Kit vs beehiiv: A Creator Business or a Newsletter Business

The short answer: when the newsletter is the product, sold to readers and sponsors and grown through recommendations, beehiiv is the stronger fit: it is free up to 2,500 subscribers, and its Lite plan takes a 0% cut of paid subscriptions for $59 a month at 1,000 subscribers on monthly billing (beehiiv pricing). When the newsletter feeds a business that sells courses, coaching or products through automated sequences and connected apps, Kit is built for that work (Kit developer docs).
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
A gap in the evidence: on 26 October 2026 Kit's pricing page and help centre answered with a security check rather than their content, so this page carries no Kit price. What Kit does is taken from its developer documentation, which loaded as normal.
Before you migrate a newsletter:
- Put the platform cost against paid revenue. For example, 150 paying readers at $7 a month bring in 150 x $7 = $1,050. beehiiv Lite at 2,500 subscribers is $79 a month and takes 0% of subscription revenue (beehiiv pricing), so the platform costs $79 / $1,050 = 7.5% of it. Run the same sum with Kit's tier for your list.
- Find out where your readers come from today. Export subscribers with their sign-up source. If other newsletters already send you readers, beehiiv's recommendation network is on its free plan; if readers arrive through your courses or products, Kit's sequences and purchase records matter more.
- Choose the number you will report each month. Paid conversion rate for a subscription newsletter, sponsor revenue per issue for an ad-funded one, sequence-to-sale rate for a creator business. Record it before the move.

The differences that count
Who the platform is built around
beehiiv's plan cards are about the publication: recommendations, ad monetization, polls, A/B tests, webinars and coaching on Pro, and up to 3 publications on Lite and 10 on Pro (beehiiv pricing). Kit's documentation is about the creator's business: sequences that walk a subscriber through a launch, purchases synced from a store, and a Kit App Store for tools that fill gaps between services (App Store overview). The same 5,000 readers can sit happily on either; what you sell them decides.
The free plan and the branding line
beehiiv's free plan is unusually large for a newsletter tool: 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, landing pages and the recommendation network. Its branding stays on until Pro, which starts at $109 a month for 1,000 subscribers on monthly billing (beehiiv pricing). If a clean footer matters to your brand, budget Pro, not Lite.
How far an assistant may go on each plan
beehiiv's MCP server is open to every plan with no waitlist; on Free it reads, and creating or editing needs a paid plan (beehiiv MCP). Kit's is on its paid plans and maps the whole v4 API, with sending and deleting held behind explicit confirmation (Kit MCP).

An agent sets up the welcome for recommended readers
The beehiiv MCP connects Claude, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex to the account, and its tool list covers segments, automation workflows and emails (beehiiv MCP). On a paid plan, ask the assistant to build a segment of readers who joined through recommendations in the last 30 days and to draft a three-email welcome for them that explains what the newsletter covers. Then a person opens the automation in beehiiv, reads each email, checks the segment conditions and switches it on. Keep that last step human: an automation that greets the wrong people sends to all of them.
The free way to decide
beehiiv's free plan is enough to run the next month of issues for up to 2,500 readers, and its Lite and Pro trials ask for no card (pricing). Kit's developer docs, which are open to anyone, show whether its sequences and app ecosystem match how you sell. Spend nothing until both checks are done.
Next to each paid plan, beehiiv prints an average ad income, "Avg. $39/mo" at the smaller list sizes (pricing). An earnings estimate beside a price makes the price feel smaller. beehiiv collects the plan fee on every billing date whether a sponsor books your issue or not; the estimate sets a fixed cost against an income nobody has promised you. Budget the plan as if ad income were zero and treat any that arrives as a bonus.
Choose Kit if your job is
- Selling courses, coaching or products through automated sequences.
- Feeding store orders into subscriber records and targeting on them.
- Connecting creator apps, and letting an assistant work across the full API on a paid plan.
Choose beehiiv if your job is
- Charging readers for the newsletter itself without a platform cut.
- Growing through recommendations from other publications, starting on the free plan.
- Running several publications from one account.
FAQ
Does beehiiv take a share of paid subscriptions?
Its pricing page lists a 0% take rate on paid subscriptions from the Lite plan up (beehiiv pricing). The page does not cover payment processing, so ask about it during the trial.
Can the beehiiv MCP edit content on the free plan?
No. Free plans get read-only MCP access; write actions such as creating or editing content need a paid plan (beehiiv MCP).
Why does this page show no Kit prices?
Kit's pricing page returned a security check instead of prices on 26 October 2026, so its figures could not be read. Check kit.com/pricing directly with your list size.
