How to Use lemlist to Build a Multichannel Sequence

The short answer: connect your mailbox, add a signature and the SPF, DKIM, DMARC and tracking records, warm it with lemwarm until the Warmup Score passes 90 and the stabilisation period ends, set a low daily limit, then build the sequence, choose senders and settings, import leads and launch from the Launch tab.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

lemlist's help centre is unusually specific about patience. A new mailbox, by its own guidance, spends close to two months warming before it sends a cold email, and even then starts at a handful a day. Plan the calendar around that, not around the campaign date. For what lemlist is and what each plan costs, see the lemlist glossary entry.

Before step one

  • An account. The trial runs 14 days with the Multichannel features except in-app calls, and the Email plan starts at $69 a month for 50,000 emails on monthly billing, per the pricing page (checked on 23 October 2026).
  • A supported mailbox. Google, Microsoft or an IMAP/SMTP inbox. The connection guide rules out transactional services such as SendGrid, Mailgun, Mailjet and Amazon SES, because lemlist needs a real inbox to track replies.
  • Access to the domain's DNS, for the records in step 2.
  • A view on who you may contact. In the UK, the ICO's electronic mail marketing guidance treats company addresses and sole traders differently, and says direct messages on social networks fall under the same rules as email. EU countries set their own lines. Check the markets you target.

1. Connect the mailbox

Click your profile icon, then Settings, then Sending settings, and click + Connect email address, as the connection guide shows. Accept the rules for multiple addresses if prompted, then choose Google, Microsoft or Other (SMTP/IMAP). For Google, lemlist connects through OAuth and the Gmail API, and every permission box must be ticked or the connection fails. A green check in the Status column confirms it.

2. Finish the technical setup

The technical setup guide covers three things. Add an email signature under Sending settings, imported from the mailbox or written fresh, and insert it with the {{signature}} variable. Publish SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the domain. Then set a custom tracking domain. The guide puts the whole job at 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how fast DNS changes propagate. Your login address and sending address can differ.

3. Warm the mailbox with lemwarm

lemwarm's target should equal the volume the mailbox will send once live, which the lemwarm guide puts at 30 to 40 a day for a new mailbox. Ramp-up adds one email a day, so reaching the target takes about 40 days, followed by 14 days of stabilisation at the target. Keep lemlist's campaign sending at zero until both are done and the Warmup Score is 90 or more. After launch, lemwarm drops to a residual 10 a day that keeps reporting on reputation.

4. Set the sending limits

Open Settings, then Sending limits, pick the address and enter the daily limit. Changes save automatically. The sending limits guide sets three caps, checked in order:

  • A domain less than a month old stays under 100 emails a day across all its mailboxes.
  • A mailbox still in its 14 days of stabilisation sends no cold email.
  • A live mailbox starts at 10 to 15 a day, adds 5 a week and stops at 25 to 30.

Above all three, warm-up plus campaigns stays at or below 50 a day per mailbox, counted on a rolling 24 hours. When you need more volume, add warmed mailboxes.

5. Create the campaign and build the sequence

From the left menu, click Campaigns, then Create campaign, and you land on the Sequence tab, per the campaign guide. Click Add step. The step picker has a Steps tab for emails, LinkedIn steps, calls and tasks, and a Conditions tab for branches on lead data or behaviour. A behaviour condition such as Opened email cannot be the first step, since no lead has acted yet. The lemAgent panel on the left can draft or improve the sequence from a prompt.

Name the campaign after its goal or audience, then open each email step and pick its senders under Select senders for your campaign. Teammates' mailboxes appear under their names. If lemlist flags a sender, Show errors explains why.

6. Configure the settings

Click the gear icon at the top of the campaign and work through the sections the campaign guide lists:

  • Automation. What happens on a click, a reply or a booked meeting, whether to pause other contacts from the same company, and whether AI scores replies and handles out-of-office messages.
  • Senders. Matching senders to lead ownership, and matching the recipient's email provider.
  • Tracking. Reply, open and click tracking, each on or off.
  • Schedules & launch. Sending days and hours, and the minute delay between first emails to different leads.
  • General. Tags, a shareable link, and what happens when a contact clicks unsubscribe.

7. Import the leads

In the Lead list tab, click Import new leads. The campaign guide lists the options: lemlist's people database, your contact lists, CSV, a CRM, signals, LinkedIn through the browser extension, manual entry, or advanced imports from another campaign, Zapier or the API. Click any lead to see their data and every other campaign they are in.

8. Review and launch

Open the Launch tab, the last part of the campaign guide. Preview the sequence for individual leads, confirm the schedule and conditions, and personalise a step for a single lead if it earns it. Then click Launch for X leads and check the recap before confirming.

What lemlist's guidance says not to do

  • Warm to the wrong number. The lemwarm guide warns against a fixed default: warming to 16 a day a mailbox meant to send 35 trains it for the wrong job.
  • Raise limits to get volume. The limits guide says add mailboxes; each new one starts from zero and goes through the full ramp.
  • Reset an override casually. In the Launch tab, Reset Override deletes a lead's custom content at once, with no undo.
  • Trust the limit alone. Providers such as Google can still throttle a mailbox on reputation, whatever lemlist allows.

Unsubscribes are managed under Settings, Unsubscribe: Do not contact blocks a person on every channel, while a channel-level unsubscribe blocks one email address, phone number or LinkedIn URL, per the unsubscribe guide.

Choosing between tools? lemlist vs Mailshake compares lemlist with a simpler email-and-phone option.

FAQ

How many emails a day should one mailbox send?

Start at 10 to 15, add 5 a week, stop at 25 to 30, and keep warm-up plus campaigns at or below 50 a day, per lemlist's sending limits guide.

Can I run a campaign while a mailbox is warming up?

Not a cold one. The lemwarm guide keeps campaign sending at zero through ramp-up and stabilisation, then runs both side by side, with lemwarm at 10 a day.

Does lemlist count the sending limit per calendar day?

No. The sending limits guide says it counts on a rolling 24 hours, so emails sent between 1 PM on Tuesday and 1 PM on Wednesday fall in the same period.
