The short answer: if your partners are content sites that place your banners, plan on Pro at $139 a month rather than Starter at $89, because every banner view you track counts against the monthly request allowance and Starter's 10,000 requests cover 10,000 / 30 = 333.3 tracked events a day (monthly billing, checked on 26 October 2026 on the pricing page). The steps: answer the free setup questionnaire, pick the link style and cookie rule, park the program on your own subdomain, build the commission, install click and sale tracking, create the banners, and test the whole path as an affiliate before inviting a publisher.
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
Publishers are partners with pages, not followers: review sites, comparison blogs and newsletters with a sidebar. They want a banner that fits their layout, a link that survives their CMS and a report of what each placement earned. Post Affiliate Pro's six link styles and its range of banner types are built for that model. What the product is and costs overall is in the Post Affiliate Pro glossary entry.
Before the trial starts:
- Count the requests your banners create. Tracking requests include impressions, events, clicks and sales, per the pricing page. For example, 15 publishers each showing a tracked banner 400 times a day is 15 x 400 x 30 = 180,000 requests a month before a single click; on Starter that is 170,000 over, 17 x $5 = $85 extra, so $174 against Pro's $139.
- The publishers you already know. List the sites that already send you referral traffic and the ad sizes their layouts take. Those are your first banners and your first invitations.
- A baseline from your own analytics. Note referral visits and orders from those sites for the last 30 days, before any banner exists. The program has to beat that, not zero.
Step 1: Answer the setup questionnaire
After signing up for the 30-day trial, which needs no credit card per the trial page, you receive an email with a questionnaire. Every new account is entitled to a free integration and setup service; if you take it, the vendor's team handles the technical steps and you can focus on banners, emails and branding, per the setup service article. On Starter that service is capped at two hours.
Step 2: Pick the link style and the cookie rule
Set the main site URL and the default linking method under Configuration, Tracking Settings, per the initial configuration guide. For publishers, New style links put the parameter in the query string; Mod Rewrite links such as /ref/affiliate007 work even where the click script cannot run, if you can change your server's configuration. Anchor links, which the guide lists as a standard type, are marked as not suitable for Instagram.
Then, under Configuration, Cookies, set the cookie lifetime and decide on overwriting: leave Overwrite cookie off for first-click credit, switch it on for last-click. Whichever you choose, write it into your program terms so publishers know which click counts. Set affiliate approval to manual under Affiliate signup, so you vet each site before it carries your banner.
Step 3: Park it on your own subdomain
Under Configuration, Domain settings, replace the default postaffiliatepro.com address with your own. The same guide suggests partners.yourdomain.com and warns against affiliate.yourdomain.com or affiliates.yourdomain.com, because ad blockers often block scripts on those names and tracking suffers.
Step 4: Build the commission
Each account starts with a campaign called First campaign; rename it and open Commission settings, per the commission guide. A per-sale percentage is the usual base. If your strongest publishers deserve more, the Commission groups feature gives them a higher rate in the same campaign; it is included from Pro and costs $19 a month as a Starter add-on, per the pricing page. Per-click and per-thousand-impression commissions exist too, but switch them on only if you can police the traffic.
Step 5: Install click and sale tracking
Copy the click tracking script from Tools, Integration, Clicks tracking and place it in your site's footer so it runs on every page, then pick your cart or payment gateway under Tools, Integration, Sales/Leads Tracking, per the integration guide. The click script sets a visitor ID; the sale request sends it back with the order, and the system credits the affiliate.
Step 6: Create the banners
In Banners, Banners manager, add the formats your publishers asked for: image banners with HTML code, text links, HTML banners and promo emails, each with its own destination URL and campaign, per the promo materials guide. Send each banner to the page that converts for that audience, not always the homepage.
Step 7: Test the whole path as an affiliate
Sign up as an affiliate on your mini-site, approve yourself, log in, place a banner on a test page and click it. The click should appear in Transactions, Clicks list within 5 minutes; then buy something and check Transactions, Commissions, per the testing guide. If nothing appears after 15 minutes, the guide sends you to support with the details.
An agent step: diagnose the missing commission
Open Tools, Integration, AI assistants (MCP) and connect Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT through OAuth with read-only access, per the AI assistant page. When a test order or a publisher's order shows no commission, ask the assistant why that order did not create one; the page lists order diagnosis among its uses. It returns an explanation, and a person decides the fix, because with read-only access it cannot change a setting, and nothing should change on a live program without someone reading the cause first.
Mistakes the guides point at
- Anchor links on Instagram. The configuration guide marks them unsuitable there.
- A subdomain named affiliate. The same guide warns that ad blockers often stop scripts on that name, so clicks go unrecorded.
- Testing with real affiliates. Use the pre-set affiliate or your own signup, as the integration guide does.
When publishers start sending traffic
Every banner view you choose to track draws on the same monthly allowance as a sale, so the impression report that makes a publisher program look busy is also what moves the account from $89 on Starter to $139 on Pro, per the pricing page as checked on 26 October 2026. Check the Traffic info report, which predicts the month's requests, in the second week of each month.
Then measure against the baseline. Compare orders from each publisher's site with the 30 days before their banner went live, using the Top banners and Top affiliates reports beside your own analytics. A publisher whose referral orders did not rise is being paid for sales that were already arriving.
FAQ
Which link style should a publisher program use?
New style links are the plain choice; Mod Rewrite suits sites where the click script cannot be added, if you control the server; DirectLink credits all traffic from a publisher's own site and is not recommended as the default, per the initial configuration guide.
How long until a test click shows up?
Up to 5 minutes for the click and the same for the commission; after 15 minutes with nothing, contact support, per the testing guide.
Can I pay publishers per thousand impressions?
Yes. CPM commissions exist on every plan once the feature is switched on under Configuration, Features, per the commission guide.
