as browser, country or region, time zone and operating system, and collects no personally identifiable information.
How do I restart Smart Traffic from scratch?
Duplicate the page with all its variants and republish the copy. Resetting page stats leaves Smart Traffic as it was, per the FAQ.
Can I switch Smart Traffic on from Claude?
Yes, for pages the MCP server can edit. The MCP product page lists turning on Smart Traffic among its actions, on the Optimize plan and higher.
