What Is Smartlead? Cold Email Built for Many Mailboxes
By Joris van Huët · Smartlead's own site
The short answer: Smartlead is a cold email platform that charges for what you send and how many contacts you store, not for mailboxes or seats. It is built for outbound teams and agencies that spread volume across many sending accounts and want warm-up, rotation and client workspaces handled from one dashboard.

How Smartlead works
The core is the campaign: a sequence of email steps, manual tasks and, for SmartDialer users, call steps, sent from mailboxes connected through Google OAuth, Outlook or SMTP, as Smartlead's campaign guide sets out. Sending rotates across every mailbox attached to a campaign, which the pricing page presents as a way to spread volume and protect each sender's reputation.
Warm-up is built in. Enabled accounts join a pool that sends, opens and replies to warm-up emails and moves them out of spam, and those emails do not use the account's daily sending limit, according to the warm-up explainer.
The rest is sold as named products on the homepage: SmartProspect for leads, SmartSenders for ready mailboxes, SmartServers for dedicated infrastructure, SmartDelivery for inbox placement tests, and a master inbox that sorts replies by intent.
Where it fits, and where it does not
Agencies are the clearest fit. From the Pro plan, each client can have a separate workspace with whitelabel branding for $29 a month, and the top plan includes three, per the pricing file.
It suits a solo user less well if that user needs CRM sync or an API from the start: the Base plan excludes API access, webhooks and CRM access, which begin on Pro.
Whatever the plan, the law decides whom you may email. Article 13 of the ePrivacy Directive (EUR-Lex) requires prior consent for direct marketing email to individuals, bans hiding the sender's identity, requires a valid address for opting out, and leaves each member state to protect companies as it sees fit. Smartlead's setting that adds an unsubscribe message to every email handles the mechanics, not the legal basis.

Against the rivals
The pairing worth reading is Smartlead vs Woodpecker. Smartlead sells volume tiers with agency workspaces on top; Woodpecker prices by emails sent, stores unlimited contacts, includes unlimited team members and adds LinkedIn steps.

FAQ
Do warm-up emails count against the send allowance?
No. The trial article says warm-up emails are tracked apart from the send limit. Bounced campaign emails do count, because they were sent before they bounced.
What is the difference between a contact and a send?
A stored contact is one unique prospect address, counted against the contacts limit. A send is one email, follow-ups included. The pricing file calls them separate counters, so one contact can be emailed several times within the allowance.
How long is the free trial?
Fourteen days with no credit card: 2,500 sends, 1,250 stored contacts and unlimited mailbox connections. White labelling is the one feature left out, according to the trial article.
