Gumloop vs Zapier: Agents That Decide or Zaps That Repeat

The short answer: if the work is open-ended, such as preparing briefs on 20 accounts where the agent decides what to read, Gumloop is built for it: Pro starts at $37 a month with 20,000 credits and unlimited seats (Gumloop pricing). If the work is the same chain every time, such as a form entry copied to the CRM with a Slack alert, Zapier runs it with free triggers and filters, from $0 for 100 tasks a month or from $29.99 a month on monthly billing for Professional (Zapier pricing). Both were checked on 26 October 2026.

Gumloop moves the planning from you to the agent. You hand it a model, instructions, connectors and skills, and for each task it picks which tools to call; triggers start it on an app event, a webhook, a schedule or once at a set time, and people reach it by email, Slack or Teams (agents). The job it wins is research and preparation that changes shape every time, run for a whole team. Zapier keeps the plan in your hands. A Zap is a trigger and one or more actions, run the same way each time it fires, across a directory of 9,000+ apps (pricing FAQ).
A quick sizing, with your numbers:
- Cost one agent task on each meter. For example, a research chat that spends 300 credits on the model, 8 on connector calls and 5 on compute pays an 8% fee on 313, which is 25.04 rounded up to 26, so 339 credits; Pro's 20,000 then cover 20,000 / 339 = 58 such chats a month (credits). On Zapier, an AI step on the Premium tier that makes three tool calls uses (1 x 5) + (3 x 5) = 20 tasks a run (model tiers).
- Name the systems the job reads and writes. Gumloop agents use 300+ connectors and custom MCP servers (agents); Zapier lists 9,000+ apps and private integrations for internal tools (pricing FAQ).
- Pick a unit of output before the trial. Gumloop's credit logs show one row per conversation with each charge inside it (credits); Zapier emails you near and at the task limit (pricing FAQ). Divide either bill by briefs delivered, not by runs.
What each one does
| Gumloop does | Zapier does | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing | Credits at $0.005: model tokens at cost, 1 per connector call, 5 per active minute, plus 8% (credits) | A task per successful action; AI steps at 1, 3 or 5 tasks by tier (task usage) |
| Who plans the steps | The agent, task by task | You, in the Zap; an AI step can choose its own tools at runtime (model tiers) |
| Asking before acting | Per connector: Always allow, Ask each time, Ask for writes/deletes, Never allow, Custom (human in the loop) | Human in the Loop: Request Approval and Collect Data, on every plan (help) |
| A ceiling on spend | Pro overage capped at 1,000,000 credits a period by default (credits) | An AI step pauses at 75 tasks per run by default, adjustable to 500 (model tiers) |
| Seats | Unlimited on Pro (pricing) | One on Free and Professional, 25 on Team (pricing) |
| Other AI tools calling in | Gumloop MCP server, for Claude, Cursor and others (MCP server) | Zapier MCP, 2 tasks per tool call (pricing FAQ) |
Where they part
A plan the agent writes, or a chain you wrote
Gumloop's docs call agent costs variable: you pay for what the agent does on each task, not a fixed price per message, because the agent decides how much work the task needs (credits). On Zapier the chain is fixed: filters and paths decide the route, and those steps use no tasks (task usage). Predictable work belongs in the chain. Judgement belongs with the agent.
Two ways to price AI
Gumloop passes model costs through at the provider's price and adds its fee; bring your own key and model credits fall to zero while the fee rises to 16% (credits). Zapier prices each AI step by tier, and new steps on paid plans start on Premium, the 5x tier (model tiers). On Zapier you choose the tier; on Gumloop you choose the model.
Who is in the room
Gumloop's Pro plan carries unlimited seats, teams and shared credentials (pricing). Zapier's Free and Professional plans are single-user, and sharing Zaps and app connections starts on Team (pricing FAQ).
An agent with its own inbox
The job: sponsorship and partnership requests arrive by email, and nobody answers them in time. Gumloop's Email Inbox channel gives an agent its own address, so the team forwards or CCs requests to it (agents). The agent looks up the sender's company, checks the request against your criteria and drafts a reply. Its Gmail connector is set to Ask each time, so every Gmail call, the send included, pauses and an approval card arrives by in-app notification, Slack DM or in the thread, and the agent continues only on approval (human in the loop). Gumloop's docs warn that cards show key details rather than every argument, so read the draft itself before approving. On Zapier the closer build is a Gmail trigger, an AI step and a Request Approval step before the send.
Prices, checked on 26 October 2026
From the Zapier pricing page and the Gumloop pricing page, per month:
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | What comes with it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zapier Free | $0 | $0 | 100 tasks, two-step Zaps |
| Zapier Professional | From $29.99 | From $19.99 | Multi-step Zaps, one user |
| Zapier Team | From $103.50 | From $69 | 25 users, shared connections |
| Zapier Enterprise | On request | On request | Unlimited users |
| Gumloop Pro | From $37 | Not listed | 20,000 credits, unlimited seats |
| Gumloop Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Credits that roll over |
Zapier Agents is a separate add-on billed in activities, 400 a month on its Free tier and 1,500 on Pro (Agents usage); its price sits on a tab of the pricing page that would not open when read on 26 October 2026. Gumloop's 14-day trial takes a card and becomes paid Pro unless cancelled (credits).
Switch on Gumloop's credit overage to keep agents running past the 20,000 credits, and the ceiling already filled in is 1,000,000 overage credits a billing period, $5,000, unless you type a lower cap on the same page (credits). For example, $5,000 / $37 = 135 times the plan price. A ceiling that high keeps busy agents from stopping mid-task, and the busy month is where Gumloop earns beyond the $37. Enter your own Overage Cap on the day you enable it.
The fixed half first, for free
Most of these jobs have a fixed half and an open half. Build the fixed half on Zapier's Free plan, or in the 14-day Professional trial that needs no card (Zapier pricing FAQ): the trigger, the filter, the CRM write. Then give only the open half, the research and the draft, to a Gumloop agent during its trial, with a reminder set for day 12. If the Zap alone answers most requests well enough, you have your answer without paying for the second tool.
Choose Gumloop if your job is
- Research, briefs and replies where the agent should decide what to read and which tools to use.
- An agent a whole team talks to by email, Slack or Teams, on one credit pool with unlimited seats.
- Choosing the model per agent, including your own provider key.
Choose Zapier if your job is
- The same chain of app actions every time, across a very wide app directory.
- Flows made mostly of filters, paths and formatting, which use no tasks.
- One AI step inside a fixed Zap, priced by the tier you choose.
FAQ
Do failed steps cost anything?
Not on either. Zapier does not count actions that error or halt, and Gumloop does not charge failed connector calls (Zapier task usage, Gumloop credits).
Can I use my own model key on both?
Yes. Zapier's own-account tier counts 1x per AI step and per tool call (model tiers); on Gumloop, model credits drop to zero and the orchestration fee becomes 16% (credits).
Can one Gumloop plan serve a whole team?
Yes. Pro lists unlimited seats and teams, with shared credentials, and one pool of 20,000 monthly credits (Gumloop pricing).
