The short answer: if your training and product videos are mostly someone clicking through software, Camtasia is built for that job, and its Essentials plan, $179.88 a year, already includes quizzes and SCORM export for an LMS (Camtasia store, checked on 26 October 2026). If they are mostly someone explaining a policy, a release or a process, Synthesia gives you an AI presenter in 140+ languages from $14 a month billed yearly, $168 a year, with SCORM held back for Enterprise (Synthesia pricing, sharing article).

What tips it:
- The cost for the people who make videos. For example, three tutorial authors on Camtasia Essentials pay 3 x $179.88 = $539.64 a year; the Business licence, $198 a user a year, costs 3 x $198 = $594 and covers the Editor and Snagit (store, teams store). Synthesia's Starter and Pro plans each carry one editor with guests, so three authors means an Enterprise quote (Synthesia pricing).
- The raw material you produce now. Camtasia records screen, camera, microphone and system audio as separate tracks and keeps the cursor data, so the click path can be cleaned up afterwards (Camtasia). Synthesia starts from a script, a deck or a document (Synthesia).
- A number from support. How-to questions about the feature the video covers, counted for the month before it goes live and the month after.
These two get searched together because both make training video. They begin at opposite ends: one records reality and edits it, the other generates a presenter from text.
Two tools, row by row
| Synthesia | Camtasia | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts from | A script, a deck, a document or a URL | A recording of the screen, camera and audio |
| More than one author | Enterprise, quoted | Business, $198 a user a year |
| Cheapest paid plan | Starter, $19 a month or $168 a year | Starter, $39 a year, with the Editor watermarked |
| SCORM export | Enterprise | From Essentials, $179.88 a year |
| How a change is made | Edit the script, then generate the new footage | Delete words in the transcript through Audiate, from Essentials |
| AI presenter | 125+ stock avatars on Starter | 49 avatars on Pro, $599 a year |
| Languages for the AI voice | 140+ | 7 languages and 6 dialects for avatars |
| Who can edit | One editor plus guests below Enterprise | Per licence; individual plans are non-transferable |

The three differences that settle it
SCORM, priced
Camtasia lists quizzes and SCORM export on its Essentials plan, $179.88 a year (store). Synthesia's SCORM export, in 1.2 or 2004 with a completion threshold, is Enterprise only (sharing article). An L&D team whose courses must report into an LMS gets there for the price of one Camtasia subscription.
Languages
Synthesia's presenters speak 140+ languages (Synthesia). Camtasia's avatars cover seven languages and six dialects (avatar page), and its script generator writes in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish (script generator). For a Benelux and DACH audience Camtasia is enough. For a rollout to Asia it is not.
Keeping a video current
A Synthesia video embedded on a page updates everywhere it is embedded when you edit it, without a re-upload (sharing article). A Camtasia tutorial is a file: when the interface changes, someone records the new screens and exports again. Software that ships every two weeks makes that the bigger cost.
A year of each, in dollars
- Camtasia, individual plans billed yearly: Starter $39, Essentials $179.88, Create $249, Pro $599; Business $198 per user a year for up to 99 users, with licences that move between people (store, teams store).
- Synthesia: Basic free with a watermark; Starter $168 a year, or $19 a month billed monthly; Pro $708 a year, or $89 monthly; Enterprise quoted (Synthesia pricing).
All checked on 26 October 2026. Camtasia offers a 14-day money-back guarantee on every plan.
Release notes into a draft video, through Make
TechSmith's pages document AI inside Camtasia, script writing, voiceovers, dubbing and avatars, and none of the pages read for this comparison shows an API or automation connector, so the automated step sits on Synthesia's side. Synthesia's Make guide connects a trigger such as an RSS feed to the Synthesia module, maps fields like the title and the script into the video, and has you press Run once to test before scheduling; it needs a Synthesia account with API access (Make guide). Point the trigger at your release notes feed and map the headline and the summary into a template with a stock presenter. The human check: the product owner watches each generated video before anyone shares it, and the guide's own Synthesia to YouTube idea stays switched off, so nothing publishes without that look.
When the author moves on
TechSmith marks its individual plans as non-transferable, while its Business licence, $198 a user a year, can be handed from one person to the next (store, teams store). An individual subscription bought on a company card leaves with the person who made the tutorials, and the company buys again. Buy Business if more than one person will ever own the library.
Free first
Camtasia's full editor downloads for free, and only the exports carry a watermark until you buy a plan (Camtasia). Synthesia's Basic plan costs nothing, with a watermark and 10 minutes of video a month (Synthesia pricing). Record one 3-minute tutorial in Camtasia, and make the same explanation with a stock presenter in Synthesia. Give each to a new colleague and see which one they follow to the end without asking for help.
The fit, plainly
Choose Camtasia if your job is software tutorials, onboarding walkthroughs and product demos built from real screens, with SCORM into an LMS on a modest budget.
Choose Synthesia if your job is scripted explanations in many languages, kept current on share pages and embeds, without anyone recording a screen or facing a camera.
Synthesia's entry is here; Camtasia has no entry, so its own site, techsmith.com/camtasia, is the reference.
FAQ
Can Camtasia put an AI presenter on screen?
Yes, on the Pro plan or a standalone Audiate subscription, with 49 avatars (avatar page).
Does Camtasia work without an internet connection?
Yes. It is a desktop application, though some cloud sharing and AI features need to be online (Camtasia FAQ).
Can Synthesia record my screen?
Its feature table lists an AI Screen Recorder beside PowerPoint import (Synthesia pricing). For a long software walkthrough with cursor effects, Camtasia's recorder is the more complete tool.
