How to Report Marketing Results to Investors and a Board

The short answer: an investor asks how much of this would have happened anyway. A slide built on platform ROAS has no answer, because every platform grades its own results. Replace it with three lines an investor can audit: revenue the store booked, total marketing spend against it with your break-even line, and each channel's caused share from a causal read. For that third line I recommend Causality Engine, run once a quarter for €99 a read, or €396 for four on its checkup page (checked on 27 October 2026). The first finding is free at app.causalityengine.ai/start. The routine: take booked revenue from finance, total the spend and compare MER with break-even. Then read the quarter's GA4 export, and file the read with its receipts in the data room.

Disclosure: I founded Causality Engine and own it, and this page recommends it. Every claim about it links to Causality Engine's own pages.

What comes out of the deck, and what replaces it:

  1. Swap a stack of ROAS figures for one ratio. For example, a quarter with €412,000 of booked revenue and €118,000 of total marketing spend has a MER of 412,000 / 118,000 = 3.49. Set against a break-even of 2.57 worked out from margin, it says the quarter's marketing paid for itself with room to spare. One line, and an investor can recompute it.
  2. Use the numbers the board already sees elsewhere. Booked revenue comes from the same finance close as the rest of the pack, and spend from the invoices. Nothing on the marketing slide should disagree with the P&L page.
  3. Keep the method fixed between quarters. Same export, same read, same definitions. A board forgives a weak quarter. It does not forgive a changed yardstick.

The marketing slide, rebuilt

Line on the slideSourceHow an investor checks it
Booked revenueFinance close, or Shopify net salesTies to the P&L page
Total marketing spendPlatform invoices and agency feesTies to the cost lines
MER against break-evenRevenue over spend, margin-based break-evenRecomputed from the two lines above
Caused share per channelCausal read of the quarter's GA4 exportReceipts in the read, checked against the file
Data health per channelThe same readScores from 0 to 100, under 90 flagged
Channels too small to callThe same readUnder 1% of credit on both methods

The last two rows do more for credibility than any growth chart. A slide that says where the evidence is thin reads as a team that knows the difference.

Which line on last quarter's slide could an investor recompute?

Assembling it, quarter by quarter

  1. Lock the revenue definition. If the board sees net sales elsewhere, use net sales here. Shopify's sales report definitions give net sales as gross sales minus discounts minus sales reversals, and total sales as that plus tax, duties, shipping and fees. Pick one and footnote it.

  2. Set the break-even line from margin. Causality Engine's free break-even calculator takes order value, gross margin, shipping, fees and returns. It returns the break-even ROAS, which on total revenue over total spend is your break-even MER. Recompute it when margin moves, and say so on the slide.

  3. Export the quarter's paths. In GA4, open Advertising and the key event attribution paths report, and use Share this report to download it, as Google's paths report guide describes. Causality Engine's how-it-works page asks for 12 months or more. Export the trailing twelve months at each quarter close, and compare each read with the one before it.

  4. Run the read and copy three columns. Drop the file on the start page. The first finding is free and computed in your browser. Per channel, the full read returns the caused share next to last-click, a data-health score and a next step, with receipts that check every number against the export. Copy caused share, last-click share and data health into the slide's table.

  5. Pull the appendix with an agent, then check it. Google's read-only Google Analytics MCP server lets an AI agent query GA4 reports in plain language. It can draft the appendix table of the quarter's purchase revenue by default channel group. The human check: compare the agent's quarter total with the GA4 interface for the same dates, and with finance's booked revenue. Write the difference in a footnote rather than letting it surprise someone in the meeting.

  6. File the evidence. The read can be shared by link or exported, per Causality Engine's home page. Export it. The privacy policy says a pay-per-use analysis and its source data are deleted 30 days after your last visit, and a board pack outlives that. Put the export, the GA4 file and the read in the data room folder for the quarter.

Windows the board never sees

Every platform figure you leave out of the deck was counted on a window its seller chose. Google Ads counts a conversion up to 30 days after a click, 3 days after an engaged view and 1 day after an impression, per its conversion window article. Those are the defaults unless someone changes them. The company that set them is paid for each of those clicks and impressions. An investor reading a platform ROAS is reading that window without knowing it. The rebuilt slide removes the question by never asking a platform to report on itself.

What stays off the slide

Causality Engine's case studies report revenue lifts for named beta brands, among them 30% for Me Gorgeous in 2025. Those are the company's published results for those stores, and they are tempting to borrow. They are not a forecast for yours, and they do not belong in your board pack. Your own quarter-on-quarter change in caused share does, with its data health beside it.

Give no verdict on channels the read could not call, either. A channel under 1% of credit on both methods is too small to act on, per the how-it-works page. List it by name in the too-small row and move on.

Put the read in the pack

Causality Engine, which I founded, supplies the caused-share column and its receipts. The first finding is free on the start page, and each quarterly read is €99 once, refundable within 30 days, per the pricing page (checked on 27 October 2026). For a business whose budgets move weekly across 8 or more channels, the same page offers Pro at €299 a month with automated GA4 ingestion. The quarter's numbers are then already there when the pack is due. If the CFO reviews the slide before the board does, How to Explain Attribution to Your CFO covers that conversation. The product is described in the Causality Engine entry.

FAQ

How often should investors see channel-level numbers?

Once a quarter fits the board cycle, with the same method each time. Causality Engine's checkup page builds its routine around the quarter close, before the next quarter's budget is set.

What do I say when a channel's data health is low?

Say it on the slide: the read for that channel is weaker, so budget moves there in steps. The how-it-works page sets that rule below a score of 90.

Can investors see the underlying data?

Share the read link with whoever needs it while the analysis is live, and keep the exported copy in the data room for later. Data handling for the paid read is set out in the privacy policy. The pricing page lists EU data residency under Pro.
