Make vs Zapier: Credits per Module or Tasks per Action

The short answer: if your team builds many short automations across a long tail of apps, Zapier is the safer default: it connects 9,000+ apps, charges a task only when an action succeeds, and its Professional plan starts at $29.99 a month billed monthly, checked on 26 October 2026 on Zapier's pricing page. If a single flow branches, loops over line items and reshapes data at every step, Make's canvas shows the whole thing at once, and its Free plan gives 1,000 credits a month to test that (Make pricing).

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

What Zapier changes is what counts. Triggers, polling and its own Filter, Formatter, Paths and Delay steps use no tasks, per its pricing FAQ. Make counts every module that processes a bundle, the trigger included (operations guide).

What decides it:

  1. Count one month of a real flow. For example, a trigger, a filter and two actions run 500 times is 2 x 500 = 1,000 tasks on Zapier, because the trigger and filter are free (pricing FAQ). On Make the same shape is a trigger and two modules, so 3 x 500 = 1,500 credits (credits). AI steps, code and some connectors can use more than one task on Zapier, so count those separately.
  2. List the apps you already use. Zapier connects 9,000+ apps and Make 3,000+ native apps, per their pricing pages (Zapier, Make). An app missing from one directory settles the question before price does.
  3. Count the builders. Zapier's Free and Professional plans are for one user; Team includes 25 and Enterprise unlimited (pricing FAQ).
  4. Decide how you will know it works. Zapier emails you as the task limit nears and again when it is reached (pricing FAQ). Make prints operations and credits for each module after every run (operations guide).

What separates them

Which steps you pay for

Zapier lists Filter, Formatter, Paths, Delay, Looping, Sub-Zap, Digest and Storage among the steps that do not count as tasks (pricing FAQ). Make bills each module run, and a module that handles ten bundles is ten operations (operations guide). A flow heavy on logic and light on actions costs less on Zapier's meter; a flow heavy on actions narrows the gap.

What happens at the limit

On Zapier, hitting the plan's task limit switches the account to pay-per-task billing, at a higher rate per task, unless that is turned off, in which case Zaps pause until the next period (pricing FAQ). On Make, scenarios stop until credits are added, and incoming webhooks wait in a queue (Make pricing).

How a complex flow reads

Make builds flows as a map, with routers that split a scenario into routes and filters between modules (router guide). Zapier builds a sequence of steps, with Paths for branching (pricing page). My view: ten branches are easier to audit on a map than as nested paths in a list, and three steps are easier in a list than on any map.

An AI draft with a human gate, on Zapier

The job: a partner enquiry arrives through a form. An AI by Zapier step drafts the reply, listed among Zapier's AI products on the pricing page. Then a Human in the Loop step with the Request Approval action pauses the Zap and asks a reviewer to approve or change the draft before the send step runs (Human in the Loop). That action is not on the Free plan. Make documents the same idea differently: its outreach agent saves a Gmail draft and posts it to Slack, so the person sends it by hand (outreach agent).

The prices

Zapier, checked on 26 October 2026 on its pricing page, in USD a month at the entry task tier; higher tiers cost more:

PlanBilled monthlyBilled yearlyUsers
Free$0$01
ProfessionalFrom $29.99From $19.991
TeamFrom $103.50From $6925
EnterpriseContact salesContact salesUnlimited

Make's plan prices sit behind a security check that stops its price widget, and they could not be read from the pricing page on 26 October 2026. The page text confirms the Free plan's 1,000 credits, extra credits sold in bundles of 1,000 or 10,000, and a lower price for annual prepayment.

Zapier's default at the limit is to keep running and bill each extra task above the subscription rate, as its pricing FAQ sets out. So the month a loop runs away is the month you pay the dearer rate, unless someone switched pay-per-task off first. That suits the vendor and, most days, the workflow too. Decide in advance which Zaps should pause instead, and switch pay-per-task off if a runaway loop would cost more than a late lead.

Test on the free plans

A new Zapier account starts a 14-day Professional trial with no card (pricing FAQ), and Make's Free plan carries 1,000 credits a month (Make pricing). Build your busiest flow on both, run a week of real data, and compare Zapier's task count with Make's credit count. Then price each count against the plans your own browser shows; the meter that suits your flow shows up in that week, not in a feature table.

Choose Make if your job is

  • Building branching, looping flows that someone needs to read at a glance.
  • Running an agent that uses existing scenarios as its tools.

Choose Zapier if your job is

  • Connecting apps that only Zapier's larger directory carries.
  • Running many simple automations where filters and formatting are most of the logic.
  • Putting a reviewer between an AI draft and the customer, with a built-in approval step.

FAQ

Does polling use Zapier tasks?

No. Zapier never charges a task to check for new data, only when an action completes (pricing FAQ).

Is Make cheaper than Zapier?

The vendors' pages cannot settle it today, because Make's prices were not readable on 26 October 2026. Compare a week of Make credits with a week of Zapier tasks for the same flow.

Can Make and Zapier both act as tools for an AI assistant?

Yes. Make's MCP server lets clients such as Claude run on-demand scenarios (Make MCP server); Zapier MCP is available to all accounts, at two tasks per tool call (pricing FAQ).
