The short answer: consider Hello Bar if you run a blog or a small shop, want a top bar and a leaving-visitor modal live this week, and already pay for an email tool: its help centre shows exit intent as an ordinary display setting in the editor (exit intent article). Consider OptinMonster if the job needs rules stacked on rules, such as referrer, cookie or schedule targeting, and you accept that those rules and Exit-Intent arrive with Pro, $444 for the first year and $870 a year after (pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026). Hello Bar's own pricing page could not be read on 26 October 2026, so its figures below come from its help centre, with the date each article carries.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Both sell a strip across the top and a modal for the visitor heading for the tab bar. What separates them is the unit you pay for and how much of the rule book each plan opens.

Three sums before either sign-up:

  1. Convert your pageviews into each vendor's meter. OptinMonster bills campaign impressions and recommends a plan with 20 to 30% more impressions than your pageviews (pricing FAQ). For example, 18,000 pageviews a month x 1.2 = 21,600 and x 1.3 = 23,400, which lands on Pro's 25,000 rather than Plus's 10,000. Hello Bar bills popup views, with 50,000 a month on Growth in its plan article, so a bar on every one of those pages uses 18,000 of them.
  2. Start from the email platform you are keeping. OptinMonster's Basic plan lists Mailchimp, MailerLite, Omnisend and Constant Contact among its integrations, while Klaviyo, HubSpot, Zapier and webhooks sit with Pro (monthly pricing). Hello Bar's Zapier connection offers only contact lists that are not yet attached to a provider (Zapier guide), so plan one list per destination.
  3. Write down today's signup rate. Signups per 1,000 sessions over the last four full weeks, taken from your email platform and GA4. Both dashboards will report their own conversions; only the baseline tells you whether the list grew faster.

Where the two part ways

Exit intent: a setting on one, a tier on the other

OptinMonster opens its rule book by plan: time, scroll, URL and page-count rules everywhere, device and inactivity from Plus, Exit-Intent with referral, cookie and scheduling rules from Pro, geolocation on Growth (display rules guide). Hello Bar's article shows exit intent as one choice in the editor's settings tab and names no plan. If a leaving-visitor modal is the whole plan, ask whether the rest of Pro's list earns its price.

Who declares the winner

Hello Bar decides as it goes: once each version has 1,000 views, 90% of views go to the better converter and 10% to a random one, so an edited loser can win traffic back (A/B article). OptinMonster assigns a campaign at random on every pageview and tells you to choose the one with the highest conversion rate (split test guide). The first suits a solo marketer who will never open the report; the second, a team that wants to say when a test ends.

The free test comes first

Before paying either, put your email platform's own embedded form under the three posts that bring the most sessions, leave it four weeks, and compare signups per 1,000 sessions with the baseline. If an inline form moves the number, a bar and an exit modal are worth a trial: Hello Bar's free views cost nothing, and OptinMonster's 14-day refund window has a deadline (pricing page).

Prices, and the page that would not load

Requests to Hello Bar's pricing page were refused or timed out on 26 October 2026, so today's price could not be read there. Its help centre's plan article, last modified in August 2023, lists Growth from $29 a month or $289 a year, Premium from $49 or $499, and Elite from $99 or $999. Overage is billed the next month: $5 per 5,000 views past Growth's 50,000 in the overage article of September 2024, $5 per 25,000 in the older one. Treat all of it as dated and get the current figure in writing.

OptinMonster figures are USD from the annual and monthly pricing pages; the first-year prices are introductory and renew at full price.

One step an agent can take

On Pro and above, OptinMonster's Zapier trigger sends each new lead with the address, the referring page, the campaign title and a privacyConsent flag when the form carries the privacy checkbox (Zapier doc). Add an AI by Zapier step that reads the referrer and returns one topic tag from a list you supply, then a step that writes the tag to the subscriber in your email platform (AI by Zapier guide). Zapier's guide says the AI step cannot open URLs, so it is classifying the address text, not reading the page, and that Premium is the default model tier at 5 tasks a run, where Standard costs 1.

The human check: for two weeks the Zap writes tags to a sheet instead, and a person compares fifty of them with the pages before any tag decides which email someone gets. Hello Bar documents no AI step.

The default worth watching

OptinMonster's promise never to switch campaigns off past the limit is also the mechanism that moves an account into the tier above without anyone choosing it: the pricing FAQ says the upgrade happens automatically where a higher tier exists. A good month raises the bill on its own, so put a check on the impression count in the third week of every month.

Choose Hello Bar if

  • Your job is a sitewide announcement bar plus one exit modal on a content site, set up by one person in an afternoon.
  • You would rather the test keep sending traffic to the leader than wait for someone to call it.
  • You want to try it on real traffic first: Starter costs nothing until its 5,000 views are spent (plan article).

Choose OptinMonster if

  • Your job is targeting by where visitors came from, which cookie they carry or what day it is, which is Pro's rule set (display rules guide).
  • You run more than one site: plans cover 1, 2, 3 or 5 (pricing page).
  • Leads must reach Klaviyo, HubSpot or a webhook without glue, which the Pro tier lists (monthly pricing).

FAQ

Is Hello Bar's free plan a monthly allowance?

No. The plan article describes Starter's 5,000 views as non-renewing and in total, with Hello Bar branding on the popups (plan article).

Which OptinMonster plans include Exit-Intent?

Pro and Growth (display rules guide). On Basic or Plus the nearest substitute is a scroll-depth or time rule.

Can I use both on one site?

You can, but two exit modals compete for the same visitor and both dashboards claim the signup. Give each placement one tool and judge it against your email platform's baseline.
