The short answer: choose Smartlead if you send at high volume, want API access included from the middle plan and manage clients in separate workspaces. Choose Woodpecker if your contact list is large relative to what you send, you want LinkedIn steps inside the same campaign, or you want unlimited team members and catch-all verification without paying extra for either.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

The two start at the same headline price and then part ways on what they count. Smartlead meters stored contacts and sends. Woodpecker meters emails sent and leaves contact storage open, then charges separately for some pieces, the API among them. Neither model is cheaper in general; each is cheaper for a particular shape of outbound.

What decides it

The shape of your outbound

Smartlead's tiers bundle two allowances, so a big list with modest sending can push you up a plan for storage alone: Base stores 2,000 contacts and Pro 30,000, per its pricing file. Woodpecker stores unlimited contacts on every tier and moves you up only when monthly sends grow, per its pricing page. At heavy volume the comparison turns: Smartlead's Unlimited Prime gives 500,000 sends for $379 a month, while Woodpecker's 500,000-email tier is $499, both on monthly billing.

What counts as an add-on

Woodpecker's pricing page lists free warm-up slots, catch-all verification and unlimited seats in the base price, then charges $20 a month for integrations, a bundle that covers the API, webhooks, MCP, CLI and the HubSpot and Pipedrive sync. LinkedIn automation is $29 a month per connected account. Smartlead includes API and webhooks from Pro but sells verification as credit packs, and its LinkedIn support is a manual task in the sequence rather than automation. Total the add-ons you would switch on before comparing headline prices.

How careful the sending is by default

Woodpecker's help centre is explicit about restraint: it recommends 25 to 35 emails per mailbox per day and advises against more than 50 (daily limit article), and its campaigns branch on opens, clicks, tasks, snippets or LinkedIn connection requests. Smartlead's tooling assumes scale: domain-level rate limiting, high bounce auto-protection and a 50-per-address ceiling in its secondary domain article, with volume coming from more mailboxes rather than more mail per box.

What each costs at four volumes

Checked on 23 October 2026 on the Smartlead pricing page and the Woodpecker pricing page, monthly billing. Woodpecker's page shows the same figures in USD and EUR.

Monthly volumeSmartleadWoodpecker, email plan
About 5,000 to 6,000 sendsBase, $39 (6,000 sends)$39 (5,000 emails), or $26 a month billed annually
About 90,000 to 100,000 sendsPro, $94 (90,000 sends)$119 (100,000 emails)
150,000 sendsUnlimited Smart, $174Between tiers: $219 buys 250,000
500,000 sendsUnlimited Prime, $379$499

For Woodpecker's multichannel plan, add $29 a month for each LinkedIn account.

For agencies the per-client fees matter more than the plan. For example, ten clients on Smartlead cost 10 x $29 = $290 a month in workspace fees, and ten active clients on Woodpecker with white label cost 10 x ($27 + $5) = $320, both on top of the plan, using the Smartlead pricing file and the Woodpecker pricing page.

The legal side of a lead database

Both tools sell lead data, Smartlead through SmartProspect and Woodpecker through Lead Finder. The European Commission's answer on data received from a third party says the supplier must be able to show it collected the data lawfully and may pass it on for advertising, that the list must be current, and that you must tell people at the latest in your first message that you hold their data. Woodpecker adds a GDPR encryption action that permanently erases a prospect's data on request. The rules on cold email differ by country, so treat a database as a starting point for checks, not a licence to send.

Choose Smartlead if

  • You send hundreds of thousands of emails a month and want the lower price at that volume.
  • You want API and webhooks without a separate add-on, from the Pro plan up.
  • You manage clients and want each in its own workspace.

Choose Woodpecker if

  • Your contact database is large and your monthly sending is moderate.
  • LinkedIn invitations, visits and messages belong in the same campaign as email.
  • You want a vendor with its company address in the EU, unlimited seats and verification in the base price.

Each tool has its own entry: Smartlead and Woodpecker.

FAQ

Do both tools charge per mailbox?

No. Smartlead's pricing file says every plan includes unlimited email accounts, and Woodpecker's pricing page lists unlimited email accounts at no extra cost. Mailboxes bought through either tool are charged separately.

What happens when I hit the sending limit?

On Woodpecker, the campaign stops sending new emails to new prospects until you upgrade or the limit renews on your billing date, per its pricing FAQ. Smartlead's pausing article lists an exceeded email credit limit as one reason a campaign pauses.

Which trial is more useful?

Smartlead's allows 2,500 sends over 14 days, per its trial article. Woodpecker's ends at 14 days or 500 cold emails, whichever comes first, though its FAQ says you can ask through chat to extend it. Both start without a credit card.
