beehiiv vs Mailchimp: When the Newsletter Is the Product

The short answer: if the newsletter is what you sell, or what earns you attention, beehiiv fits better: nobody pays until the list passes 2,500 subscribers, sends are never rationed, paid subscriptions start on Lite with a 0% take rate, and from 25,000 subscribers its Lite plan costs less than Mailchimp Standard, $199 against $310 a month on monthly billing (beehiiv pricing, Mailchimp pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If email exists to sell products from a store, Mailchimp is the better fit and the cheaper one below 10,000 contacts.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

beehiiv is a publishing platform that sends email: each of its plans comes with a website, podcast hosting, a community space and digital products alongside the newsletter. Mailchimp is a marketing platform that publishes the odd newsletter: it prices on contacts, rations sends against them, and puts its depth into store data and automation flows. Where your money comes from settles most of this.

Questions that settle it:

  1. How often you send. For example, a daily edition to 10,000 subscribers is 10,000 x 30 = 300,000 emails a month, while Mailchimp Standard allows 10,000 x 12 = 120,000 at that tier (Mailchimp pricing). beehiiv lists unlimited sends on every plan, Free included (beehiiv pricing). A weekly sender never meets this limit; a daily one meets it in the second week.
  2. What your list is today. Under 2,500 subscribers, beehiiv costs nothing; Mailchimp's free plan stops at 250 contacts and counts unsubscribed contacts in that total (plans article).
  3. Whether readers will pay. beehiiv's Lite plan adds paid subscriptions with a 0% take rate on its pricing page. Mailchimp's plan table lists no paid subscription feature.
  4. Where you will see growth. Decide on new subscribers per week by source. beehiiv's free plan keeps 30 days of analytics and Lite 12 months, so on Free, export the numbers each month (beehiiv pricing).

Three differences that decide it

Paying for readers, or paying for sends

On beehiiv the price moves only when the list grows. On Mailchimp it moves when the list grows or when you send more than your plan's multiple, and overage applies past either limit, per its pricing page. A publication that wants to add a second weekly edition can do it on beehiiv without touching the bill.

Money that comes from the list itself

beehiiv's Lite plan adds paid subscriptions, ad monetization and automations; Pro adds webinars, webhooks and removal of beehiiv branding (pricing). Mailchimp's revenue tools point the other way, at a store: abandoned cart flows, product recommendations and order data through its store connections. One helps the newsletter earn; the other helps the newsletter sell something else.

How much the two charge at your size

Below 10,000 subscribers Mailchimp is cheaper on every paid tier. At 10,000 they almost meet, $139 for beehiiv Lite and $135 for Mailchimp Standard. From 25,000 up, beehiiv Lite is the cheaper one, and at 100,000 Mailchimp's Standard costs $800 against $469 for beehiiv Lite, all on monthly billing (beehiiv pricing, Mailchimp pricing).

What each costs as the list grows

Monthly billing in USD, checked on 26 October 2026 on the beehiiv pricing page and the Mailchimp pricing page. beehiiv's yearly billing brings Lite to $49 a month at 1,000 subscribers and $119 at 10,000.

Test it at no cost first

Pull last quarter's campaign report from your current tool and divide emails sent by subscribers: that one figure tells you whether send caps matter to you. Then open beehiiv Free, import up to 2,500 subscribers and send two issues; the free plan includes the recommendation network, landing pages and the API (beehiiv pricing). Only pay once a feature on Lite, such as paid subscriptions or automations, has a job waiting for it.

The growth tools beehiiv gives away on Free feed the number its prices are set on. That is a fair trade, and still a trade: decide what a subscriber is worth to you before a tier decides it for you.

A draft from the agent, published by a person

Through the beehiiv MCP, an AI client such as Claude, Cursor or Codex can read posts, subscribers, metrics, automations and polls, and on paid plans create and edit content (beehiiv MCP guide). One step of a weekly routine: the agent reads the open and click data from your last eight issues, picks the three topics readers clicked most and drafts the next issue around them. The guide says drafts made through the MCP must be published from the beehiiv app, and automations built through it must be activated there. So the editor reads the draft, checks every claim and link, and presses publish.

Choose beehiiv if the newsletter earns the money

  • You send several times a week and do not want sends rationed.
  • Readers pay for issues, or sponsors pay to reach them.
  • Your list is under 2,500 today, or above 25,000, where the pricing page puts Lite below Mailchimp Standard.

Choose Mailchimp if the newsletter sells something else

  • Orders, carts and products from a store drive your emails.
  • Your list is between 250 and 10,000 contacts and price is the deciding row, per the Mailchimp pricing page.
  • Five people need to work in the account on a mid-tier plan.

FAQ

Is beehiiv free?

Up to 2,500 subscribers, with unlimited sends, 1 team seat, 1 publication and 30 days of analytics, per its pricing page. Paid plans start with a trial and no credit card.

Does Mailchimp limit how often I can send?

Yes. Essentials allows 10 times your contact limit in sends a month, Standard 12 times and Premium 15 times, and going over brings overage charges (Mailchimp pricing).

Can an AI assistant publish to beehiiv for me?

No. Through the beehiiv MCP it can create and edit drafts on a paid plan, but publishing and scheduling happen in the app, and free plans have read-only access.
