The short answer: if the website also has to take bookings, send invoices, sell products or run memberships, Squarespace Core covers all of it for $29 a month billed annually, with unlimited contributors and no fee on online store orders (Squarespace pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If the website is the marketing engine, with a large CMS, A/B tests, localisation and an AI agent editing it, Webflow Premium is the base at $25 a month billed yearly, or $39 monthly, per site (Webflow pricing). Choose Squarespace if your job is running a small business from its website. Choose Webflow if your job is a site that a marketing team builds, measures and changes every week.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

Squarespace is a business suite with a website at the front. Its homepage sells online stores, services, invoices, scheduling, donations, memberships and paywalled blogs, each with payments attached, plus email campaigns and Acuity Scheduling from the same company (homepage). Webflow sells the website itself, built on a visual canvas that writes the code, with a CMS of collections and add-ons for analytics, testing and translation (pricing). One answers how to run a business online. The other answers how a marketing team ships pages without a developer.

Settle these first:

  1. A year on each. For example, Squarespace Core is 12 x $29 = $348 a year billed annually. Webflow Premium is 12 x $25 = $300, and a Core Workspace for custom code and code export adds 12 x $19 = $228, so $528 (Squarespace pricing, Webflow pricing).
  2. What you sell through the site today. For example, $2,000 a month of membership sales on Squarespace Core costs $29 + 0.05 x $2,000 = $129 a month, above Advanced at $99, which takes 0% on digital content and memberships (Squarespace pricing). If you sell nothing, this row costs nothing.
  3. The content you already publish. Posts, case studies, team bios, locations. Webflow Premium holds 20,000 CMS items in 40 collections, and Basic holds none (Webflow pricing). Count yours before reading feature lists.
  4. The number the site answers to. Enquiries or bookings per 100 visitors, taken monthly from whichever analytics you already trust, before and after any move.

Read on 26 October 2026 on the Squarespace pricing page, the Squarespace developer platform, the Webflow pricing page and the Webflow MCP overview. Squarespace's pricing page showed two layouts across loads that day, with the same prices in both.

Where they part

Selling is included, or added

Squarespace prices its plans around commerce. Card rates fall from 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic and Core to 2.7% on Plus and 2.5% on Advanced, and Advanced adds high-traffic checkout (pricing). Webflow keeps ecommerce on separate plans and spends its site plans on content and performance: bandwidth from 50 GB, code components, site search and form file uploads on Premium (pricing). Webflow also now sells Campaigns, from $2k a month, a landing page and ad product that works alongside any CMS, Squarespace included; that is a budget line for a funded marketing team, not for a shop.

Who can change what

Squarespace gives contributors a drag-and-drop editor and opens CSS and JavaScript customisation from Core (pricing). Webflow gives a designer a canvas with classes, components and variables, and gives editors a content role; site-level roles and publishing permissions arrive on the Growth Workspace at $49 a month billed yearly (pricing). A three-person business will feel Squarespace as lighter. A ten-person marketing team will feel Webflow's structure as protection.

What an agent can reach

Webflow's MCP server, listed on every site plan, lets an AI client build elements and styles, manage CMS collections and update asset metadata (MCP overview). Squarespace's developer platform lists Commerce APIs for orders, products, inventory and transactions, webhooks, a code-injection spec, and its API docs offered to Claude or ChatGPT for developers (developer platform). No server for editing site content was listed there on 26 October 2026.

Alt text for every image, drafted by an agent

Webflow documents asset tools for exactly this: list a site's assets, read their alt text, and update it (data tools).

  1. Connect the Webflow MCP server to the workspace that holds the site.
  2. Ask for a table of every image with empty or generic alt text, a proposed description beside each, and no changes yet.
  3. The human check: someone who knows the products corrects the descriptions, marks decorative images to leave empty, and approves the table.
  4. Ask the agent to apply only the approved rows, then review the pages and publish the site.

On Squarespace, with no such server listed, the same audit runs through the editor.

Free first

Webflow's Starter plan is free for as long as you like, on a webflow.io address, and Squarespace's 14-day trial needs no card (Webflow pricing, Squarespace FAQ). Build the same three pages in each, a homepage, a service page with a form and one article, and note how long the second round of edits takes.

Squarespace's cheapest plan carries the heaviest fees on what you sell: 2% on store orders and 7% on memberships, where the store fee drops to 0% on Core and the membership fee only on Advanced (pricing). On Basic, part of what you pay Squarespace comes out of each sale rather than the subscription. Its free domain, too, comes only with annual billing, per its FAQ, so on monthly billing the domain is bought separately or brought from elsewhere.

Choose Squarespace if your job is

  • Running bookings, invoices, a shop or memberships from the same site and dashboard.
  • Letting a small team edit pages without a designer.
  • Paying one subscription for site, hosting, selling and email campaigns.

Choose Webflow if your job is

  • A marketing site with a large, structured CMS that editors publish into.
  • Testing, localising and measuring pages as part of the site's plan.
  • Letting an AI agent work on the site through a documented MCP server.

FAQ

Does Squarespace have a free plan?

No. Every site starts with a 14-day free trial with no card, and paid plans begin at $19 a month billed annually or $25 monthly (Squarespace pricing).

Is Webflow cheaper than Squarespace?

For a site with no CMS, Webflow Basic is $15 a month billed yearly against Squarespace Basic at $19 (Webflow pricing, Squarespace pricing). With a CMS and a Workspace for collaborators, Webflow costs more; with selling, Squarespace's fees enter the sum.

Can I move from Squarespace to Webflow?

The content moves; the commerce has to be rebuilt. Webflow's MCP server can create CMS items from a spreadsheet as drafts for an editor to publish (data tools), while bookings, invoices and memberships need new homes outside the site plan.
