Databox vs Looker Studio (now Data Studio): Goals or a Canvas

The short answer: if a head of marketing wants monthly KPIs from GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads and HubSpot tracked against targets without anyone building a report, Databox does that out of the box: those are 4 data sources, one more than its free plan holds, so Analyst at $89 a month, or $71 billed annually, covers one person and Team Core at $249, or $199 annually, covers three (Databox pricing). If someone on the team likes building reports and most of the data is Google's, Looker Studio, which Google renamed back to Data Studio on 16 April 2026 (release notes), costs nothing for creators or viewers (Data Studio pricing). Both checked on 26 October 2026. Choose Databox if your job is a scoreboard that explains itself; choose Data Studio if your job is a report built exactly the way you want it.
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
Data Studio is a free drag-and-drop editor for charts, tables and controls, with existing Looker Studio reports and links carried over unchanged by the rename (welcome page). Databox starts from the other end: ready-made metrics, each with a definition and an owner, goals, and an AI analyst called Genie (Databox).
Before the first dashboard:
- Count sources the way Databox does. Each property or account is one data source (pricing FAQ). For example, two GA4 properties, Google Ads, Meta Ads and HubSpot are 2 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 5, which is Analyst's full allowance; a second person who needs to edit pushes the team to Team Core. In Data Studio the two Google sources are free, and Meta Ads and HubSpot need third-party community connectors (available connectors).
- Check what your Google account allows. Data Studio Pro is sold as a self-service upgrade to Google Workspace or Cloud Identity organisations (subscription overview), and in a Workspace organisation community connectors only fetch data when Apps Script is switched on (community connectors). Ask IT before you plan on either.
- Count the questions that reach the analyst. For one month, log every request for a number that should already be on the dashboard. If the log stays long after the switch, the tool is not answering what people ask.
Where each feature begins
| Feature | Databox | Data Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Building dashboards | 1 on Free, unlimited on paid plans (pricing FAQ) | Unlimited reports at no charge (pricing) |
| Ads and CRM beyond Google | Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads and HubSpot among 130+ integrations (integrations) | Third-party community connectors (community connectors) |
| A target on a metric | Goals on every plan (goal article) | Reference lines and bands on charts (reference lines) |
| Being told when a number moves | Anomaly detection on every plan; sharing and notifications from Team (pricing) | Chart alerts on Pro content only (alerts article) |
| Questions in plain language | Genie on every plan, paid in AI credits (pricing) | Conversational Analytics for every user, with data agents built in BigQuery (overview) |
| How fresh the data is | Daily on Free, hourly on paid plans (pricing) | Every 12 hours for Google's marketing connectors, fixed (data freshness) |
What separates a canvas from a scoreboard
Building, or being handed
Data Studio gives you the pieces: charts, calculated fields, blends that join fields from different sources into one chart, and controls viewers can use to filter (blended data, welcome page). Everything else is up to the person building. Databox hands you thousands of prebuilt metrics and asks you to give each a definition and an owner, so that a goal, a dashboard and an AI answer all start from the same figure (homepage). The first rewards a builder. The second rewards a team that never wants to become one.
Who hears when a number moves
On free Data Studio, the push channel is a scheduled PDF by email, within daily and monthly quotas per sender (delivery article). Alerts that fire when a chart meets a condition are a Pro feature, as is sending to Slack (Slack delivery). Databox puts goals and anomaly detection on every plan, and the notifications and sharing a team reads, including Genie in Slack, start on Team (pricing). Both fence their alerts, at different heights.
What the AI can reach
Databox's Genie works over the metrics you have connected, on every plan, and draws on a monthly credit pool (pricing). In Data Studio's new Conversational Analytics, available to all users, the supported sources are data agents that someone has built in BigQuery and shared; you cannot create one inside Data Studio (overview). Without a BigQuery project, Data Studio's chat with your data has nothing to read.
A board deck drafted by Gemini, checked by a person
On Data Studio Pro with Gemini switched on, open the monthly report, choose the Gemini panel and generate a Google Slides presentation. Data Studio inserts each chart as an image, writes a short summary of every chart beside it and saves the deck to Google Drive (Slides with Gemini). Google's own page warns that the output can look plausible and still be wrong, and asks you to validate it. So the marketing lead reads each summary against its chart, deletes any sentence that claims a cause the chart cannot show, and only then shares the deck. While in preview, these Gemini features cost nothing extra, and Google says a fee may follow.
Prices, and what they buy
Data Studio costs nothing for building and viewing; Pro is $9 per user per project a month and adds team workspaces, organisation-owned content, alerts, Slack and Google Chat delivery and Gemini (Data Studio pricing, About Data Studio Pro). Databox runs from Free at $0, through Analyst at $89 a month ($71 billed annually) and Team Core at $249 ($199), to Team Scale at $399 for 10 users and 30 sources (Databox pricing). All checked on 26 October 2026, in US dollars.
Free on both sides
Both have a plan that costs nothing, so run them side by side for two weeks. On Databox Free, connect your three most-watched sources and set a goal on each, as the Databox how-to shows. In Data Studio, build the same view from GA4 and Google Ads. Then look at who opened which. One default deserves a decision before the free version spreads: a report built at no cost sits in its creator's Owned by me folder and belongs to that person, while Pro content belongs to the organisation through a Google Cloud project (subscription overview), so the fix Google sells for the analyst who leaves with the reports is a Pro licence per editor. Share every free report with a team-owned account from day one.
Choose Databox if your job is a scoreboard
- Monthly marketing KPIs held against goals, explained in plain language by an AI analyst.
- Data from Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads and HubSpot alongside Google's, without third-party connectors.
- A team that wants notifications and Slack updates rather than a report to open.
Choose Looker Studio, now Data Studio, if your job is a custom report
- Mostly Google Ads, GA4, Search Console and BigQuery data.
- Someone who builds reports well and wants full control over the layout.
- A budget of zero, with Pro only when team workspaces or alerts become worth $9 a licence.
Databox vs Power BI and Databox vs Geckoboard cover Databox against a full BI tool and a wall-screen dashboard; AgencyAnalytics vs Looker Studio covers Data Studio for agencies.
FAQ
Do I need to rebuild my Looker Studio reports after the rename?
No. Google says reports need no update, and lookerstudio.google.com redirects to the new domain; only companies that restrict outside sites through a proxy need to add the new domain (welcome page).
Do Databox goals work on the free plan?
Yes, goals are on every plan (goal article). Notifications and sharing with a team start on Team, checked on 26 October 2026 (pricing).
Does every Data Studio Pro user need a licence?
Only people who create, edit or manage Pro content. Viewers need sharing permission and no licence (subscription overview).
