SendPulse vs Mailchimp: Chat Apps Beside Email, or Email Alone

The short answer: if a large share of your customer questions arrive as Instagram or WhatsApp messages, you are right to look past Mailchimp. SendPulse runs chatbots on those apps next to its email product, and its email Standard plan costs $52 a month on monthly billing for 5,000 subscribers with unlimited sends, against $100 for Mailchimp Standard at 2,501 to 5,000 contacts (SendPulse pricing, Mailchimp pricing, checked on 24 October 2026). If email is your only channel and you run many automations, Mailchimp's Standard plan allows up to 200 flows, where SendPulse Standard allows 10.

SendPulse is a set of products under one login: email, chatbots for messaging apps, SMS, web push, pop-ups, a CRM, websites and online courses, each with its own price. Mailchimp is one marketing product, email first, with SMS as a paid add-on. The comparison only gets interesting if you need more than email.
Before you add a second channel:
- Put the email bills side by side first. For example, at 5,000 subscribers SendPulse Standard is $52 a month and Mailchimp Standard $100, so $100 - $52 = $48 a month, or $576 a year, before any chatbot is switched on (SendPulse pricing, Mailchimp pricing).
- Count where people already write to you. Take last month's Instagram and WhatsApp messages and last month's replies to your newsletter. If the messages outnumber the replies, the chatbot is the channel you are missing.
- Count the automations you run today. SendPulse allows 5 automated flows on its free email plan, 10 on Standard and 50 on Pro. If you run 15 flows now, Standard is not your plan.
- Decide how you will see chat turn into email. SendPulse puts chatbot contacts who share an email or phone number into a mailing list named after the bot, tagged with the app they came from (data guide). That list's growth each week is your measure.
Start with what is free
Both have a free email plan, and SendPulse's homepage calls its own free plan one "with no time limit" (homepage). Connect one chatbot on the free Basic plan to the channel where people already write to you, ask for an email address inside the flow, and run it for a month while your newsletter stays where it is. If the bot's mailing list does not grow, you have your answer without moving anything.
What each one documents
| Attribute | SendPulse | Mailchimp | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free email plan | Up to 500 subscribers, 15,000 emails | 250 contacts, 500 sends a month | SendPulse plan basics, Mailchimp plans |
| Sends on paid plans | Unlimited | 10, 12 or 15 times the contact tier | Same pages |
| Automated flows | 5 free, 10 Standard, 50 Pro, unlimited Enterprise | Up to 4 steps on Essentials, up to 200 flows on Standard | SendPulse pricing, Mailchimp pricing |
| Users | 3 on Standard, 10 on Pro | 3 on Essentials, 5 on Standard | Same two pricing pages |
| Messaging apps | Chatbots for Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, TikTok and Viber | Not part of the marketing plans | SendPulse homepage |
| SMS | A separate SendPulse product | Paid add-on in select countries | Same pages |
| Integrations | Make, Zapier, Shopify and WordPress in the plan table, plus API and webhooks | 300+ integrations on every paid plan | Same two pricing pages |
| AI agent access | MCP server, free to connect | Generative AI on Standard and Premium | SendPulse MCP |
Three differences that decide it
The messaging apps are the product
SendPulse's free Basic chatbot plan covers 3 bots, up to 500 subscribers and 10,000 messages a month across them, and its Pro chatbot plan starts at $9.60 a month billed annually for 500 subscribers (chatbot pricing). It is an official WhatsApp Business API provider, and from 1 October 2026 Meta charges for replies inside the 24-hour service window at the Utility template rate of the destination country, with 1,000 a month per bot free. Mailchimp's marketing plans list email and SMS; chatbots for messaging apps are not among their features.
Unlimited sends, counted flows
SendPulse lifts the send cap on every paid email plan and counts automated flows instead: 10 on Standard, 50 on Pro (pricing). Mailchimp does the opposite. It caps monthly sends at a multiple of your contact tier and lets Standard run up to 200 flows (pricing). A daily sender with three automations fits SendPulse; a weekly sender with twenty fits Mailchimp.
Separate price pages, one total
SendPulse publishes email, chatbots, SMS and the rest on separate pricing pages, so each page shows one module and the bill is the sum. Mailchimp prices one marketing plan, then adds SMS and transactional email on top. Add up the modules you will use in month three, not the one you start with.
The yearly difference by list size
Monthly billing in USD, checked on 24 October 2026 on the SendPulse pricing page and the Mailchimp pricing page, email plans only. Mailchimp's figure is the Standard tier containing the list size.
| Subscribers | SendPulse Standard | Mailchimp Standard | Difference over 12 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | $12 | $20 | $96 |
| 1,000 | $18 | $45 | $324 |
| 2,500 | $38 | $60 | $264 |
| 5,000 | $52 | $100 | $576 |
| 10,000 | $78 | $135 | $684 |
SendPulse's Pro email plan, with 50 flows and 10 users, costs $62.40 at 5,000 subscribers (pricing); yearly billing takes 20% off and six-month billing 10%. Mailchimp's Essentials plan is cheaper than its Standard, $75 at 2,501 to 5,000 contacts, but limits flows to 4 steps.
Handing the chat inbox to an agent, with approvals
SendPulse's MCP server at https://mcp.sendpulse.com/mcp lets an AI agent schedule, edit or cancel email campaigns before they send, review chatbot conversations, and manage CRM deals. A practical step: ask the agent to read last week's Instagram bot conversations, list the questions the bot could not answer, and tag the contacts who asked about delivery times, then schedule the delivery email you already drafted for that tag. SendPulse says the agent shows its plan for approval and asks again at key steps of a multistep job, and that it "may not always recognize its limitations". So a person approves the plan, checks a sample of the tagged contacts against their conversations, and only then approves the scheduling step. Connecting the server costs nothing on the SendPulse side, though your AI provider may charge.
A vendor that sells in modules earns more as you add them, so its pricing pages are built one channel at a time. The free bot test above tells you whether the second channel earns its line on the invoice.

Choose Mailchimp if your job is

- Adding text messages to email campaigns, in a country where Mailchimp's SMS add-on is available.
FAQ
Is SendPulse's free email plan limited in time?
No. Its homepage describes a free plan "with no time limit", and the knowledge base gives its size as up to 500 subscribers and 15,000 emails (plan basics).
Do chatbot contacts count toward the email plan?
They land in a mailing list named after the chatbot once they share an email address or phone number (data guide), and email plans are priced by the number of contacts, so plan the list size with them included.
Can Mailchimp send WhatsApp messages?
Its marketing pricing page lists SMS and MMS add-ons, not WhatsApp (pricing). For WhatsApp in the same account as email, SendPulse's chatbot product is the documented route.
