How to Use Colossyan to Turn a Policy PDF Into Training

The short answer: set up a brand kit, give Cora the policy PDF with an explicit prompt, have the policy owner review every scene in the storyboard before anything renders, open it as a draft, add a quiz, preview for free, generate once, and export it as a SCORM package with completion criteria your LMS can record.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

A policy that lives as a PDF gets read once, at signature. Colossyan turns the same document into a short avatar-led video with questions at the end, and its agent, Cora, drafts the storyboard so nobody starts from a blank script (AI Video Generator article). The draft is quick. The review is where the work is, because a training video states policy in your company's name. For plans and prices, see the Colossyan glossary entry.

Three things to settle first:

  1. Budget generations, not drafts. Drafts and previews are free; each generated video spends its length in minutes, measured to the second, and regenerating spends it again (minutes article). For example, a 5-minute module generated once, corrected, and generated again uses 10 of Professional's 30 NEO minutes a month; Professional is $89 a month on monthly billing (pricing page, checked on 26 October 2026).
  2. Use the document as it stands. Cora reads PPT, PDF, TXT and DOCX up to 5GB. Export the current policy version, not last year's.
  3. Decide what completion means before you build. SCORM export lets you set the completion criteria, and the LMS records who met them (SCORM article). Agree with HR or compliance whether "completed" means watched to the end or passed the quiz.

The free Starter plan is enough to build and review the draft. SCORM export needs Professional or Enterprise.

Step 1: Set up the brand kit

Create a brand kit with your fonts, logo and colours before the first draft; the AI Video Generator article recommends it, because Cora then uses them in the generation (AI Video Generator article). Brand kits are on every plan, Starter included, per the pricing page.

Step 2: Brief Cora with the PDF

On the home page, select AI Video Generator and then Try it now to open the Cora chat. Attach the policy PDF and write the prompt as explicitly as you can: the audience, the length, the three behaviours the video must change, and the one rule people get wrong. Select the brand kit and click the arrow at the bottom right. Cora processes the document, extracts its images and asks several questions about what you need; answer them.

Keep the brief short to medium. Colossyan recommends storyboards of up to around 15 scenes and letting Cora condense the source, because asking it to keep a long document in full can use a large share of a month's fair use allowance in one request (Cora limits article). Professional allows 35 storyboards a month opened as drafts; the free plan allows 3.

Step 3: Review the storyboard before it renders

The storyboard view shows scene previews on the left, each scene's script on the right and the Cora chat beside them. This is the human check, and it belongs to the policy owner, not the person who briefed Cora. They read every script against the PDF and mark anything that softens, overstates or invents a rule.

Fix what they find in place: edit a script directly, select part of it and add it to the chat for a targeted AI edit, select an object in the preview for a spot edit, or replace an image with stock or with images taken from the PDF. Global changes go in the chat. Add, delete or reorder scenes at the bottom of the storyboard (AI Video Generator article). Cora does not read images, so a layout described only in a picture of a slide will not carry over.

Step 4: Open it as a draft

Click Open as draft at the top right. The draft opens in a new tab in the Colossyan editor. Small changes, a text colour or a background, are quicker there and do not draw on Cora's fair use allowance (Cora limits article). You can find the storyboard again later under the plans area of the home page.

Step 5: Add the quiz

Cora does not yet create interactive videos, so add the questions in the editor. Click Interaction, add a question, write its title, edit up to four answer options, tick the correct one or ones, edit the Submit button text and set the feedback each answer gets. Preview the interactive scenes from the scene selector before you generate (interactive videos article). Write questions about the behaviours from your brief, not about wording a viewer could guess.

Step 6: Preview, then generate once

Previews do not use generation minutes. You cannot judge the avatar's lip sync there, but you can check the text for typos and adjust the voice, which is what matters here (minutes article). The estimated length sits at the bottom left of the editor, and that is what the generation deducts. A generated video is an MP4 that cannot be edited in Colossyan, and every regeneration charges the full length again, which is how a minutes plan earns from a missed typo. The free preview is where you stop paying for it.

If the presenter is a custom avatar of a real employee, put a line on screen saying the video is AI-generated. Under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, content that resembles a real person and would pass as authentic must be disclosed by whoever publishes it.

Step 7: Export as SCORM

In the Library, open the Videos tab, click the three dots on the video's thumbnail, choose Export as and then eLearning (.SCORM), set the completion criteria and click Export (SCORM article). Both SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 4th edition are available. For a video with branching, prefer 2004: SCORM 1.2 stores only the last 25 jumps. Upload the package to your LMS and assign it.

Mistakes the help centre flags

  • A PDF 2.0 file in the plain import. The PPT and PDF import supports PDF versions 1.3 to 1.7, not 2.0, and turns each page into a static background (import article).
  • Expecting an MP4 with the quiz. Interactive videos cannot be exported as MP4; share them by link, embed or SCORM (interactive videos article).
  • Spending the SCORM allowance on drafts. Professional's 5 SCORM exports a month are shared across the whole account and reset monthly (SCORM article).

FAQ

Do unused minutes carry over?

No. Minutes reset on the renewal date, monthly or annually depending on the plan, and annual plans receive the year's minutes at once (minutes article).

Will the learner keep their place in the LMS?

For interactive videos, yes: the SCORM package saves the current scene and branch, answers, jump history, volume and caption settings and the chosen language. Regular videos do not bookmark (SCORM article).

Can several colleagues work on the module?

Professional allows up to 3 editors, at $30 a month each beyond the first on yearly billing, and commenting is on paid plans, per the pricing page.
