How to Fix Ads That Get Clicks but No Conversions

The short answer: the CTR holds up and the conversions sit near zero. Check the tag before the page, and the page before a rebuild. Google Ads shows a tracking status for every conversion action, and "Unverified" or "Tag inactive" means the zero is a measurement gap, not a verdict on the page (Tag Assistant help). Once tracking holds, AdAlign is the pick for the next question. Its free audit scores the ad against its page. A score below 5 is where AdAlign counts the ad's spend as at risk (how it works), and the weakest dimension is named, so you change one thing and not the whole page. The steps: prove the conversion fires, prove where the click lands, clear the first screen, score the match, pick the smallest fix, measure, and rebuild only when the match is already strong.

Disclosure: I earn a commission if you buy AdAlign through a link on this page, and this page recommends it. Every claim about AdAlign links to AdAlign's own pages.

Order of suspicion:

  1. Read the zero before you trust it. In the conversions column, a broken tag and a weak page look like the same zero. For example, 1,000 clicks with 0 conversions and a "Tag inactive" status says nothing about the page. 1,000 clicks with 6 conversions and a "Recording" status is a 0.6% conversion rate (6 / 1,000 = 0.006), and now the page is a fair suspect. The statuses are Google's, from its Tag Assistant help.
  2. Start from the reports you already have. The Google Ads landing pages report lists every URL your ads sent people to. Meta's test events tool shows whether the pixel fires.
  3. Fix the measure before the first change. Conversion rate per ad and page pair, over the same number of days before and after. One change at a time, or the result belongs to none of them.

The AdAlign glossary entry covers the product. This page is a diagnosis, cheapest check first.

Seven checks, in order

1. Prove the conversion fires

In Google Ads, open Summary in the Goals menu, choose All conversions and read the Tracking status column. For an action marked "Unverified", "Tag inactive" or "Needs attention", hover over the status, select Troubleshoot and let Tag Assistant open your site (Tag Assistant help). Start from a landing page or the home page and walk to the conversion. Verified actions update after about 30 minutes and read "No recent conversions" until a real one arrives, then "Recording". With Google Tag Manager, enable the container for debugging first.

On Meta, open Events Manager, choose the data source, click Test events, open the site from there and complete the action (test events tool). LinkedIn and Reddit tags are covered in the guides to LinkedIn offers and Reddit pages.

2. Prove the click lands where you think

In Google Ads, open Campaigns, Insights & reports, Landing pages, then View expanded landing pages for the URLs people reached (landing pages report). A mobile-friendly click rate below 100% means the page failed Google's Mobile-Friendly test at least some of the time. AdAlign catches dead ends too. A page that answers 404 or 410, has no domain, has its certificate refused or calls itself "not found" comes back as a broken link, unscored and uncounted (analyze-ad reference). A broken URL is a one-line fix in the ad platform.

3. Clear whatever covers the first screen

Open the page on a phone, in a private window, as a new visitor. Count what sits on top: a cookie banner, a newsletter pop-up, an app-install prompt, a chat bubble over the button. That is a queue of requests before the page has said a word. AdAlign marks elements hidden behind a cookie or consent banner as obscured, and leaves them out of the score (analyze-ad reference). What the scorer cannot see, the visitor could not see either.

4. Score the match

Google's own help says it plainly. When someone clicks an ad, "they expect to land on a page that's relevant to what they saw in your ad", and if they do not find it immediately they are more likely to leave. Its example: an ad promising shoes at 20% off needs a page where people can buy the shoes at that price (Google Ads help). Put the pair through the free audit with the platform set. A free account adds the four-part breakdown and fixes.

5. Pick the smallest fix that closes the gap

AdAlign tags every fix with the side that changes: the landing page, the ad, the routing (send the ad to a better page) or both (analyze-ad reference). A routing fix is a URL change no designer has to touch. When ad and page disagree, the fix engine pulls the weaker side toward the stronger. A page offering a free 7-day trial is not weakened to match a vaguer ad button (the AdAlign Brain).

6. Change one thing, then measure

Apply one fix, score again, and compare the conversion rate over the same number of days on either side. If the score rose and the conversion rate did not, the match was not the problem.

7. Rebuild only when the match is already strong

Above 7 is strong alignment on AdAlign's scale (how it works). A pair up there that still does not convert has a page that agrees with its ad. So look at the offer, the price, the form or the audience. AdAlign's own disclaimer adds targeting, budget, competition and market conditions, which are the things a match score cannot see. That is when a page test or a rebuild earns its cost.

An agent for the ten worst pairs

On Scale and above, AdAlign's REST API lets an agent take the ten ads with the most clicks and the lowest conversion rate over 14 days, and score each. For every pair it returns the overall score, the weakest dimension, the top fix direction, any broken-link status, and the PageSpeed Insights score the response carries when available (analyze-ad reference). An illustrative excerpt:

{
  "overallScore": 4.5,
  "componentScores": { "messageMatch": 3, "aboveTheFoldContinuity": 4 },
  "fixes": [{ "direction": "change_routing", "priority": "HIGH" }],
  "pageSpeedData": { "performanceScore": 41 }
}

The human check: before the table goes anywhere, a person confirms each ad's conversion action is recording. The agent scores pages. It knows nothing about tags. And a person, not the agent, decides which side changes.

What Google's and Meta's pages warn about

  • Starting Tag Assistant on the conversion page itself, instead of a landing page or the home page (Tag Assistant help).
  • Closing Meta's test events page mid-test. Website activity is recorded only while it is open, and data can take 30 minutes or more to reach analytics (test events tool).

AdAlign's pilot terms protect the buyer. The paid pilot refunds the €1,500 if it surfaces fewer than 3 issues your team agrees are real, meaning a page that does not match its ad, a broken link or a drifted page (pricing). The same terms show what the product is built to go looking for, and a tag that never fires is not on that list. That is why step 1 uses Google's and Meta's own tools before AdAlign sees anything.

Free first, then AdAlign

For a handful of ads, these free tools settle it. When the pattern runs across an account, connect Meta and Google Ads to AdAlign read-only, and every live ad is scored against its page. For example, an ad that spent €700 last week and scores below 5 counts as €700 / 7 x 30 = €3,000 a month of spend at risk, the formula on AdAlign's homepage FAQ. Growth starts from €590 a month on an annual contract for up to €75k a month of total ad spend, after the paid pilot (pricing, checked on 27 October 2026). The AdAlign how-to walks through the connected setup.

Once the tags check out, score the ad with the most clicks and fewest conversions in the free audit. If its weakest dimension explains the gap, AdAlign, which pays me a commission when you buy it, finds the same gap on every other ad. The demo runs on your own accounts.

FAQ

How long until a fixed conversion tag shows as recording?

About 30 minutes after a Tag Assistant session, verified actions read "No recent conversions". They read "Recording" once a real conversion arrives (Tag Assistant help).

What AdAlign score means the page is not the problem?

Above 7, which AdAlign calls strong alignment (how it works). Below that, fix the match before anything else.

Should I change the ad or the page first?

The side AdAlign's fix names (analyze-ad reference). A healthy CTR says the ad is the stronger side, so the page usually moves toward it. If the ad points at the wrong page, change the URL.
