The short answer: set up a custom domain for pages and email, create the product and an order form on an Ontraport page, build the opt-in form for the lead magnet, then draw an automation map that starts on the form fill, delivers the download, sends a short series pointing to the offer, and uses a Product is Purchased goal to move buyers onto a delivery path, publish it through the checklist, and read Performance Mode after two weeks.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

The job: you have a guide, a checklist or a mini course that people trade an email address for, and a paid product they should hear about next. Too often the download arrives and nothing follows, or buyers keep receiving the pitch for what they already bought. Ontraport can run the whole path, and stop the pitch at the moment someone pays. For what the platform is and costs, see the Ontraport glossary entry.

Before you build:

  • Do the price arithmetic first. For example, a $49 product needs 1,490 / 49 = 31 sales a year, rounded up from 30.4, to cover Pro billed annually at $1,490, per the pricing page checked on 24 October 2026. Plus, at $990 a year, needs 990 / 49 = 20.2, so 21.
  • Reuse what you already have. The guide you already give away and the sales page you already wrote become the lead magnet and the order page. Ontraport changes the plumbing, not the offer.
  • Choose the number that decides it: downloads that become buyers within 30 days. Performance Mode reports it once the purchase goal is on the map.

What you need

  • A custom domain configured for pages and email. Ontraport's sender guide makes it a prerequisite and accepts no free email addresses.
  • A payment gateway, such as Stripe, connected to the account.
  • An account level with order forms: the order form guide says they are available to some account levels and points to the pricing page.
  • A consent basis for the follow-up emails. The opt-in form is where you ask for it.

Step 1: Set up the sending domain and address

Configure your custom domain first, so any user added later with that domain is approved to send automatically. Then go to Administration, Email, Email 'From' Address Setup, click Add email, choose the domain and confirm the address from your inbox, per the sender guide. Add a recognisable from name and a reply-to address under Manage Users; the guide warns that a generic name like "Joe" can push mail into spam.

Step 2: Create the product and the order form

Go to Sales, Products, New product, and give it the name buyers will see; price, internal name and SKU are optional, per the order form guide. Build the order form on an Ontraport page, the guide's recommended option, add the product, confirm the payment gateway and currency, and choose an invoice receipt. If you instead embed an order form on another site, that site has to meet PCI requirements itself, per the Ontraform guide.

Step 3: Build the opt-in form

For a form on your own website, go to Forms in the Automations menu, click New Form, Ontraform, pick a template and add a Smart Form block for the contact fields, per the Ontraform guide. Complete the form settings, name it, save and publish, then copy the code for your site. The same guide warns that a submission missing a required custom field goes through without creating a record, so keep required fields to the ones on the form.

If you want people to confirm their address, Ontraport ships double opt-in messages, and a custom one must include the opt-in link, say that they agree to receive email and can unsubscribe at any time, and is reviewed within two business days, per the double opt-in guide.

Step 4: Draw the automation map

Hover over Contacts and click New Automation, name it, and click Add Trigger: choose the form fill from step 3, per the automation guide. Under What Happens Next?, add an action that sends the download email. Then add a wait and two or three emails that each answer an objection to the paid product and link to the order page.

Now add the goal. A Product is Purchased goal, set to your product, acts as a gate: the moment someone buys, it pulls them off the selling emails onto the path below it, per the goals guide. Under the goal, add the delivery email or the membership access. Finish every open branch with End.

Step 5: Check and publish

Open the automation checklist to confirm every element is configured, then click Publish, Save & Publish. In Publish, Subscription Settings, tick "Show this automation map on the subscription management page" and give it a public name, so a contact can leave this series without leaving all your email, per the automation guide. Submit the form yourself, buy with a test card if your gateway allows, and follow your own contact through the map.

Step 6: Ask an agent about the stragglers

Connect Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to Ontraport's MCP server at mcp.ontraport.com, and confirm the account number and email on the authorisation screen before you approve. Then ask for something small and judgment-heavy: read the ten most recent downloaders who reached the last email without buying, summarise what their records show, and draft one personal follow-up for each.

The agent drafts; you read and send, or discard. Keep it to small batches. Ontraport's guide is direct about the limit: the agent works with a bounded set of records, will not warn you when some are dropped, and prompts such as "tag all contacts who match" belong in the API or in n8n, Zapier or Make. If you later run it unattended, the same guide recommends a deterministic validation step before any write.

Step 7: Read Performance Mode

Click Performance in the top right of the map, per the Performance Mode guide. Funnel Conversion shows the rate from trigger to purchase goal, Goal Conversion Time shows how long buyers took, and email stats show sends, opens, clicks and opt-outs per message. UTM filters and ROI tracking need Pro.

What Ontraport's guides warn about

  • Required fields that are not on the form. The submission succeeds and no contact is created.
  • Generic sender names. They raise the chance of spam filtering.
  • Asking an agent about the whole database. It processes a fraction and sounds confident about the rest.
  • Embedding order forms elsewhere. Card compliance becomes the host site's job.
  • A custom double opt-in email with marketing in it. It fails review and is deactivated.

Every page, product and member you build inside one platform makes the next platform decision harder. That is the vendor's goal, and it is fine when the platform fits; keep your contact export and product list somewhere you control as well.

FAQ

Do I need Ontraport's pages, or can I keep my website?

You can keep your site and embed Ontraforms for the opt-in. For the order form, the order form guide recommends an Ontraport page, which also handles card compliance for you.

How do I stop buyers getting the sales emails?

Put a Product is Purchased goal on the map. Buyers jump to the path under the goal the moment they purchase, and the selling emails above it stop for them.

Can contacts leave one series but keep my newsletter?

Yes. Add the map to the subscription management page in its Subscription Settings, and contacts can unsubscribe from that map alone.
