The short answer: if you can commit three years to a few WordPress sites, Bluehost is the smaller bill by a wide margin: three years of Starter cost $143.64 in a single payment, $3.99 a month, for up to 10 sites, renewing at $9.99 a month. SiteGround asks for one prepaid year, $35.88 on StartUp for one site or $59.88 on GrowBig for unlimited sites, then $17.99 or $29.99 a month (USD before tax, checked on 26 October 2026 on the Bluehost pricing page and SiteGround's WordPress hosting page). What SiteGround charges the difference for is daily backups, email that is part of the plan and an agent that edits WordPress. Choose Bluehost if your job is getting several small WordPress sites online for the lowest three-year sum, with staging even on the entry plan. Choose SiteGround if your job is sites whose content changes daily, where losing a week of edits costs more than the hosting.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Both are shared WordPress hosts with a discounted first term. They discount different lengths of commitment. SiteGround prices a single prepaid year and renews StartUp $15 a month higher. Bluehost prints a three-year price, a renewal $6 a month above it, and leaves its shorter term out of view (SiteGround, Bluehost).

The checks, cheapest first:

  1. Three years at each card's printed renewal. For example, SiteGround StartUp comes to $35.88 + 24 x $17.99 = $467.64 and GrowBig to 12 x $4.99 + 24 x $29.99 = $779.64, while Bluehost Starter is 36 x $3.99 = $143.64 and Business is 36 x $6.99 = $251.64, from the SiteGround and Bluehost cards. Three years of GrowBig cost more than five back-to-back Starter terms at the introductory rate would.
  2. The sites, mailboxes and backups you run now. Bluehost Starter holds 10 websites in 10GB of NVMe storage, sized for about 40k visits a month, with weekly backups; SiteGround StartUp holds one website, GrowBig unlimited, both backed up daily (Bluehost WordPress hosting, SiteGround). Count your mailboxes too: SiteGround includes email, and Bluehost's plans carry a Pro Email trial.
  3. A restore you have timed. Inside each host's 30-day refund window, restore one backup into staging and time how long until the site works again. A backup you have never restored is a hope, not a plan.

Read on 26 October 2026 on the SiteGround WordPress hosting page, the Bluehost pricing page and the Bluehost WordPress hosting page. Bluehost's 12-month figures sit behind a toggle that could not be read that day; a Buy More, Save More offer running to 30 November 2026 takes 15% off one eligible product, 20% off two and 25% off three or more, on a first 12-month term only.

What separates them

How much work a backup can lose

Bluehost's WordPress plans list weekly website backups; SiteGround's list free daily backups stored away from the server, with on-demand copies from GrowBig (Bluehost, SiteGround). For a brochure site edited once a month, weekly is enough. For a shop or a site with daily posts, the gap between two backups is the work you redo.

Staging on the entry plan

Here Bluehost is the more generous: Starter includes a staging site (WordPress hosting page), while SiteGround keeps staging for GrowBig and GoGeek (plan cards). A team that tests plugin updates before they reach the live site gets that on Bluehost for $3.99 a month and on SiteGround from $4.99, renewing at $29.99, per the two cards above.

Mail, and the rest of the account

SiteGround's plans carry email on your own domain with no account limit (web hosting page) and a monthly 20,000-token allowance for its AI agent (AI agent page). Bluehost adds Yoast SEO, a WordPress AI Builder that turns a few answers into three previews to pick from, and a Pro Email trial that renews at $2.99 a month (WordPress hosting page). One bundles running the site. The other bundles starting it.

Alt text for the whole media library, with a person reading it

SiteGround's agent works on WordPress sites at any host once its plugin is connected, so this job runs on a Bluehost site as well. Its media tutorial covers bulk metadata on hundreds of images, with a preview step before changes apply.

  1. Ask the agent for every image in the media library with empty alt text, grouped by the page or product it appears on, and tell it to change nothing yet.
  2. Ask it to draft alt text under 125 characters for the first 20, describing what each image shows, and to return the list for review rather than apply it.
  3. The human check: a person who sells these products fixes product names, models and colours, marks decorative images to stay empty, and only then lets the agent apply the batch. The tutorial lists what the agent cannot reach: images that page builders store outside the media library, and libraries offloaded to Amazon S3 or Cloudflare R2.

Free before paid, and the term the card leads with

The arithmetic above costs nothing. So does the agent trial: AI Studio gives 14 days and 20,000 tokens on a site hosted anywhere (AI agent page). Bluehost's pages list no trial; its test is the 30-day refund, less whatever a free domain normally costs (pricing page).

Then look at which number Bluehost shows you. Its plan cards are priced on the 36-month term, and the 12-month figures sit behind a toggle that did not load on 26 October 2026, so the $3.99 that wins the comparison is the price of handing Bluehost $143.64 for three years on the first day. If three years is longer than you can plan a site for, ask for the 12-month price at checkout before you compare it with SiteGround's year.

Pick SiteGround if

  • Content or orders change daily and a lost week of edits would hurt.
  • Mailboxes should come with hosting rather than as a trial that renews.
  • An agent should handle updates, media and SEO fields by chat.

Pick Bluehost if

  • Up to 10 WordPress sites need to be online for three years at the lowest total.
  • Staging belongs on the entry plan.
  • The sites are edited rarely enough that weekly backups cover them.

More on each: the SiteGround entry, the Bluehost entry and how to use Bluehost, a walk-through of its self-service migration. Bluehost vs Hostinger sets Bluehost's three-year term against a four-year one.

FAQ

Which costs less over three years?

Bluehost. Starter totals $143.64 over 36 months; SiteGround StartUp totals $467.64 over the same 36 months at its printed renewal, both read on 26 October 2026 on the Bluehost and SiteGround pages.

Does Bluehost include email?

Not as part of the plan: each WordPress plan starts a one-month Pro Email trial, which then bills $2.99 a month unless cancelled, and Google Workspace is sold alongside (WordPress hosting page). SiteGround includes email on every plan.

Can I buy Bluehost for one year?

The pricing page shows a 12 Months option beside 36 Months, but its 12-month prices could not be read on 26 October 2026. Ask for the figure, and the renewal that follows it, before you pay.
