The short answer: if you suspect Mailchimp's free plan is too small for a list of 2,000, the plan page confirms it: Mailchimp stops at 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, while Sender gives its free plan 2,500 subscribers and 15,000 emails a month (Mailchimp plans, Sender pricing, checked on 24 October 2026). Choose Sender if your job is a newsletter plus order emails for a small business on a tight budget. Choose Mailchimp if you need a wide integration catalogue, store connections beyond the big platforms, or more seats than Sender's lower tiers give.

Disclosure: I may earn a commission through some links on this site. It does not change what this page says.

The two tools cover the same ground for a small team: a drag and drop builder, automation, signup forms, popups and landing pages. Sender changes the price curve. Its free plan goes ten times further on contacts, its paid plans are cheaper at every list size checked here, and it lists transactional email on the free plan. Mailchimp charges more and gives you the larger ecosystem.

Rule of thumb:

  1. Free until 2,500, if you can live with a footer. For example, 2,000 subscribers x 4 newsletters = 8,000 emails a month, inside Sender's free allowance of 15,000. On Mailchimp the same list sits in the 1,501 to 2,500 tier, where Essentials costs $45 a month, or $540 a year (Mailchimp pricing).
  2. Move the list you already have. Mailchimp exports subscribed, unsubscribed, non-subscribed and cleaned contacts as CSV files (export guide). Sender takes .csv, .txt and .xlsx files up to 64MB and asks you to certify that every contact opted in (import guide), so upload the subscribed file only.
  3. Count seats before features. Sender's free plan has 1 seat and its Standard plan 3; Mailchimp has 1 on Free, 3 on Essentials and 5 on Standard.
  4. Read the first two sends against the last two. Compare click rate and unsubscribes on Sender's first two campaigns with Mailchimp's last two to the same people. A drop there matters more than any price row.

Where the difference sits

The free plan is ten times larger

Sender's free plan holds 2,500 subscribers against Mailchimp's 250, and sends 15,000 emails a month against 500, per the Sender pricing page and Mailchimp's plans article. It also includes a 14-day Pro trial and no card. The price of that generosity is a Sender footer on every email and one login.

Order emails without a second contract

Sender lists transactional emails among the features of its free plan. Mailchimp sells transactional email as its own product, in blocks of 25,000 emails at $20 a block for the first 20 blocks, on top of a Mailchimp marketing plan (transactional pricing). For a shop that wants receipts and newsletters from one sender name, that is a real line on the invoice.

What the next tier costs

Sender's Standard plan sends 12 times your subscriber count and Professional 24 times, with no daily limits (pricing). Mailchimp's Essentials sends 10 times the tier and Standard 12 times (plans article). At equal list sizes Sender's Professional plan, with 10 seats, costs less than Mailchimp's Standard, with 5.

The monthly bill

USD on monthly billing, checked on 24 October 2026 on the Sender pricing page and the Mailchimp pricing page. Mailchimp figures are for the tier containing the list size; seat counts are from both plan tables.

If you haveSenderMailchimp
2,000 subscribers, one person, a footer is fineFree, $0Essentials at 1,501 to 2,500 contacts, $45
2,500 subscribers, three people, no footerStandard, $27Essentials, $45
5,000 subscribers, five peopleProfessional, $79, with 10 seatsStandard at 2,501 to 5,000 contacts, $100
10,000 subscribers, three peopleStandard, $69Essentials at 5,001 to 10,000 contacts, $110
10,000 subscribers, eight peopleProfessional, $127Premium, $350, the only plan above 5 seats

Sender's annual billing takes 30% off the first year for first-time users (Sender pricing); Mailchimp offers 15% off for 12 months from 5,001 contacts. Neither discount survives the first renewal, so compare the monthly column.

An assistant that drafts, and a switch it cannot flip

Sender's MCP server connects Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to your account through https://mcp.sender.net/mcp. Ask the assistant to audit your automations and draft a workflow for subscribers with no opens in 90 days. Sender's guide is clear about the guard rails: workflows are created inactive, activation is a separate step that runs a pre-flight checklist, and campaigns are never sent through the connection at all. So the human check is built in. The owner of the list reads the draft in Sender, runs the checklist and switches it on. The assistant can only do what that user's role allows.

Sender's pricing page carries a savings calculator that compares it with Mailchimp: at 5,000 subscribers it shows $100 a month against $39. The figures match both pricing pages, but the vendor that wins the comparison chose the comparison: Mailchimp Standard at $100, not Essentials at $75.

Choose Sender if your job is

  • Running a newsletter for up to 2,500 subscribers at no cost, with a footer.
  • Sending order confirmations and campaigns from one account on a small budget.
  • Giving 10 people access on Professional for less than Mailchimp's 5-seat plan.

Choose Mailchimp if your job is

  • Connecting a store on Magento, PrestaShop, Big Cartel or another platform its store guide lists.
  • Working inside the 300+ integrations its pricing page lists on every paid plan.
  • Giving a large team unlimited seats on Premium.

FAQ

Does Sender's free plan add branding?

Yes. The pricing page says free plan emails contain Sender branding; the Standard plan, from $9 a month for 500 subscribers, removes it.

Is there a daily sending limit?

Not on Sender, whose plan table lists no daily limits on any plan. Mailchimp's free plan caps sending at 250 emails a day within its 500 a month (plans article).

Can Sender's AI connection send campaigns?

No. Its MCP guide says campaigns are never sent through the connection, and workflows arrive inactive until a person activates them in Sender.
