QuillBot vs ChatGPT: Rework Approved Copy or Write New

The short answer: when the copy already exists and has been approved, QuillBot is the tool with rails: its free plan rewrites up to 100 words at a time in two modes, and Premium removes the word limit, opens the eight other modes in its guide and lets you freeze brand terms in the modes that support it (free versus Premium, modes). When the copy does not exist yet, or needs reshaping by instruction, ChatGPT does more: there is a free version, and Plus costs $20 a month, billed monthly (ChatGPT Plus, checked on 26 October 2026).
Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.
The work behind this search is usually adaptation: one product description turned into an email line, an ad, a LinkedIn post. Both tools do it. QuillBot changes the words you give it within limits you set. ChatGPT does whatever the prompt asks, including things you did not mean.
Test before you pay:
- Measure the free limit against your real text. For example, a 300-word product page is 3 passes of 100 words on QuillBot's free plan, each in Standard or Fluency only (free versus Premium); on ChatGPT's free version it is one prompt.
- Use the copy that legal already approved. Rewriting approved text keeps the claims you can defend. Paste it into both, ask each for a shorter version for an ad, and compare what changed.
- Judge by what the editor changes. Count the edits your editor makes to each tool's version. Fewer edits, same meaning, wins.
Same paragraph, two tools
| Control you want | QuillBot | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| How far the rewrite goes | Fixed modes, from Fluency, which changes least, to Creative, which can shift the meaning | Whatever the prompt says, from a light edit to a full rewrite |
| Words that must not change | Freeze Words: Premium, or one word on a free account when logged in | Instructions in the prompt or a project; no hard lock |
| A house style | Custom modes on Premium; a team style guide and dictionary on Team Plans | Project instructions and files |
| Seeing options side by side | Compare Modes on Premium | Ask for several versions |
| Where it runs | Website, browser extensions and a free Word add-in | Web, desktop and mobile apps |
| Automation | No API | API billed separately from Plus |
From QuillBot's help articles on modes, Freeze Words, Team Plans, the Word add-in and the API question, and OpenAI's Plus article and Projects article, read on 26 October 2026.
Three things that set them apart
Rails, or an open road
QuillBot's modes put a ceiling on change. Fluency fixes grammar and makes the fewest changes; Shorten and Expand move the word count; Creative makes bold changes and may slightly change the meaning, QuillBot's own warning (modes). ChatGPT has no such ceiling. That is its strength for new copy and its risk for approved copy: a model asked to "tighten this" can add a claim nobody signed off.
Where each one lives
QuillBot sits in the browser and in Word, free to install, close to the text field (Word add-in). ChatGPT is a place you go to: a chat, a project, a canvas. For quick fixes inside a CMS, the extension wins on friction. For a morning of campaign copy, the chat wins on range.
Automation
QuillBot's help centre states that it has no API for business or consumer use (API question), so it stays a hands-on tool. ChatGPT runs inside projects, connected apps and, on Business, scheduled tasks and workspace agents (business pricing). If an agent will do the work, only one of these two can be in the pipeline.
Prices
QuillBot does not publish one price. Its help centre says Premium depends on your region and on monthly, quarterly or annual billing, with the local price shown at checkout (pricing article); the website and upgrade page returned a bot check to automated readers on 26 October 2026, so this page quotes no figure. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, monthly only, and Business is $25 per seat monthly or $20 a seat billed annually, checked on 26 October 2026 (ChatGPT Plus, business pricing).
That leaves you comparing a known price with an unknown one. QuillBot's model shows the Premium price only at checkout, set by your region, so the comparison you can make on paper ends at the feature list, and the number arrives at the moment you are already halfway through buying. Open checkout in a separate tab, note the price for the shortest period, and close it before deciding.
A ChatGPT project that learns from approved rewrites
Create a ChatGPT project for channel adaptations. Add the brand book as a file and a Google Drive folder of approved copy as a source, then write project instructions: keep every claim from the source, change length and tone only (Projects). Each time an editor approves an adaptation, save that response with Add to project sources, so the next request has better examples to copy.
The person stays in the loop at two points. Before saving, an editor checks the adaptation against the source line by line and saves only versions they would publish. Before publishing, the same editor reads the new draft against the approved original. QuillBot can then do the last, narrow pass: Fluency on the final version, with product names frozen.
Three paragraphs, no subscription
Run three paragraphs of approved copy through QuillBot's free Standard and Fluency modes and through ChatGPT's free version. QuillBot's free account allows limited daily paraphrases (modes); that is enough for this test. If neither saves the editor time, neither subscription will.
Rework or write
Choose QuillBot if your job is reworking text that already exists, quickly and with control over how much changes, especially for writers polishing English as a second language.
Choose ChatGPT if your job is producing new copy, or reshaping copy by instruction, with files and context the model can read.
The QuillBot entry covers its plans, and how to use QuillBot walks through freezing brand terms. ChatGPT has no entry here; its site is chatgpt.com.
FAQ
Is paraphrasing with QuillBot plagiarism?
Not when you rewrite your own work, per QuillBot. If you paraphrase someone else's text you still have to cite it, and QuillBot says it is not designed to bypass plagiarism checkers such as Turnitin (plagiarism article).
How many modes does QuillBot have?
Ten: Standard and Fluency on the free plan; Humanizer, Formal, Academic, Simple, Creative, Expand, Shorten and Custom on Premium (modes).
Can a team share one QuillBot setup?
Team Plans sell Premium seats in three bands, 2 to 10, 11 to 50 and 51 or more, and add a shared style guide, a dictionary, an admin panel and usage reports (Team Plans).
