How to Audit Ad-to-Landing-Page Alignment Across an Account

The short answer: one ad is a judgment call. Two hundred ads is an inventory problem, and most of the work is finding which pages the clicks reached. If your Meta and Google accounts spend less than €75,000 a month between them, AdAlign's Growth band covers the connected audit from €590 a month on an annual contract (pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). The right first move is still the free one: score one pair in the free audit, then run the account by hand once, so you know what the tool is replacing. The method: list every live ad with the page its clicks reached, check each pair on four dimensions, write the spend beside every flag, fix the page or the ad, and repeat on a schedule. A read-only connection then does the first three steps every day.
Disclosure: I earn a commission if you buy AdAlign through a link on this page, and this page recommends it. Every claim about AdAlign links to AdAlign's own pages.
Before step 1, size the job:
- The hours, worked out. For example, 60 live ads at 6 minutes a pair is 60 x 6 = 360 minutes. That is six hours for one pass, before a single fix. AdAlign's own guide puts a careful manual check at several minutes per pair, more for video (audit guide). Multiply by the passes you want each month.
- The exports you already have. Meta's import and export template carries a Link column next to each ad ID and name (Meta template columns). Google's Landing pages page lists every page that received ad traffic, with a View expanded landing pages link under each one (Google Ads Help). Those two files are your starting inventory.
- The reading that proves the audit paid. Write down conversion rate per landing page before you change anything. Google suggests conversion rate as a proxy for landing page experience (Quality Score guidance). It is also the number you will compare after the fixes.
Four checks, asked from the visitor's side
Every pair gets the same four checks. AdAlign scores the same four, with default weights its homepage publishes (AdAlign), and those weights shift by platform and placement.
| Dimension | What has to be true, on a phone | Default weight | A typical failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual match | The thing in the ad is the first thing on the page | 40% | Ad shows one navy coat, page opens on the whole outerwear range |
| Message match | The headline, offer and button words come back | 20% | Ad says "Book a free fitting", page button says "Shop now" |
| Above the fold continuity | The promise is confirmed before any scroll | 20% | The 15% code is real but sits under three carousels |
| Tone | It sounds like the same brand talking | 20% | A chatty creator video lands on legal-sounding product copy |
The audit by hand, in five steps
- Build the pair list. Export the ads with their Link column from Meta Ads Manager (template columns). Download the Landing pages table from Google Ads and open the expanded landing pages for each row (Google Ads Help). One row per unique ad and page. Ten ads pointing at one page are ten rows here, and one fix later.
- Add the pages nobody chose. Final URL expansion is on by default when you opt into AI Max (Final URL expansion in Search). The Landing pages report then includes the URLs Google picked, with a Selected by column marking them (AI Max reporting). Performance Max has the same setting on by default (Final URL expansion in Performance Max). On Meta, Optimise website destination can send a click to your home page, a product page or a collection page (Meta Business Help). Each such page is its own row.
- Judge each pair on a phone. Ad preview and page side by side, pass or flag on each check, and one concrete line on the worst: "offer missing above the fold", not "weak".
- Write the money beside the flags. For each flagged row, take last week's spend, divide it by 7 and multiply by 30. That is AdAlign's homepage definition of spend at risk (AdAlign). Its ad QA guide uses the last 30 days instead (ad QA guide), both read 27 October 2026. Sort by that column, then group by page.
- Fix, then book the next pass. Change the page when it serves many ads. Change the ad when it promises what the business does not offer. Re-check after any edit to ad, page or offer.
The finished sheet is the audit: pages ranked by what their mismatches cost, each with its weakest check and a fix date.
The same audit with AdAlign connected
The connected version starts from a read-only OAuth link to Meta and Google Ads. AdAlign syncs every live ad with its destination URL and scores each pair out of 10, with the weakest dimension named. It rolls ads up to their page and ranks pages by spend at risk. Monitored pages are re-checked daily and marked Stable, Pending or Drifted (how it works). That replaces the pair list, the phone check and the spend column. The fix stays a human decision.
Two gaps. TikTok, LinkedIn and Reddit ads do not sync, and are scored by upload (pricing). And AdAlign's own pages differ on the free tier. The use cases page says a free account can connect one account for up to five pairs a month (use cases). The FAQ says direct connection needs a paid plan (FAQ, both read 27 October 2026). Ask on the demo.
An agent step for the platforms that do not sync. On Scale and above, an agent can send each TikTok, LinkedIn or Reddit pair to POST /api/analyze-ad with the image URL, page URL and platform, then write the scores and fixes back into your sheet (analyze-ad reference). Pages that could not be captured (url_only) or answer 404 (link_broken) use no evaluation. The agent files them as their own rows, not as scores. The human check: before any row scoring below 5 goes to the page owner, a person opens that ad and page on a phone and confirms the named mismatch is real.
The setting that moves the target after you audit
Final URL expansion and Optimise website destination do something useful: they pick the page, so nobody has to. That is also the trouble with them. The choice of page goes to the platform that sells the media, not to the person who answers for the conversion. So an audit done at launch ends up describing pages some visitors never see. URL exclusions in AI Max and Performance Max narrow the field. The pages left in play still need checking on a schedule.
Start free, then decide on the pilot
Run the free audit on the pair you are least sure about. The overall score needs no account. A free account adds the four-dimension breakdown, the element comparison and 5 audits a month (free audit FAQ). Set it beside your hand audit and see whether the scorer flags what you flagged. If it does not, you want to know that before you pay for anything.
If the account outgrows the spreadsheet, AdAlign, which pays me a commission, starts every plan with a paid 30-day pilot at €1,500. It comes off your first invoices if you continue, and is refunded if it finds fewer than 3 real issues your team agrees are worth fixing (pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). Book it through the demo page, or keep scoring single pairs in the free audit. What the product includes is in the AdAlign glossary entry. The step before launch is in how to QA ad creative before launch.
FAQ
How often should an account-wide audit run?
After every change to an ad, page or offer. Otherwise weekly for the highest-spend campaigns and monthly for the rest, as AdAlign's guide suggests for manual audits (audit guide).
Do I audit every responsive search ad combination?
Audit what served. Google's combinations report lists the combinations your responsive search ads showed, with impressions (combinations report). Check the common ones.
Does AdAlign change anything in the ad accounts?
No. Access is read-only OAuth. It reads ads, creatives, destination URLs and spend without editing a campaign, and page copy changes only where you install the AdAlign tag and publish a variant (AdAlign). Synced Google Ads data is purged within 30 days of disconnecting (privacy policy).
