Pictory vs Synthesia: Stock Footage and a Voice, or a Presenter

The short answer: if you suspect your viewers need a person on screen to trust a product update, a policy change or an enablement module, Synthesia gives you an AI presenter in 140+ languages from $19 a month on monthly billing (Synthesia pricing, checked on 26 October 2026). If the message rides better on footage, captions and a voice, a blog post, a webinar highlight, a customer story, Pictory builds it from Getty Images and Storyblocks stock and ElevenLabs voices on Starter, $29 a month for 2,000 credits (Pictory pricing). Both now offer the other's trick: Pictory has stock avatars, Synthesia has stock footage. The centre of each is still where it was.

Before you choose:
- Put your month in minutes. For example, three 2-minute explainers a week come to 3 x 2 x 4 = 24 minutes a month. On Pictory that is 24 of the 30 minutes Starter is sized for (pricing). On Synthesia, 10 of those minutes are included on every plan and the other 14 cost about 1,400 credits, inside Starter's 1,750 a month (credits article).
- Look at what you already hold. Recordings of real speakers and published articles feed Pictory, which cuts video from a transcript and turns a URL into scenes (homepage). Decks and documents that someone signs off feed Synthesia, which imports speaker notes as the script (PowerPoint article).
- Choose the reading you will take. The share of viewers who reach the call to action at the end, per video, on the page where it runs.
A face, or footage
Synthesia's homepage calls it an AI video and avatar platform for business, with presenters in 140+ languages (Synthesia). The avatar is the message's carrier, which suits material where someone would normally stand and explain. Pictory's agent plans a script and scenes from a brief, a link or a file, then fills the scenes with licensed stock, narration and captions (Pictory 3). That suits material a viewer takes in while scrolling, where a talking head slows things down.

Two smaller differences that add up
Where unused credits go
Pictory's credits article says unused credits roll over to the next cycle and do not expire while you keep an active subscription (AI credits article). Synthesia resets the monthly allowance and the plan's credits each period, and only separately bought credits last 12 months (Synthesia pricing). A team that publishes in bursts, a launch month then a quiet one, loses less on Pictory.
What an avatar costs on Pictory
Pictory charges avatars by the length of the whole video: 15 credits per 30 seconds for a stock avatar, 35 for a custom one (AI credits article). For example, a 2-minute stock-avatar video is 4 x 15 = 60 credits. Pictory can do a presenter; it is simply not built around one.

| Team | Teams, 3+ users, $199 / $119 | Enterprise, quoted |
In US dollars, from the Pictory and Synthesia pricing pages on 26 October 2026. Pictory's annual plans hand over the year's credits on day one; Synthesia's yearly plans do the same with the year's credits.
A draft from a Notion page, by agent
Synthesia's MCP server, in public beta, lets Claude or ChatGPT create a video draft from a script or a prompt and chain it with other connectors in the same chat, for instance a Notion page summarised and turned into a video (MCP docs). It works from Starter upwards; drafts take 30 to 90 seconds, and a setup widget picks the workspace, template and avatar, with brand kit selection reserved for Enterprise. Ask for a draft from the release note page, then stop. The human check: the product owner opens the draft in the Synthesia editor, reads every scene against the release note and fixes names, and only then tells the assistant to generate the final video, which spends the credits. Pictory's own agent follows the same rhythm inside its app, brief, plan, preview, refine, then generate (Pictory 3).
When the month runs dry
Synthesia does not bill overage. When the plan's allowance is spent, video creation pauses until renewal, and the two ways to continue, extra credits or a larger plan, are both purchases (pricing FAQ). That pause lands in whichever week you needed most, so count a launch month's minutes before it starts.
The free round
Pictory's trial needs no card and gives 300 credits (homepage); Synthesia's Basic plan costs nothing and carries a watermark (pricing). Write one 60-second script. Build it in Pictory as stock footage with an AI voice, and in Synthesia with a stock presenter. Put both in front of the three people who would share it with customers, and ask which one they would send.
Who should pick which
Choose Pictory if your job is turning articles, webinars and recordings into short social videos with licensed footage and captions, published in bursts.
Choose Synthesia if your job is explaining something to camera without a camera, in many languages, at a steady pace through the year.

FAQ
Can both start from a web page?
Yes. Pictory converts URLs and blog links into video (homepage), and Synthesia's Assistant turns a dropped-in file or a pasted URL into a draft (Synthesia).
Does Synthesia charge while I edit?
No. Credits are used when something is generated, never while you edit or preview (pricing FAQ).
Do Pictory's annual credits arrive at once?
Yes. Annual plans grant the whole year's credits up front, 24,000 on Starter (Pictory pricing).
