The short answer: for a 10-person marketing team that wants docs and chat inside its project tool, ClickUp's Core plan costs 10 x $9 = $90 a month billed yearly, with 1,000 automations a month and AI credits included (ClickUp pricing). For a team that already keeps docs and chat elsewhere and needs unlimited rules and free access for agencies, Asana Starter costs 10 x $10.99 = $109.90 a month billed annually (Asana pricing). Both read on 26 October 2026. ClickUp sells the bundle. Asana sells the project plan, kept tidy.

On paper, before the trial:
- The bill for the whole team. ClickUp bills every member of an upgraded workspace, per the FAQ on its pricing page; Asana adds seats one at a time up to 5 users, then in fives up to 30 (Asana pricing FAQ). For example, 13 people cost 13 x $9 = $117 on ClickUp Core and 15 x $10.99 = $164.85 on Asana Starter, both billed yearly.
- The docs and chat tools you pay for now. ClickUp's plan includes collaborative docs and ClickUp Chat; Asana connects to Slack, Google Drive, Zoom and 100+ other apps for free. If those subscriptions stay either way, ClickUp's bundle is worth less to you.
- The rules your process needs. Count the automated steps a month: assignments, status changes, reminders. Core allows 1,000 actions a month; Asana Starter lists unlimited automations.
- One number for the end of month one. Requests or tasks past their due date, against the month before.

What separates them
A bundle, or a project tool that connects
ClickUp's homepage counts more than 100 products in one workspace: tasks, docs, chat, whiteboards, an AI notetaker, dashboards and goals. Asana's pricing page builds upwards from projects: timeline and Gantt views, dashboards, forms and custom fields on Starter, then portfolios, goals, resource management, approvals and proofing on Advanced. A team that wants one login for everything leans to ClickUp; a team that runs many launches as a portfolio leans to Asana.
How much automation the plan carries
ClickUp counts every dispatched action against the month's allowance, and when the allowance runs out the workspace's automations pause until the next monthly reset (Intro to Automations). Asana Starter lists unlimited automations. For example, five rules firing on 300 requests a month dispatch 1,500 actions, past Core's 1,000, which means Business on ClickUp and nothing to count on Asana.
How AI is paid for
ClickUp includes a pooled allowance of AI credits per user, with 10,000 more for $10 (pricing). Asana counts AI requests, each one successful unit of work by an AI Teammate or Asana Dash, and charges $0.50 per request prepaid or $0.60 on demand past the allowance (pricing FAQ).
Prices, and which ClickUp list you get
ClickUp, per user a month, checked on 26 October 2026: Core $9 billed yearly or $12 monthly, Business $17 or $25, Enterprise on quote. Its pricing page also shows an older list on some visits, Unlimited at $7 and Business at $12 with AI as an add-on; the pricing article says new workspaces start on the newer plans, and a first paid subscription carries a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Asana, per user a month: Starter $10.99 billed annually or $13.49 monthly, Advanced $24.99 or $30.49, Enterprise on request (pricing).
ClickUp's free plan invites unlimited members, and its FAQ says an upgrade applies to the entire workspace, so every colleague invited while it was free becomes a paid seat on the day the team needs one Core feature (pricing). For example, a team of 10 that also invited 6 occasional reviewers pays 16 x $9 = $144 a month on Core, not $90. The same FAQ counts anyone invited from inside your organisation as a paid user, whatever their role, so remove members who no longer need access before you upgrade.
One agent step: meeting notes to tasks
Asana's MCP server, at https://mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp, lets Claude or ChatGPT create and manage tasks and projects in natural language after you authorise it with your Asana account; one of its example requests is creating a task in the Marketing project (Asana MCP docs). The job: paste the notes from a campaign kick-off and ask Claude to list the tasks it would create, with owner and due date, before creating any. The human check: the campaign lead strikes or edits the list, then approves; Claude creates only what is left. ClickUp runs the same kind of server at https://mcp.clickup.com/mcp, with setup steps for Claude on its developer site.
Choose ClickUp if your job is
- Replacing a separate docs tool and team chat with one workspace the whole team already uses.
- Starting free with everyone invited, then moving to Core at $9 a seat billed yearly (pricing).
- Building AI agents and automations on a pooled credit allowance inside the same app.
Choose Asana if your job is
- Running launches as projects and portfolios, with timelines, approvals and goals.
- Automating intake and handovers without counting actions, at $10.99 a seat billed annually on Starter (pricing).
- Working with agencies and freelancers as unlimited free guests.
Background on ClickUp, including its two price lists, is in the ClickUp entry, and how to use ClickUp builds a request form on it.
Try one live project in each, free
ClickUp's free plan takes the whole team with no card, and Asana's Personal plan covers two people with unlimited tasks and projects (ClickUp, Asana). Move one live campaign into each for two weeks. Count the rules you had to write and the docs you opened elsewhere; those two counts usually point at the plan before anyone pays for it.
FAQ
Does ClickUp still sell AI as an add-on?
Not on the new plans: AI credits are included per user and pooled, and the Brain AI and Everything AI add-ons are not sold there; more credits can still be bought (pricing article).
What does Asana charge once the AI requests run out?
$0.50 per request on prepaid packs, or $0.60 per request on demand billed monthly; failed, timed-out or cancelled tasks are not counted (pricing FAQ).
Can I cancel either mid-term?
ClickUp's plan runs to the end of the billing cycle unless you downgrade at once, and its satisfaction guarantee refunds a purchase in full if you ask within 30 days (pricing FAQ). Asana keeps paid features until the end of the current period when you cancel (pricing).
