The short answer: if your inbox mixes agency threads, vendor pitches, stakeholder questions and tool notifications, Superhuman Mail Starter at $25 a member a month billed annually covers the whole triage setup, Split Inbox, Auto Labels, reminders and Snippets; only Auto Drafts and the MCP connection need Business at $33, per the Mail plans page, checked on 26 October 2026. The steps: switch on the default splits, build three or four of your own, let Auto Labels send pitches and marketing mail to Other, set Auto Reminders, write team Snippets for the replies you send every week, and only then decide whether drafts by AI are worth the upgrade.

A marketing lead's inbox is four inboxes pretending to be one. The agency waiting for feedback, the CFO asking about spend, a vendor's third follow-up and forty notifications all arrive in the same column, and the urgent buries the important. The job here is to sort the mail before you read it, so the people who are waiting on you get answered first. What Superhuman includes and costs is in the Superhuman entry.

Set up before day one:

  1. The cost of the year. Starter is $300 a year per member billed annually, against 12 x $30 = $360 billed monthly; Business is $396 against 12 x $40 = $480, per the pricing article. For one person, testing Starter for a month first costs $30.
  2. The groups you already know. Write down who waits on you: the agency's domain, the leadership team, two or three key partners, and the tools whose notifications you need. Those become your splits. Superhuman runs on top of your Gmail or Outlook account, so the mail does not move.
  3. The end-of-day count. For a week before switching, count the threads still unanswered in your inbox at 18:00. That is the number to bring down.

Step 1: Turn on the default splits

On desktop, click Settings, then Split Inbox Library, select a split and click Turn on Split Inbox, per the Default Split Inbox article. Start with Important and Other, VIP, Team and Calendar. Add someone to VIP with Cmd+K or Ctrl+K, then Add to Split Inbox. Each split shows its total conversations, which becomes your daily count.

Step 2: Build your own splits

Click Build Your Own in the Split Inbox Library and define each split with search criteria such as from:, to: or subject:, combined with AND and OR, per Create Your Own Split Inbox. For example: Agency, from the agency's domain; Partners, from three named domains; Approvals, with a subject that contains "approval". The article recommends three to seven splits in total. More than that creates places to check, which is the problem you started with.

Step 3: Let Auto Labels clear the noise

Under Settings, Auto Labels, the built-in labels Marketing, News, Pitch and Social send their mail to Other by default, per the Auto Labels article. If you buy from vendors and want their pitches in view, open Pitch and untick Always move Pitch conversations to Other. A new label applies to incoming mail and to the last 14 days. Custom labels written as AI prompts are a Business feature, with a maximum of 10.

Step 4: Set reminders so nothing waits on you twice

Open Settings, Reminders, set a default reminder time, and choose All messages that need a follow-up, so Superhuman's AI decides from your last outgoing message which threads to bring back, per the reminders article. Tick Weekdays Only if Saturday reminders are not welcome. For a single thread, hit H for Remind Me; by default it returns only if nobody replies, per the Remind Me article.

Step 5: Write the replies you send every week as Snippets

Hit Cmd+K or Ctrl+K, then Create Snippet, for the messages you write again and again: feedback on an agency draft, a polite no to a vendor, your booking link. Put anything that must be filled in between curly brackets, such as {deadline}, and Superhuman warns you before sending if it is still there, per the Snippets article. Share the good ones with your team. Snippets metrics show sends, opens and replies for each one.

Step 6: Add drafting by agent, if Business is worth it

On Business, Settings, Auto Drafts has two switches: Follow-ups, which drafts a nudge about an hour before a reminder returns, and Responses, which drafts a reply as soon as a message that needs one arrives, per the Auto Drafts article. Start with Follow-ups only. Feed it a Knowledge Base of your briefs and booking rules under Settings, Personalization.

For a morning brief, connect the Superhuman Mail MCP server to Claude from Claude's connector directory, which needs Business, Ask AI enabled and the Superhuman Chrome extension, per the MCP article. Superhuman's MCP page suggests prompts such as "Summarize emails in my VIP split inbox and flag anything that needs my input." The human check: the agent drafts and you send. Keep drafts in Superhuman for review rather than asking Claude to send, and read every draft that commits to a date, a budget or a deliverable before it goes. Superhuman leaves a placeholder when it cannot infer a fact, and warns you if you try to send with one still in place.

Step 7: Count again after a month

Read the unanswered threads at 18:00 for a week and set the average beside your baseline. Check the split totals: if Other is growing and Important is shrinking, the labels are working. Check Snippets metrics too; a reply that is sent often and answered rarely needs rewriting.

What Superhuman's help pages warn about

  • Too many splits slow you down. Both Split Inbox articles put the ceiling at seven.
  • Responses switches off Instant Reply. Enabling Auto Drafts for Responses turns Instant Reply off, per the Auto Drafts article.
  • An edited draft stops updating. Once you change an Auto Draft, it becomes an ordinary draft and is no longer refreshed.
  • Snippets stay with the account. They cannot be transferred between accounts, per the Snippets article.

Starter first, and why Responses stays off a while

Steps 1 to 5 run on Starter, and a month of them shows whether your problem was sorting or writing. If it was sorting, you are done at $25 a month billed annually, per the Mail plans page. Switching on Auto Drafts for Responses also switches off Instant Reply, so the reply path you have been using gives way to the Business feature you now pay $8 a month more for, and its drafts become the default way you answer before anyone has checked a single one. Leave Responses off until Follow-ups have earned your trust.

FAQ

Does Superhuman work with Outlook?

Yes. Superhuman Mail is built for teams on Gmail or Outlook, per the Mail page.

Can Claude send email from my Superhuman account?

It can draft and send through the MCP server once connected, per the MCP page. Whether it should send is your decision; drafts reviewed in Superhuman are the safer default.

How many custom Auto Labels can I create?

The article sets no overall limit, but no more than 10 can be written as AI prompts, a Business feature, per the Auto Labels article.
