The short answer: if your chats start from Meta ads and Instagram comments and end in a booking or a payment link, Chatfuel is built for that conversation: its Business plan is $20 a month on monthly billing, with $20 of credits in the wallet, every Meta channel plus TikTok and website chat, and unlimited teammates (Chatfuel pricing, plans article). If they start on your help centre and end in a refund or an account change, Botpress is built for that one, and its Plus plan costs $189 a month on monthly billing, or $150 billed annually, for 250 conversations (Botpress pricing). Both checked on 26 October 2026.

Before you build either:
- Price a busy month. For example, 600 conversations on Botpress Plus is 250 included plus four packs of 100 at $65, so $189 + 4 x $65 = $449 a month on monthly billing (Botpress pricing). Chatfuel's $20 does not move with volume; the wallet does, drawing for each AI reply, each template and each WhatsApp message Meta bills, and the plans article prints no price per AI reply (plans article). Run a real week before you budget it.
- Sort last month's chats by where they started. Ads, comments and DMs on Meta channels point to Chatfuel. A help widget, an order question or a ticket queue points to Botpress, which connects WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger through integrations but calls itself a customer support platform (Botpress homepage).
- Pick the measure that matches the job. For sales chats, cost per qualified lead, as How to use Chatfuel sets out. For support, the share of tickets the agent resolved on its own, checked by reading a weekly sample.

What separates them
Who the agent works for
Chatfuel's homepage describes an agent that replies, qualifies, books and follows up on WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, and answers a "price?" comment publicly and in a DM (Chatfuel homepage). Botpress describes an AI-native support platform whose agents take action on refunds, account updates and multi-step workflows (Botpress homepage). Its studio is a builder: every bot starts with an Autonomous Node in its main workflow that uses a language model to decide which tools to call, and the docs say it can take actions without human intervention (Autonomous Node). One is shaped around a sale, the other around a ticket.
What the meter counts
Botpress bills per conversation, meaning any exchange in which the user sends two or more messages during the billing month; a thread that crosses the month end is billed in both months, and the count is the same whether the AI or a person handled it (Botpress pricing). Chatfuel's subscription never changes with traffic; its wallet does, and credits do not carry over to the next month (plans article). Landbot vs Botpress covers what Botpress's packs do when a month runs over.
Who pays Meta for WhatsApp
Chatfuel is a WhatsApp Business Solution Provider: it pays Meta for you and takes the fees from the same wallet as your credits, so there is one bill (Chatfuel pricing). Botpress's WhatsApp integration asks you to create or select your own WhatsApp Business Account and Facebook business page, then Meta verifies the business (WhatsApp setup); its pricing page lists no WhatsApp message fee of its own. Meta's EUR card charges €0.1323 per marketing message and €0.0414 per utility or service message to a Dutch number, with the first 1,000 service messages per number free each month (Meta pricing).
One AI step: the agent sends the deposit link, a manager confirms
In Chatfuel, payment behaviour is an instruction, not a flow. Open Fuely AI, Automations, the automation for the channel where customers pay, and under Additional instructions write: "After the customer picks a service and a preferred time, ask them to pay the deposit using this link, then connect them with a manager to finalize the booking." Paste your Stripe, PayPal or Square link in place of the placeholder (payment link guide). Test it in the Test chat before going live.
The guide is clear that the AI only shares the link and cannot process a payment. That makes the manager the check: they open the handed-over chat, confirm in the payment tool that the deposit arrived, and only then confirm the booking to the customer. For agents that act on a refund themselves, Botpress is the tool built for it, and a refund over your own threshold is the place to put a person.
Start on the free routes
Botpress's Free plan runs 100 conversations a month with three seats and three agents, and when the 100 are used it simply stops, with no top-ups (Botpress pricing). Chatfuel offers a 7-day trial with $15 of credits (plans article). Feed each one the twenty questions your inbox saw most last month and mark which answers a customer could act on with no human in the loop.
Then look at the comparison each vendor hands you. Botpress's homepage calculator opens at 4 seats and 1,200 conversations a month and shows Botpress at $9,000 a year against $29,520 for Zendesk and $18,336 for Intercom (Botpress homepage). Four seats is one more than Plus includes, so the preset lands on the Team plan, $750 a month billed annually, at a support desk's volume, where seat-free pricing wins; a two-person team selling over WhatsApp is not the reader that default was drawn for.
Choose Chatfuel if your job is
- Turning ad clicks, comments and DMs on Meta channels into bookings and payments.
- Giving the whole team the inbox without paying per seat.
- Paying Meta's WhatsApp fees through one wallet with one bill.
Choose Botpress if your job is
- Resolving support questions end to end, including refunds and account changes.
- Building agents in a studio with tools, workflows and a knowledge base.
- Paying per conversation with AI usage included, on web chat first.

FAQ
Can Botpress answer on WhatsApp?
Yes, through its official WhatsApp integration: install it from the Hub in Botpress Studio, authorize WhatsApp, and create or select a Facebook business page and a WhatsApp Business Account, after which Meta verifies the business (WhatsApp setup).
Does Chatfuel charge per seat?
No. Every plan includes unlimited teammates, every channel and unlimited contacts; what you pay for beyond the plan is usage from the wallet (plans article).
Which costs less at 1,000 conversations a month?
On Botpress, Plus with 250 included needs eight packs: $189 + 8 x $65 = $709, against Team at $939 with 1,500 included, both on monthly billing (Botpress pricing). On Chatfuel the plan stays $20 and the cost sits in the wallet, so the answer depends on how many AI replies and templates those conversations use.
