The short answer: if you sell fewer than a dozen $20 products a month, Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 per sale costs less than Sellfy's Starter plan at $29 a month; past twelve sales Sellfy is cheaper, and at 150 sales a month the gap is $375 in Gumroad fees against $79 for Sellfy Business (card processing comes on top on both, checked on 26 October 2026 on the Gumroad pricing page, Gumroad's fees article and the Sellfy pricing page). Gumroad is the merchant of record and handles the sales tax; on Sellfy you are the seller and the VAT return is yours. Choose Gumroad if your job is testing a first product with no monthly cost, where its Discover marketplace can bring buyers. Choose Sellfy if your job is a store for an audience you already have, selling enough each month that a flat plan beats a percentage, with print-on-demand merch beside the downloads.

Count your sales before your features:
- The break-even, in orders. For example, at $20 a product Gumroad's fee is 10% x $20 + $0.50 = $2.50 a sale, so twelve sales cost $30 against Sellfy Starter's $29, using the Gumroad fees article and the Sellfy pricing page. Divide $29 by your own fee per sale to find your line.
- What you sell to whom today. If your buyers come from your own newsletter or social following, Gumroad's marketplace is a feature you are paying for and not using. If you sell merch, Sellfy prints and ships it from 11 fulfilment centres with no stock, per its homepage; the Gumroad pages read for this comparison describe no print-on-demand service.
- The number to keep after a switch. Fees as a share of gross sales each month; on Sellfy, add sales over the last 12 months against your plan's cap, since crossing $10,000 in that window moves you to Business, per its revenue limit article.
Three volumes, priced
All sales at $20; platform charges only, from the Gumroad pricing page, Gumroad's fees article and the Sellfy pricing page, monthly billing, checked on 26 October 2026.
| 10 sales a month | 50 sales a month | 150 sales a month | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gross sales | $200 | $1,000 | $3,000 |
| Gumroad, sales from your own link | $25 | $125 | $375 |
| Gumroad, every sale through Discover | $60 | $300 | $900 |
| Sellfy plan the yearly cap requires | Starter, $29 | Business, $79 | Business, $79 |
Card processing, typically 2.9% + 30¢, applies on both, charged by Gumroad on direct sales and by your own Stripe or PayPal account on Sellfy; Discover's 30% already includes it. Fifty sales a month is $12,000 a year, past Starter's $10,000 cap, which is why Sellfy jumps to Business there; billed yearly, Business is $59 a month (Sellfy pricing).
Where they part
Who carries the tax
Since 1 January 2025 Gumroad has sold as merchant of record, collecting tax in the regions where it has obligations, and it handles EU and UK VAT on digital products, with no option to make VAT inclusive in the price (pricing page, VAT article). Sellfy states in its merchant of record article that you are the seller: you are paid directly and you handle tax collection and compliance, with its tools applying EU VAT rates and producing the report for your return. Above the EUR 10,000 EU-wide threshold on the Commission's One Stop Shop portal, that return is quarterly paperwork you do not have on Gumroad.
Who finds the buyer
Gumroad's Discover is a marketplace where buyers search across creators, and a sale through it costs a flat 30% (pricing page). Sellfy's plan table lists no marketplace; its tools are for selling to people you bring, through your store, social profiles or buy buttons on your own site (pricing FAQ). A new creator without a list gets something from the 30%. An established one is mostly paying for reach they built themselves.
When the money lands
Sellfy sends each payment straight to your PayPal or Stripe account the moment a purchase is made, per its pricing FAQ. Gumroad pays out from a $100 balance on a schedule you choose, with a 7-day hold on weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts and daily payouts only for eligible US accounts (payouts article). Cash flow decides this for some sellers before price does.
A catalogue moved by two connectors
Both platforms document MCP servers. Gumroad's connector lists your products with prices and reads a product's description, but cannot download or upload files. Sellfy's MCP server, on every plan and the free trial, creates products unpublished, and a digital product cannot go live until a file, text, link or licence key is attached.
- Connect both in Claude: Gumroad from the connector directory with the Products permission only, Sellfy with the URL
https://api.sellfy.com/mcpand your Sellfy sign-in. - Ask the agent to read each Gumroad product's name, price and description and create a matching unpublished draft in Sellfy for each one. Then ask Sellfy's server which products have no image or a description shorter than two sentences, a check its MCP page documents.
- The human check: a person attaches each file from their own copies, compares every price with the Gumroad list, previews the store and publishes. Afterwards, revoke Gumroad's access under Authorized Applications in Gumroad's settings, since disconnecting inside Claude leaves the token active.
Free first, and the migration line on Sellfy's plans
Gumroad has no monthly fee, so a first product costs nothing until it sells. Sellfy's 14-day trial needs no card and its MCP server works during it, but checkout stays off until you pay for a plan, per its cost article. Build the whole store in the trial, drafts included, and pay only once it is ready to sell.
Now read who does the moving. Sellfy's cost article includes email contact migration on every plan, but product migration, where its team uploads your files and descriptions in 5 to 20 business days, only on Business and Premium. A Gumroad seller with forty listings who picks Starter, the plan the pricing page badges as the creators' favourite, gets the list moved and the products left to do, with the help one tier up at $79. The connectors above are how you do that part yourself on Starter.
Sellfy suits a seller who
- Sells a dozen or more products a month to an audience they already have.
- Wants merch printed after each order, next to downloads and subscriptions.
- Already files VAT or has an accountant who does.
Gumroad suits a seller who
- Is testing a first product and wants no monthly cost while volume is low.
- Wants Discover's browsing buyers, and accepts 30% on those sales (pricing page).
- Prefers the platform to hold the tax obligation for every sale.

FAQ
Does Sellfy charge a percentage of sales like Gumroad?
No. Sellfy charges a plan fee and no transaction fee, with a 2% overage possible on sales above your plan's yearly cap if you do not upgrade (pricing FAQ).
Does Gumroad's fee fall at higher volume?
Yes. Once paid sales pass $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50; Discover stays at 30% (fees article).
Can I keep my own payment account on either?
On Sellfy, yes: payments go to your own Stripe or PayPal (pricing FAQ). Gumroad takes payment as the seller and pays you out, though PayPal sales go straight to a connected PayPal account at the time of sale (payouts article).
