The short answer: if the website has to sell, book or invoice, Squarespace Core does it for $29 a month billed annually, or $39 monthly, with unlimited contributors and no fee on online store orders (Squarespace pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If the website is a design-led marketing site, Framer Basic publishes it on your own domain for $10 a month billed yearly, or $15 monthly, and Pro at $30 adds staging, branches and a larger CMS (Framer pricing). Choose Framer if your job is a brand site that a designer shapes and the team keeps fresh. Choose Squarespace if your job is running the business through its website.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Squarespace sells a business on a website: online stores, services, invoicing, scheduling, content and memberships, donations, payments and email campaigns sit in its product menu, and its Design Intelligence layer builds sections, writes and generates images through an assistant that understands your site (homepage, Design Intelligence). Framer sells the page itself. You lay it out on a canvas, alone or with a design agent whose changes stay editable, and publish to Framer's hosting with CMS, analytics and SEO included (Framer homepage). A florist and a software startup can both use either. They will not be equally happy.

Write these down first:

  1. A year on monthly billing, and on yearly. For example, Framer Basic costs 12 x $15 = $180 paid monthly or 12 x $10 = $120 billed yearly; Squarespace Core costs 12 x $39 = $468 or 12 x $29 = $348 (Framer pricing, Squarespace pricing). The gap between them is the price of the business tools.
  2. What the site sells today. Squarespace takes 2% of online store transactions on Basic and none from Core, and 7%, 5%, 1% or 0% of digital content and membership sales by plan, before card rates from 2.9% + $0.30 (Squarespace pricing). Framer's pricing page lists no store or checkout.
  3. Who edits. Squarespace Basic allows 2 contributors and Core unlimited; Framer charges $20 a month per extra editor on yearly billing and $10 per content editor who only updates the CMS (Squarespace pricing, Framer pricing).
  4. Enquiries per month. Take the last three months from the contact form or the booking calendar. That is the baseline the new site has to beat, whichever one you build.

Where the choice turns

A canvas or a template with tools attached

Framer's canvas is a design tool: the agent generates and refines in place and every change can be edited by hand, which suits a site that changes shape with each campaign (Framer homepage). Squarespace starts from a template or an AI-generated starting point and keeps you in a drag-and-drop editor, with promotional pop-ups and form and button conversion insights from Core (Design Intelligence, pricing). A designer will want the first. An owner who updates the site between appointments will want the second.

The business behind the page

Squarespace's plans are built around money changing hands: lower card rates as you climb, from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic to 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced, automated taxes and shipping from Core, and no fees on digital content and memberships only on Advanced (pricing). Framer's plans are built around pages, CMS items, bandwidth and seats, with paid add-ons for translation and testing (pricing). If revenue moves through the site, Squarespace carries it. If the site sends people to a sales team or an app, Framer carries less you will not use.

Prices on both billing cycles

PlanBilled yearly, per monthBilled monthly
Framer Basic$10$15
Framer Pro$30$45
Squarespace Basic$19$25
Squarespace Core$29$39
Squarespace Plus$49$65
Squarespace Advanced$99$139

Checked on 26 October 2026 on the Framer and Squarespace pricing pages, in USD. Framer adds $20 a month per extra editor on yearly billing, $30 on monthly; Squarespace includes contributors in the plan.

An AI check of how assistants describe you

Squarespace's AI Visibility runs questions through AI search such as ChatGPT and shows whether your site is mentioned, where it appears and which competitors and sources come up instead.

  1. Open AI Visibility in the dashboard. It drafts the kind of questions people put to an AI tool about businesses like yours.
  2. The human check, before anything runs: replace the drafts with questions customers really ask, taken from sales emails and booking notes. You can edit, add and delete prompts, and a question nobody asks wastes a run.
  3. Run them and note, per question, whether you appear and who appears instead.
  4. Change one page, then re-run the same questions next month. Basic includes 10 runs once; Core includes 20 a month (pricing).

Framer lists AEO among its built-in features and offers an MCP server through which an agent can update CMS content, held in the project or a branch until someone publishes; measuring the effect is left to you.

Build it free before choosing

Framer's free plan builds the site on a Framer domain, and Squarespace's 14-day trial needs no card (Framer pricing, Squarespace FAQ). Make the same three pages in each, a homepage, a service page with a form and an about page, then hand both to whoever will edit them next month.

Watch the limits while you build on Framer's free plan. Its FAQ gives free projects 10 CMS collections and 1,000 pages, while Basic, the cheapest plan that connects your own domain, allows 2 collections and 30 pages, so a site that grew freely during the build reaches checkout already sized for Pro at $30 rather than Basic at $10 (Framer pricing). Keep the build inside Basic's limits unless you have already decided on Pro.

Choose Framer if your job is

  • A brand or product site where the design is part of the pitch.
  • Campaign pages that change layout often, reviewed on staging or a branch on Pro.
  • Testing pages through the Convert add-on rather than guessing.

Choose Squarespace if your job is

  • Selling products, services, memberships or donations from the same site.
  • Bookings and invoices next to the pages, for a small team with unlimited contributors from Core.
  • Seeing how AI assistants answer questions about your business, from the dashboard.

FAQ

Which is cheaper for a five-page site with no shop?

Framer Basic, at $10 a month billed yearly against Squarespace Basic at $19 (Framer pricing, Squarespace pricing). Both include a custom domain on yearly billing.

Can Squarespace's AI build the site for me?

It builds a starting point. Squarespace says you describe your business and get a personalised site with content and imagery in place, then refine it by conversation or by hand (Design Intelligence).

What happens if a Framer site goes over its bandwidth?

You may exceed the bandwidth limit for one month, with an email warning so you can move up; for other limits Framer asks you to upgrade in the app (Framer pricing FAQ).
